Tasveer exhibits of Bollywood

Guest article by DP Rangan

(A lesser mortal, when asked to write on songs on ‘tasveer’, would have made some general observations about pictures, and mentioned some songs which contained the word ‘tasveer’. Not DP Rangan, as we know well by now. Mr Rangan takes us to pre-historic days when mankind would have started making some pictorial representations by sketching on rocks and caves. Thank you Mr Rangan for another article, in a long series of guest articles, loaded with information . – AK)

Tasveer banata hunLiving beings emerged from the primordial chemical bath some three billion years ago on Earth and human beings seem to be the latest in the ladder of life. Unlike other living entities who were solely concerned with their day to day survival and perpetuation of their species, humans, because of their extra sensory perception and intellect, sought to understand the surroundings in which they evolved. They are the only species not to live in harmony with nature, but try to twist it to suit their living conditions with disastrous consequences for all. They seem to have developed a sense of ego and creativity all along and exhibit it in some form or another. They developed the art of drawing on rocks leaving behind memories of the environment in which they evolved. Thus was born the art of sketches and drawing and tasveer was a by-product of this trait.

San or Bushmen were the original native inhabitants of South Africa with a history of more than 30000 years of continuous existence. Migration of tribes from north as Hottentot, Masai, Zulus pushed them down. After 16th century, Dutch settlers arrived in huge numbers in the southern tip (Cape of Good Hope) and started spreading into the interior of South Africa. Hemmed in from all sides, today they live in the remote Kalahari desert and Botswana and their numbers are quite low and their ancient way of life is under threat. They were a perfect species of humans who lived in complete harmony in the deserts, where civilized human beings would perish. They were one of the greatest rock artists who left behind a plethora of pictures in rock shelters and caves. In Drakensberg mountain (Natal), Namibia and Lesotho a lot of San cave art can be found. They used to record their surroundings and paint the animals they used to hunt as eland, antelope, giraffe etc. Using brushes made from animal hair their paintings were very realistic and could easily hold their own against current paintings. They used powdered rock with fat as painting material and these have withstood the ravages of time and weather and are well preserved. A few of the San paintings are shown below.

Europe also abounds in rock art. They are Altamira cave paintings of Spain, Lascaux and Chauvet Cave in France to name a few. Similar cave paintings have also been discovered in American Southwest, Patagonia and Australia.

(Lions portrait from Chauvet)

Coming over to recent times, there is no dearth of paintings, be it scenery, biblical theme or portraits. The most famous painting of all is ‘Mona Lisa’ by Leonardo da Vinci, a multi-faceted gem from Italy. The portrait done between 1504 and 1519 was that of a woman named Lisa Gherardini, wife of a noted silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo. This was the most studied work of art since its discovery and is now lodged in Louvre, Paris.

clip_image014

There were other painters of note, such as Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Goya, Paul Gaugin, Constable, George Turner to name a few in Europe. Their works were praised and many of them adorn the private galleries of billionaires bitten by the art bug. In the 20th century, a notable artist was Pablo Picasso. A Picasso painting would be worth its weight in gold.

Asia also did not lag behind. China and India had a long history of paintings. Many cave rock art were discovered in Sulawesi island of Indonesia dating back to more than 35000 years.

I will now say a few words on Indian paintings.

clip_image016

The earliest were prehistoric rock paintings like the petroglyphs from ‘Bhimbetka’ rock shelters of Madhya Pradesh which are more than 30000 years old.

Ajanta caves are well known for their cave paintings by Buddhist monks. These are classified as murals. There are 28 caves spread over the area and many of them are full of paintings representing Buddhist philosophy. Mural paintings were also executed on other places like Chittannavasal (Tamil Nadu) during the reign of Pallavas and Kailasanath temple of Ellora caves.

Miniature paintings were another branch and they reached a zenith during the Moghul period. Several schools of painting carried forward this tradition in Rajasthan. Other schools of painting were Madhubani, Kangra, Mysore, and Tanjore.

Literature on the subject is very vast. This is a musical blog and hence I will now start describing a few songs on the theme of tasveer. Some of the songs will actually depict the hero engaged in painting while crooning.

1. Dil ko haye dil ko teri tasveer from Dastan (1950) by Rafi & Suraiya, lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Naushad

Raj Kapoor and Suraiya are the main starrers. A well-known film with many songs of repute. This is sweet but slow tempered, typical of its days. Naushad has composed some of his best tunes for this film.

2. Apni tasveer se kah do from Sabzbag (1951) by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle, lyrics Aziz Kashmiri, music Ghulshan Soofi

No information is available about the film and there is no live video. The duet sounds sweet.

3. Aa teri tasveer bana lun from Nadaan (1951) by Talat Mahmood, lyrics PL Santoshi, music Chic Chocolate

A Dev Anand and Madhubala starrer, the picture is a copy of the Hollywood movie It Happened One Night”which I have seen in USA a few years back. There are two versions and both are available in this video. Music direction is by Chic Chocolate, assistant to C. Ramchandra and the style is distinctly that of the master. One of the best crooners from Talat Mahmood that has not lost its appeal even after such a long time.

4. Tasveer banata hun teri from Deewana (1952) by Rafi, lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Naushad

Some of the major actors are Suraiya, Sumitra Devi, Suresh, Madan Puri. An evergreen tune by Naushad. Habib Wali Mohammad has sung a version song which is equally good to hear.  The link below gives both the versions.

5. Duniya tasveer hai from Aulad (1954) by Talat Mahmood, lyrics Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, music Sardar Mullick

Balraj Sahni, Usha Kiran and Nirupa Roy are the leading actors. A delectable tune composed by Sardar Mullick and Talat Mahmood has rendered full justice.

6. Tasveer banata hun tasveer nahi banti from Baradari (1955) by Talat Mahmood, lyrics Khumar Barabanqvi, music Shaukat Dehlvi Nashad

Ajit, Pran and Geeta Bali are the main actors. This is a story of Rajasthan chivalry. A prince tries to come between two lovers and ultimately realizes his folly and allows them to reunite. Nashad has given a nice tune and Talat Mahmood as usual shines with his crooner voice. Bhula nahin dena is a sweet duet by Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar from this film.

7. Tasveer nayan mein from Raaj Kanya (1955) by Rafi and Asha Bhosle, lyrics GS Nepali, music Chitragupt

Manohar Desai and Nalini Jaywant are the main actors. The duet is presented as it is for listeners’ pleasure.

8. Aanewale kal ki tum tasveer ho from Chhote Babu (1957), by Lata Mangeshkar, lyrics Indeevar, music Madan Mohan

A B-grade film with actors like Shekhar, Nimmi, Agha, Kanhaiya Lal, Helen, uplifted to some extent by the excellent music by Madan Mohan. This is a typical tune from him and looks like an adaptation from the earlier song from the film Railway PlatformBasti basti parbat by Rafi. I can also see resemblance to another song – Is Duniyan me sub chor chor by Lata Mangeshkar from the film Bhai Bhai.

9. Tasveer teri dil mein from Maya (1961) by Lata Mangeshkar & Rafi, lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music Salil Chowdhury

Dev Anand, Mala Sinha, Lalitaa Pawar and Amjad Khan are some of actors. Salilda has given a moving duet.

10. Meri tasveer lekar from Kala Samundar (1962) by Rafi & Asha Bhonsle, lyrics Anand Bakshi, music N Datta

A B grade film with cast as Jairaj, Chitra, Maruti, Hira Lal and Tun Tun. A qawwali style song nicely rendered by Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhosle.

11. Teri tasveer bhi tujhse from Kinare Kinare (1963) by Rafi, lyrics Nyay Sharma, music Jaidev

Dev Anand and Meena Kumari play lead roles. The song based on classical raga has been rendered very well by Rafi. Chale ja rahein hai kinare kinare by Manna Dey is also worth listening to.

12. Jo baat tujh me hai teri tasveer mein nahi from Taj Mahal (1963) by Rafi, lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music Roshan

A great movie released in 1963, the main actors are Pradeep Kumar and Bina Roy. Roshan had given great and enduring songs for this film embellishing the lyrics of Shakeel Badayuni. Each and every song is a hit and will be heard in posterity. This one by Rafi is exquisite to say the least.

13. Dil ke aaine mein tasveer teri rahti hai from Aao Pyar Karen (1964) by Rafi, lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Usha Khanna

Saira Banu, Joy Mukherjee, Rajendra are the main actors. An average tune by the M.D., and Rafi has gone through the motions.

14. Humne jag ki ajab tasveer dekhi from Shankar Seeta Anasuya (1965) by Pradeep, lyrics Kavi Pradeep, music Shivram

A classic film based on Sati Anasuya and the song is very poignant and full of philosophical value about life. Mahipal, Nirupa Roy, Anita Guha, Madhumitha, Sulochana are some of the stars. Pradeep has the right intonation to convey deep feelings by his rendering.

15. Jidhar dekhun teri tasveer from Mahaan (1983) by Kishore Kumar, lyrics Anjaan , music R.D. Burman

I now transgress the laid down tradition of confining to the classic period and post one nice song sung by Kishore Kumar. Amitabh Bachan, Waheeda Rehman, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babhi are some of the major actors. The hilly terrain in the background is quite enchanting. Amitabh Bachan is singing his heart out to touch the inner chord of Waheeda Rehman. It is a typical tune from R D Burman.

16. Tasveer teri dil mera behla na sakegi (non-film 1944) by Talat Mahmood, lyrics Faiyyaz Hashmi, music Kamal Dasgupta

An iconic song set to a delectable tune by the great music director Kamal Dasgupta, Talat Mahmood rose to great heights in rendering this. It was a radio era song under HMV release and was responsible for his rapid ascent in his singing career thereafter. For sheer sweetness and timelessness, I include this as the last piece.

I now leave it to the experts of the blog to dissect my post and offer their opinion about it and also bring out more gems which I had missed.

Many a heroes and heroines are seen with a brush, usually giving the finishing touches to a beautiful landscape or a portrait. They do break into a song, almost always.
TAQDEER,1967,Anand Bakshi,LP,Rafi.
Jab jab bahaar aayere, aur phool muskuraye,
Mujhe tum yaad aaye…..

Ek pyar aur wafa ki tasveer maanta hoon,
Tasveer kya tumhe main taqdeer maanta hoon.

The 1979 SAAWAN KO AANE DO has a pleasant Yesudas (Jesudas) number…Pothi padhey padhey jag muaa,
Pandit baney na koy,
Dhaai akshar prem ka,
Padhey so pandit hoy…..
Teri tasveer ko seeney se lagaa rakha hai.
Fauq Jaqmi, Rajkamal.
BEMISAAL,1982, Kishore Kumar,Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar; Anand Bakshi,RDB.
Kitni khoobsurat ye tasveer hai,
Mausam bemisaal,benazir hai,
Ye Kashmir hai,ye Kashmir hai.
PARDES,1997, Kumar Sanu,Alka Yagnik; Anand Bakshi: Nadeem Shravan.
Kisi roz tumse mulakat hogi,
Meri jaan us din mere saath hogi….
…..
Zara tasveer se tu nikalke saamne aa,
Meri Mehbooba……
SRK’s performance had made this number a huge hit.

I scrolled up twice before adding Jeevan se bhari teri aankhen
Majboor kare jeene ke liye.
The SAFAR(1970) beauty, for me,is the quintessential Tasveer song. Indeewar’s lyrics for this song,as also for the other lovely songs from the movie, are brought alive by Kishore Da and Kalyanji Anandji.
In his heydays,Kaka, the eternal romantic, shone on the screen.
I have quite a few other tasveer songs knocking at the mind, but, would wait for some others to come in before posting them!

Dr. Pradeep thanks for adding such sweet songs in a jiffy while I had to toil hard to collect these few songs. Add more and enrich this blog please.

Teri Surat Se Nahi Milati, Mohd Rafi, Ziddi
The same mistake has occurred second time on this blog ( if AK remembers) Lyric writer of Taj Mahal is Sahir Ludhianvi and not Sahkeel Badayuni.

Tasveer kahan ley jayagei maloom nahi from the filk Saanj aur Aavera is a fine number composed by SJ sung by Rafi Sahib. The flow of voilins, the accordian bit, the fast rhythm all chactersitic of shankar jaikishan score make this a fine melody. This song is not too often played in the media.

A nice post AKji and ranganji,
What a coincidence that I had a post planned on tasveer songs.
As you have mentioned in your opening remarks, I wasn’t be going into the history of paintings. That part of the post was very interesting to read.
I had ten songs on my list, eight of which feature here.
The remaining songs from my post are…
1. Mujhe dekho hasrat ki tasveer hoon from baaz by Talat
https://youtu.be/QKB65Utnz0E

2. Kya Kehte Masha Allah from jee chahta hai. By Rafi-Suman
https://youtu.be/mOR77IoEdLQ

Of course your post is far more superior than the one I had planned.
🙂

Rangan ji:

Comprehensive write-up and selection of songs. Mumbaikar8 ji has beaten me to the songs that I had in mind! Here is ‘Tujhe dekha tujhe chaha’ (Rafi and Suman in Chhoti si mulaqat; MD: SJ; lyrics: Hasrat) containing ‘jab jara gardan jhukai, dekh li tasveer-e-yaar’ in the second stanza.

One more song I had thought of for my post, from Samay Bada balwan
https://youtu.be/soNOiIuEgRY
Teri tasveer se aankhen Meri by Asha-Rafi.
A soft romantic song.

Also I want to suggest a correction, the lyricist for deewana is Shakil badayuni and not sahir.

11 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 22, 2018 at 7:24 pm

D P Rangan ji,
Thank you for the appreciation. As I said,I remember scores of beautiful tasveer songs. Will post in instalments allowing others to take part. Three songs I had in mind… Main tasveer uthartha hoon( HEERA PANNA), Mehbooba teri tasveer kis tarah (ISHQ PAR ZOR NAHIN) and Tasveer kahan le Jaayegi…are added now. I feel good.
Now, let me talk about two title songs.
TASWEER,1966.Wadia. The Firoz Khan, Kalpana starrer has the popular song Tasveer bhi dekhi thi,
Aur inko bhi dekha hai,
Tasveer ajab shai thi,
Aur ye bhi cheez kya hai.
Mahendra Kapoor sounds almost like Rafi saab. D N Madhok,C Ramchandra.
I recall hearing it frequently on radio in my childhood. I have seen parts of the movie. I think a Chitrakar paints a Tasveer of Kalpana chupke chupke. Feroz Khan gets both the Tasveer and the Muse. There is a song going on the heart broken, disillusioned Chitrakar!
8×10…. TASVEER,2009. The Akshay Kumar starrer by Jagadish Kukkanoor had a fantasy plot where the hero can enter any Tasveer and witness the events prior to the taking of the picture. The title song here is curious in the sense it is written, composed and sung by the American rap singer Bohemia.
I got the picture….go the lines.( Mere paas tasveer hai? Or, Dekha hai maine tasveer ko? …. the choice is yours!)
JOHAR IN KASHMIR,1966 ,Rafi,Indeewar, Kalyanji Anandji.
Jannat ki tasveer na denge,
Haathon mein kisi gair ke na denge,
Kashmir hai Bhaarath ka,
Kashmir hum na denge.

The blog indeed covers all the good songs under the TASVEER and really heartening to see in one place!

13 N Venkataraman March 22, 2018 at 8:02 pm

Ranganji,
Glad to see your post after a long time. I could not find you after I came out of my hibernation.
As usual another interesting topic from your fertile brain. Thanks for the interesting and informative introduction.
That reminds me of the the Edakkal caves in Wayanad district in North Kerala, where you can find drawings that range over periods from the Neolithic.

Coming to Paintings / Painters in films, from the 1930s up to the emergence of Computer Generated Imagery and higher quality photography, painted back-drops were an essential part of the cinema industry. However, the artists were barely credited. The painted backdrop was crucial to the audience’s immersion in the cinematic world. And it was no different in the Indian context too.

Professional painters also played an important role in making of the promotional / publicity hoarding till the advent of digital printing, flex/vinyl boards and CGI.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEE9oIhzHhs

Coming to films on Painters / artists, right from the1930s, there several Hollywood films made on painters like Piccasso, Cellini, Maupassant, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and others.
I can recollect only two contemporary Indian movies, Nainsukh (2010) based on the life and works of Nainsukh (1710–1778), an 18th-century Indian miniature (Pahari) painter of Jasrota( Himachal) and Guler (Jammu) and Rang Rasiya (2014) film based on the life of the 19th-century Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma.
Moving on to the central theme of your post, let me thank you for posting a bouquet of songs with the word Tasveer (and its synonymous words). I have made quick browsing. I will listen to the songs again.
Here is a beautiful vintage song
Tasveer Banane wale by Rafiq Ghaznavi, Khursheed and chorus, film Sitara (1939), lyrics Munshi Dil Lucknawi, music Rafiq Ghaznavi

Surprised you did not have the songs I posted in your ten tasveer songs!
Mehbooba teri tasveer in particular!

Mumbaikar 8,
Thanks a lot for those SD songs.
The one from ziddi s known to me. But somehow I forgot about it completely while I was preparing my list.
I was actually searching for a female solo for my list.
But I couldn’t find one.
All the songs are either male solos or a Rafi duet.
But the song from Ishq par Zor nahin is a new song for me.
Thanks for introducing it to me.
Visit my blog if u get time!

I was also surprised not to find ‘mujhe dekho hasrat ki tasveer’ in the present list.

ZINDAGI AUR THOOFAN,1975, Mukhesh,Ram Avtar Thyagi,LP.
Ek hasrath thi ke aanchal ka mujhe pyar mile…..
Here tasveer appears in two moods…
The pessimistic/ fatalistic
Jo bhi tasveer banata hoon, bhigad jaati hai,
Dekhte dekhte duniya hi ujad jaati hai.
The optimistic/ inspirational
Aadmi chahe toh taqdeer badal sakta hai,
Poori duniya ki tasveer badal sakta hai.
To our young minds, the lines….
Mujhko paida kiya duniya mein do lashon ne…were very scandalous!
SAMADHI,1972, Manna Dey, Majrooh Sultanpuri,RDB.
Ye khel hai taqdeer ke,
Do chehre,ek tasveer ke,
Bhagwan bhi, Shaitan bhi,
Kya cheez hai Insaan!
BETAAB,1983, Shabbir Kumar, Anand Bakshi,RDB.
Ye meri zindagi bejaan laash thi,
Barson se pyar ko teri thalash thi…..
……….. taqdeer mil gayi,
Teri tasveer mil gayi.
Notice how the most commonly used rhyming word for tasveer is taqdeer?
DAAMAN AUR AAG,1973, Rafi, Asha; Hasrat ,SJ.
Muskurathee huyee ek husn ki tasveer ho tum.
SILSILA,1981.AB, Kishore Kumar,Lata; Javed Akhtar,Shiv Hari.
Dekha ek khwab toh …..
…….
Teri tasveer hai nigahon mein,
Door tak roshni hai rahon mein.
DIL EK MANDIR,1960,Rafi, Shailendra,SJ.
Yaad na jaaye beete dinon ki..
………..
Tasveer unki chupa ke,rakh doon jahan jee chahe,
Man mein basi ye moorat, lekin miti na mitaye,
Kehne ko woh hai paraye!
Another song with tasveer and moorat is coming to my mind. The lyrics go like this…
Ek tasveer,ek moorat hai,
Haaye woh kitne khoobsurat hai.
From the 50s….Lata. I think it is a Rajendra Kumar,Kamini Kadam movie.
Someone please clarify.

Venkatraman ji @13 ;

Thanks for bringing back the old memories of publicity by a number of very talented painters . The link you have pasted says it all. What I used to get thrill was the big cinema hand painted posters were used to be towed by man driven carts or Theelas , by Rikshaws , on Tempus , behind bus or even horse driven carts . This was around till mid 60s or 70s . Thereafter , the big surfaced walls took over the publicity and competition started….bigger the film bigger the posters . This trend got bigger dimensions when huge cut out of film stars attained greater heights than the building , specially in south indian movies .

As rightly said , the computer and internet took over the publicity and those great painters and artists just left behind only for those who valued such art.

A sample of such art in title music of Bombay talkies…..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wMuYl_-ig8

It was a fun to watch cinema publicity in newspapers of those times . Besides the regular ones , there were weekly news papers like Screen , Star and Style etc. which were completely devoted to cinemas . I remember in July / August there was a full page advt. of Mughal E Azam in regular Daily newspapers like The Hindustan Times , and that was first time in publicity campaign when full page was used for a single movie.

Rangan, N.Venkatraman@13 and ksbhatia@21

First discovering an interesting subject and letting all “Tasveer” songs here is extremely good idea and I praise Mr Rangan for this good step.

I praise N.Venkatraman for presenting information about artists and films on them.

However I am not happy about the beginning of the article of Mr Rangan. I put my thoughts as following but Mr Rangan should take them as coming from a good reader of his posts:

The connection between the Tasveer songs and early cave paintings and European art and as well as the ancient Indian art and modern art is not very clearly connected. Enumerations of Art illustrations do not make sense with the Tasveer songs. But subject is worth thinking of and more maturity in thinking is needed.

As ancient Indian connection like Shankuntalam is not mentioned. King Dushyant towards the end of the play was working on a painting of Shakuntala. This is exactly a similar situation in many films and Talta’s iconic song as well.

There in ancient India paintings were sent of would be marriageable persons to give idea about how they look like. I believe there is film which uses this idea.

The Tasveer and love are connected to each other. There is also a superstition that if a wicked person holds a Tasveer of a person and uses “Jaadutona” the person in the Tasveer becomes a slave to the wicked person.

The modern thinking of painting came with the need of the East India company for survey and ordinance maps for the governance of India.

British employed trained artist to do the job and they also did sketching of people and places and landscapes. The India Library in London has a wealth of paintings of by gone people and countryside.

The JJ School of Arts is a pioneering and prestigious institute in India. Rudyard Kipling’s father was principal of this college and Rudyard was born in the precinct of the College. Rudyard who wrote many stories based on the Indian themes including Jungle Book and they were well illustrated by his own father.

Art in India is now well flourished and many artists have western status. In the early sixties the Indian artists who either came here in England for higher education or exhibiting their work created a group called “Group 64” that struggled to give honour and respect to the Indian artists. Among them Souza, Ibrahim Wagh, Mali etc became very well known. Mali still is alive and exhibits regularly.

Recently the London’s famous Science Museum had an exhibition about India’s contribution to Science which exhibited items of number system, invention of zero etc. and India’s space adventures. Among them there was an art section as well. Both ancient paintings and modern paintings were exhibited. Among them one artist Chilla Kumari presented her artworks on gods goddesses.

There was also a book of photographs called Studio Posed photographs that was the precursor of the Indian films.

These were the photographs of people who visited Bombay at the turn of the 19th century and went to take their own photographs of themselves and allowed the photographers to give them poses.

Veknkatramn’s comment mentions Raja Raviverma. Our papers have published an account of an Auction in New York in which Raja Rviverma’s painting “Tillotama” was sold for five and quarter million dollars. The Most of the original paintings of Raja Raviverma are in possession of the Principality of Baroda. Some criticised that the painting “Tillotamma” was gone to New York for the auction and Indian government did not do anything about it..

Indian films are a link up of posed photographs (Tasveers).
Here is song from the famous film “Sargam 1950”

“Tasveer-e-Yaar Dil Se ……” in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar, Music by C.Ramchandra.

Ms. Mumbaikar 8 , Mehfil mein Meri ;

Ashkon se teri humne tasveer banayi hai….is a lovely song by asha ji . The Movie Dekh Kabira Roya had a trio of song , two of which were sung by Lata ji . ….Tu pyar kare ya thukraye….and….Meri beena tujh bin rooye. Madan Mohan masterly composed these songs and are on the lips of the plus 60 s agers .

One more female oriented tasveer song is here….

D P Rangan ji,
Specially for your kind attention….
BAAZ,1953, Talat Mahmood, Majrooh Sultanpuri,OP Nayyar.
Mujhe dekho hasrath ki tasveer hoon main…..
A young, handsome Guru Dutt being taken to the gallows atop a horse, with his hands cuffed and sporting a large headgear,a mix between cowboy hat and a Balinese one, sings pleasantly. A OPN song unlike OPN!
Now, for the kind attention of all the other readers….
DPR ji is entitled to the famous Hindi dialogues… Hamari billi hamee se meaoon? / Tum jis college mein padthe the wahan ke Principal hum hain….
Because, I first became aware of this song from DPR ji’s post on Bollywood’s Romance with the horses!

29 Mehfil Mein Meri March 24, 2018 at 12:20 pm

@ksbhatia ji,
Thanks for the song ‘aankhon se jo utari hai’
I had forgotten about it too.
My God,
It seems my memory is not working properly.

Ab ke hum bichde toh shayad kabhi khwabon mein mile,
Jis tarah sookhe huye phool kitabon mein mile….
Nice lines, right? One would normally assosiate Gulzar with such shayri.
These lines by Bhupinder open the song
Mere dil mein teri tasveer sada rehthi hai,
Mere taqdeer tu hai ya nahin ,kya janoon.
It is almost a Asha Bhonsle solo because Bhupinder sings only the first two lines.
EK HANS KA JODA,1975, Indeewar, Jaidev.

31 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 24, 2018 at 5:43 pm

CHIRAG,1969,Rafi, Majrooh Sultanpuri,Madan Mohan.
Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakhha kya hai….
……………….
In mein mere aanewale zamane ki tasveer hai…….
Few among us may not be knowing the fact that the first lines of this song were borrowed from the famous Faiz Ahmed Faiz najm Mujh se pehli si muhabbat mere mehboob na maang.
The najm, written in the 50s, was tuned and sung by Noor Jehan spontaneously at a gathering to celebrate the release of Faiz from the prison.(Was jailed for his communist views in Pakistan.) The tune was immensely liked by all, and it is even said, from then on,Faiz credited Noor Jehan as a co writer for the same.
In 1962, the Pakistani movie Qaid used the song. It was a huge hit.

Main Vidhata ke haathon ki tasveer hoon,
Ek tasveer hoon….

SAMRAT CHANDRAGUPTA,1958,Lata,Rafi,Indeevar, Kalyanji Veerji Shah.
Chahe paas ho ,chahe door ho,
Mere sapno ke tum tasveer ho…
( I remember a parody of this song my seniors used to sing…
Chahe pass ho,chahe fail ho,
Mere college ke tum avval ho!)

Good songs of course.
But as far as my post was concerned, I was only looking for songs with the word in Mukhada.
Ranganji haven’t replied so far to most of the comments.
Let’s see what he says!

36 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 25, 2018 at 12:14 pm

Item 15….jidhar dekhoon teri tasveer… has a sad version by Amitabh Bachchan.
He sings it over the phone for Waheeda Rehman decades after the Kishore Kumar song. The concept was used again in BAAGHBAAN…Main yahan tum wahan.
The movie MAHAAN was a remake of a super hit Kannada movie SHANKAR GURU,1978, starting Rajkumar in triple roles,of a father and his twin sons. Kanchana, Jayamala and Padmapriya were the heroines. It was remade in Tamil(with Sivaji Ganesan) and Telugu (Krishna),too.

MAMTA-1952-Sheeshe Mein Do Tasveerein Ik Teri Ik Meri

39 Mehfil Mein Meri March 25, 2018 at 2:00 pm

@mumbaikar8,
Thanks for the song.
Heard for the first time, but a good song. A cheerful tune.
The M D mentioned is sonik. Is he from the duo sonik omi? Have you any idea?

Sulochana kadam didn’t get much opportunity in Hindi films after death of Shyamsunder.
Or if she got, was for an obscure film, that didn’t get acclaim.

40 D P Rangan March 25, 2018 at 7:25 pm

At the outset let me apologise for my laggardness in not responding earlier. I was laid low with a minor ailment, a niggle in left part of neck due to the bad habit of cell phone addiction and wrong pose. I just could not concentrate. I am overwhelmed at the scale of responses and the plethora of songs on the subject when I was struggling to build up my list. I would have loved to present only such songs where the hero or heroine is painting. That would mean delving deep into the ocean of internet and might still be struggling. I should thank you all for your generous contribution. I will come to details now.

41 D P Rangan March 25, 2018 at 7:42 pm

Mumbaikarji Very much appreciate for your kind words on this post. I should try to do better in future if AK will give me a chance.

Mehfilji – I know this is a pesudo name. You are over generous in stating that my post is better than what you would have written on the subject. You can still write on other aspects of tasveer with songs. I am eagerly looking forward to it. I always try to write something basic about the theme as introduction for enlightenment of blog followers. I could write much more but realising this is a music blog have to restrain myself.

Canasya – Thanks for the appreciation

KB – Your one line conveys a world of meaning and I thank you for it.
Venkataramanji – You are such a treasure house of information and have shown it in your write up. Getting a pat from you is a great thing for me. You have a genius for coming up with vintage songs and I even dare to assume it may be the first song in Bollywood on this theme.

Bhatiaji – Thanks for the words. Of late you seem to have slowed down in your song shower. Slow and steady wins the race and I expect you to contribute more on the subject.

Dr. Pradeep @ 28 – Happy I introduced that song in my post on horses. I think it fits there better as it is sung while riding a horse. Mere mention of ‘tasveer’ in a song would be a dilution. At the same time understanding lyrics is not my forte.

42 D P Rangan March 25, 2018 at 7:55 pm

@ 24 Shalan Lal

I eagerly wait for your comments and appreciate its frankness. Your comment is itself equal to a post at the wealth of knowledge displayed there. You have more than a casual knowledge of films produced in West and do bring in lot of information.
I just wanted to indicate how human beings were artists even aeons ag0. Film is a recent development whereas paintings go back far into the past. It is not possible to build a perfect corelation between the history of painting as an art and the songs on the subject. Last November I visited Almora and saw rich cave man paintings etched on rocks. I have taken very good photos and I do not know how to upload them here. Enrichment and addition of knowledge is the role of followers of the blog and you have done it very well. I will try to do much better in future to get a nod of appreciation from you though I realise it will be quite tough. I enjoy your writing and expect another great post from you.

Ms. Mumbaikar 8 @38;

The Sulochana Kadam song from Mamta is very good. I heard it for the first time and I liked it pace and rhythm …..sort of a surprise from Sonik . Its a mystery for me wheather he belongs to Sonik Omi duo MDs camp . May be at that time he was assistant to Roshan .

44 ksbhatia March 26, 2018 at 1:09 am

D P Rangan ji ;

An Artist mind is as big as canvas , even if he is engaged in making a miniature painting , sketch or even a small sculpture . Some time a big painting made with random thoughts says everything and so fetches handsome amount . And so also the street painters getting maximum when caught the sharp eyes of the passer by. I remember a scene from ….An American in Paris ….as such as this…..Gene Kelly selling his 2 feet by 2 feet painting to a rich lady and getting more than the selling price .

Hollywood Musical movies of the 50s and 60s had everything ; big sets , big dance numbers , big cinemascope canvas screen with beautiful painted background sceneries …..really a visual treat for the viewer with their ears infused on multi track sound system . One of the Shirley MacLaine hit movie…..What a Way to Go….had two scenes ; one in which the artist is shooting colored balloons hanging on the canvas wall , the resultant painting fetching a very high price making the artist millionaire overnight . …and the second one in which a chimpanzee drawing a painting with random strokes and again getting maximum price . So some time its beholder that becomes culprit of viewing the beauty out of the nothing .

On our side of the globe , I would view V. Shantaram as the main contributer of the various forms of art in his various movies made from time to time . Navrang, Stree, Geet gaya…, Boond jo….,Jal bin …, Pinjra …etc. are a few of his films that were really loaded with art relevant to their themes.

Getting on with songs , here are two of my fav. songs which I reserve for not listening to it quite often ; because once you listen to them it will remain in your mind for a long long time because of its shear lyrics and beautiful renditions .

Kuchh aisi pyaari shakl mere dilruba ki hai……Rafi….Naya Kanoon…MM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8cxdmGvSZY

Kal teri tasveer ko sajde kiye hain raat bhar….HK..Non Filmi…Ravi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDA9bcT0oiw

The Lyrics for both the songs are by Hasrat Jaipuri .

Bhatiaji – Your thought process is very informative. I have seen lot of Hollywood movies and during my stay in USA plenty of old classic films also was available from libraries and my cup was full. I am enjoying all the songs posted so far.

Ashokji thanks for the appreciation. I am happy you also like the introduction to the post, which I usually compile so that those interested can further delve into it. I feel merely presenting songs renders the post incomplete.

47 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 26, 2018 at 6:09 pm

ksbhatia ji,
Sonik of MAMTA (1952)is indeed Master Sonik of Sonik Omi duo.It is the first film of theirs. In 1951,Sonik had given the music for ISHWARA BHAKTI with Giridhar.
It was their first project as composers.
Master( Manohar Lal) Sonik was blind by birth. Had great musical talents. Was a good singer, too! Omprakash ( Omi) was his nephew.
Though they entered the industry in the early 50s , they remained unsung because most of their films failed. Sonik was employed, first by Madan Mohan and later,SDB and Usha Khanna,as a music arranger. ( Sonik, the Blind Musician,is credited for the background music in DIL DEKE DEKHO).Omi was an assistant to Roshan.
Their big break came with DIL NE PHIR YAAD KIYA,1965, with it’s all hit score comprising… Title song,Kaliyon ne ghoonghat khole,Aajaa re pyar pukare,Main Suraj hoon tu meri kiran,Ye dil hai mohabbat ka pyasa,Lo chehra surkh sharab hua…….
They survived with hit songs from time to time.
Raaz ki baat keha doon toh(DHARMA)
Dono ne kiya tha pyar magar (MAHUA)
Jinhe hum bhoolna chahe woh aksar yaad aate hain (AABROO)
Kaan mein jhumka (SAWAN BHADON)
Kanha re Kanha tune lakhon (TRUCK DRIVER)
Sansaar hai ek nadiya (RAFTAAR)
Yaad rahega pyar ka ye rangeen zamana(UMR QAID)……..
Sonik passed away in 1993 and Omi,in 2016.
Hitesh Sonik, Sunidhi Chauhan’s husband is Sonik’s grand nephew.

D P Rangan ji;

Thanks for your kind words . I am happy I have a pal who is passionate about Hollywood movies . Yes those movies of the 40s thru late 60s were really most enjoyable . Bollywood took over comedy remakes where Hollywood left . A series of Shammi Kapoor , Biswajeet and Joy Mukerjee starrer comedies had some shades of Hollywood comedies .

50 ksbhatia March 26, 2018 at 11:29 pm

Dr.Pradeep Kumar Shetty;

Thanks for the very detailed information on the music directors of the gone by eras….Omi and Sonik . Yes , they had a struggling career and came with great relief with Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya and Sawan Bhadoan .

But for me their background score in Dil Deke Dekho is the best . The title track itself speaks for the music in store of this Usha Khanna’s masterly made compositions . A combination of sarangi/ violin and mandolin made a very romantic atmosphere thru out the movie . In Summers whenever I want a feel of Nanital , I play my Dil deke dekho DVD and enjoy the landscapes with beautiful music.

51 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 26, 2018 at 11:32 pm

Oh! How could I omit Puttaraja Gawai of Gadag, Karnataka, the blind musician, teacher, philanthropist!

52 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 27, 2018 at 6:20 pm

ksbhatia ji,
The songs of DIL DEKE DEKHO,by a debutant 17 year old ( young) female composer had given rise to many debates.( Though I wasn’t yet born then,I am writing this from the articles I read over the years.)
Since OPN was the person who introduced Usha Khanna to S Mukherjee,it was assumed that he had ghost composed the music for her! Usha herself,in an interview available on the You tube, mentions this. The title song and Bade hain dil ke kaale…had a very strong OPN flavour.
Being the only female composer who made a mark for herself in a male dominated industry( after Saraswati Devi…. Ishrat Sultan/Bibbo and Jaddan Bai had given music for 2 and 1 movies, respectively) and having worked from 1958 to 2003, doesn’t she deserve a post on songs of yore? She has given us many memorable numbers.
In a coincidence, came across a song for this post from the first directorial venture of Sawan Kumar Tak, GOMTI KE KINARE,1972,Manhar Udas, Majrooh Sultanpuri,RDB.
Khwab si tasveer aankhen,
Lab chalakte jam se,
Aap hi kahiye pukaare aap ko
Kis naam se?
From his second movie HAWAS,1974(Teri galiyon mein na rakhenge kadam) to his last but one,DIL PARDESI HO GAYA,2003,Usha Khanna scored music for most of them. Incidentally, DPHG is her last movie till date. She is 77 now.
Are my responses getting longer than expected?!?

53 ksbhatia March 27, 2018 at 11:50 pm

Dr. Shetty @ 52;

Members of SoY had a long discussions on relevance and role of OPN style of music in Dil Deke Dekho in The OPEN HOUSE with many observations and comments of various experts. What emerged in between was Jaikishan helping Usha Khanna in many tunes and this fact was supported with reference to the live interview of Usha Khanna in one of the radio prog.

Revisting Open House will be worth researching further.

There used to be a studio in the garden behind my house where one bearded Gopal Da used to paint these big hoardings. I and my sister, who were in school at that time, would sneak out of the backdoor of our house and watch in wonder Gopal Da and his team painting these hoardings. As you have said they used transport them by thelas or on the heads of labourers carryin g these banners. We used to collect the used photographs of the film stars from Gopal Da who was always obliging. Much later, in the late nineties, I met an old Gopal Da painting election motifs and campaign materials on walls. I felt sorry for him.

60 N Venkataraman March 29, 2018 at 4:50 pm

Ranganji,
Listening to your last song (#16), reminds me of a light hearted song by Md Rafi. The opening aalap begins with similar line, Tasveer teri dil mera behla na sakegi.

This song was picturised on comedian Radha Kishan. When this song came up for recording, MD Ravi wanted Md.Rafi to sing in the style of actor Radha Kishan. Md.Rafi accepted the challenge and rendered the song accordingly. Listen to this song. Arunji can provide more detail on actor/ comedian Radha Kishan.

Venkataramanji what quaint details you post. Your Rafi song is a masterpiece. What an imitation to beat the original voice. If I had just heard it over radio, would have been scratching my head to identify the singer.

When I posted the 1939 song, Tasveer Banane wale by Rafiq Ghaznavi & Khursheed, you said
“…..and I even dare to assume it may be the first song in Bollywood on this theme.”

I was not sure. On my search I found that there was a song Samne mere sada tasveer preetam ki khadi in the film Chintamnai (1931) and this may be the oldest song in Bollywood on this theme. Neither the audio nor the video of this song is available.

The oldest available song may the following one fron Lal-e-Yaman (1933)

Tasveer teri dil mera behla na sakegi is beautiful NFS rendered by Talat Mahmood when he was only 20 years of age and its lyricist Faiyyaz Hashmi was 24 years old. Most likely, this was Fayyaz Hashmi’s first song and Talat Mahmood’s first major hit. While on NFS let me post another Talat Mahmood’s Tasveer song. Another pleasant NFS.

N Venkatraman ji @58 ;

Your discriptive screenplay of painter Gopal Da brings back many memories of school days . In 50s the municipal corporation of delhi had made many , so called , Urinals which had a big blank wall used as a curtain to the entry and exit . A little distance was a Tonga Stand where a concrete water tub was provided for horses .

Right across our school entry gate was such place which was used by a camera man . He used wall as a prop for various rolled canvas paintings depicting scenes like Taj Mahal , Qutab Minar , Jhansi ki Rani , Rana Pratap , The old two seaters planes etc. With many options available this open air studio was famous for devotees visiting Birla Mandir ….getting themselves photographed against various props and keeping them as souvenirs . It was really a fun watching photographer taking fotos of couple and cutting their heads from the positives and pasting it on the readymade fotos of Rana Pratap riding a horse and the lady as Jhansi ki Rani . The Cameraman head was always under long black cloth attached to the big wooden still camera , as he was to do all the processing of slide foto negatives under dark conditions .

To cut a long story short , here is Johny Walker as cameraman wooing all to get them photographed in a very similar situation as described in my above childhood narration .

Foto Khinchale babu……Rafi……Pehli Raat [1959]…..Ravi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yj0_6FzXJDI

The interlude is quite similar to Sangam song ….Tere man ki ganga

I offer my apology . Some time in a big blog some errors , however small , do occur . This has happened many times with me while posting songs.

74 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 30, 2018 at 7:14 pm

The 1956 Guru Dutt directorial SAILAAB, starring Abhi Bhattacharya and Geeta Bali , was produced by Geeta Dutt’s brother Mukul Roy, who was also the composer. The film , coming after BAAZI,JAAL,BAAZ,AAR PAAR and MR & MRS 55 bombed at the box office leading to Geeta Dutt declaring personal bankruptcy.
The film had 10 songs…8 by Geeta Dutt, and 1 each by Lakshmi Roy and Hemant Kumar.
Coming to the song relavant to the post…
Kisi ki pyar ki tasveer ko ankhon mein paa kar ke…..Geeta Dutt, Madhukar Rajasthani,Mukul Roy.
Other lyricists…. Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri and Majrooh Sultanpuri.
Quite a collection!

75 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 30, 2018 at 7:17 pm

Bhatiaji,
Absolutely no need for an apology. It was actually nit picking from my side. Regretted posting soon after doing so. But, your reaction is genuine.

76 AVADH LAL March 30, 2018 at 10:24 pm

An eloquent post attracting equally commendable knowledgeable comments from some of the most respected music lovers.
With all respects to the experts like Mr. Venkatraman and Mr. Shetty, may I point out a small inaccuracy: The song from the film “Saanjh Aur Savera” is not at all about ‘tasveer’. The actual lyrics are: “Taqdeer (not tasveer) kahan le jayegi maloom nahin”.
I apologise for the nitpicking but just thought I had to put the record straight.
Once again thanks and regards,
Avadh Lal

77 AVADH LAL March 30, 2018 at 10:35 pm

Oh! I am extremely sorry. I goofed and inadvertently mentioned the name of Mr. Venkatraman, instead of Mr. Vasudevan.
Also, I seem to have missed out on the comment of Mumbaikar, who had already pointed out the same.
With apologies,
Avadh Lal

N Venkatraman ji,
While on painters, one should remember the multi faceted genius Baburao Painter(1890_1954)…a self taught artist,he started his career as a designer of backdrops and curtains for the stage. Then , painting bill boards and posters for movies, acting, writing, set designing, directing several silent movies and a few talkies.
M F Husain also was a painter of movie billboards and posters. His 1967 short film THROUGH THE EYES OF A PAINTER won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. GAJAGAMINI,2001, depicted his favourite Madhuri Dixit ( he had admitted to have been Fida over her beauty!) as the Muse of Kalidasa(Shakuntala)Michael Angelo ( Mona Lisa) and a photographer. I don’t know whether any of the songs ( MD..Bhupen Hazarika) mention tasveer.
He then directed MEENAXI_ THE TALE OF THREE CITIES,2004, with Tabu. Once again,I am not familiar with the music of the movie…A R Rehman.
We have some cinematographers turning into directors… Govind Nihalani, Manmohan Singh,Balu Mahendra,Shaji N Karun, Santhosh Shivan etc nearer home and many in Hollywood.

81 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty March 31, 2018 at 9:11 am

The 1983 Manoj Kumar production PAINTER BABU has a silly title song by Lata…. Painter Babu I love you…Qatil Shefai, Uttam Jagdish.
All the songs in the blog are the ones to be watched, while this is the one to be avoided! I remember the trauma of listening to it while getting ready for my MBBS exams, because the transistor would be on!

82 D P Rangan March 31, 2018 at 1:18 pm

Avadh Lalji Am seeing you for the first time. I welcome you to SOY on behalf of blog master. Thanks for the appreciation of the post.

Dr. Shetty – Thanks for the plethora of songs from you. Bhatiaji’s monopoly is at an end I presume. I am really useless in this regard considering my struggle to locate 15 songs on the theme when it is splattered everywhere as I see now. Please add more and more … ad infinitum.

Bhatiaji – The song from Talaq has the typical stamp of Chitragupta and I see a resemblance to a song from Opera House. Cannot place it.

83 ksbhatia March 31, 2018 at 2:49 pm

D P Rangan ji ;

Yes ,the song from Talaq is quite the likes of Chitragupt . C.Ramchandra composed the songs of Talaq but unfortunately in their next movie with same star cast the music direction of the movie Santan went to Dattaram. Here is one of its song carries the word Tasveer .

Dil ne use maan liya…..Mukesh…..Santaan…..Dattaram

I really appreciate the activeness of Dr. Shetty ….the speed at which he is posting the songs ; while we all are struggling .

I have a great regard for Venkatraman ji for his valuable comments and observations posted from time to time . This Blog is truly becoming one of the most sought after one …..due to many learned and passionate followers of the musical slice of the vintage globe !!

D P Rangan ji, ksbhatia ji,
Your praises,I know, arise from the kindness in your hearts. I should confess though most of the songs are jaane pehchane and sune huye, some are the results of search engines. ksbhatia ji’s medical appreciation is truly from the Cardia! Thank you both.
I am sure most of us have heard the following song in our childhood days and may be, afterwards, too.
AMAN,1967. Rafi and chorus. Shankar Jaikishan.
Barbaad Hiroshima ki tasveer dekh lo,
Insaan ki sabse badi taqseer dekh lo.
I am sure the more observant among you would have noticed that the lyricist is not mentioned. Wanted to write something extra on the same. It was the first time Prem Dhawan was working with SJ. Good lyrics, unusual rhyming of taqdeer with taqseer (misdemeanor). They worked for only one more movie afterwards.
AMAN also has the distinction of having Bertrand Russell in a cameo. He agreed to do the same because the theme of Anti Nuclear power was close to his heart!

87 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty April 2, 2018 at 7:15 pm

Jeevan, who has acted as Narad muni in more than 60 movies has lip synced…
Man ke kore kaagaz pe tasveer kheench lo Raam ki….
MATA VAISHNO DEVI,1971(B& W)..Manna Dey,B D Mishra, Dilip Roy.
Had never heard till yesterday!

88 ksbhatia April 2, 2018 at 11:28 pm

Dr. Shetty ;

I am glad we have now a company of a friend who can easily diagnose the feeling soul thru heart .

Yes, I am a bypass case and was operated in 2005 . During my engiography , while looking at monitor , I told my doctor that I am a bypass case. He asked me how could I guess ……told him that while constructing dams we too divert the river water by making bypass tunnels .

There has been instances in the past where song writer or singer missed their names in the credit titles and their have been good feel factor for some where the principal chorus were mentioned in the credit titles .e.g …Shree420.

Some of the films which missed main singers in the titles are

G.M. Durrani…..Hamara naam bhi likhdo ……Deedar

Mubarak Begam…..Kissa Laila Majnu ka [Nautanki song]…..Teesri Kasam . Even the lyricist of this song was not mentioned….may be because of it being a part of folk narration.

I saw Aman when it was released . It was a big disappointment for me ….poorly conceived , poorly directed . SJ music was not upto the mark and its song were quite off the main story . Aman ka farishta kahan ja raha hai…..was a big blow to the SJ hard hit listeners . However , the same trembling voice of Rafi sahib’s in…..Akele akele kahan ja rahe ho….from An Evening in Paris was a straight hit . I think Prem Dhawan might have been roped in owing to his perfection of writing Patriotic songs. Qamar Jalalabadi is another one who falls in this catg.

Yes, I too look for some songs where Sidies comedian and villain have sung some good songs on screen . Songs to look for are…..Jeevan , Pran, Rajendra Nath , Maruti etc. Likewise one can look for some good songs of C grade movies …..they really sound good .

Sorry, I did not notice that you had already posted the NFS by Hemant Kumar @44. My sincere apologies for the slip. Listened to the song Kuchh aisi pyaari shakl mere dilruba ki hai. A nice song.

There is a beautiful Kannada poem by the celebrated GopalaKrishna Adiga that roughly translates into…
There is a continuous flow of ambrose, the divine nectar, from one heart to another!
A common passion,a shared interest,a meaningful blog can connect strangers in a big way. Thanks to songs of yore, and the creator.

Yes, the MJS song has lots of pictures of the hero, Akshay Kumar, and should fit the theme perfectly.

That was good song, heard it for the first time.
There are a few present-day songs with the word Photo.

Kheech Meri Photo by Neeti Mohan, Akasa Singh, Darshan Raval, film Sanam Teri Kasam (2016), lyrics Sameer, music Himesh Reshammiya

97 N Venkataraman April 3, 2018 at 3:35 pm

Bhatiaji,
If photo/foto can be used in place of Tasveer, then why not words like Chhavi, Chitra etc.?
In the second part of the song Sakhee kaun desh raaje piyaraa by K L Saigal there is a line which mentions chhabi

Aur lagee poochhne kaho koi,
Ke sundar chhabi jiske kehte hai,
Wo kaun desh raaje piyaraa…

Although the word Chhabi occurs only once in the entire 6 minute+ -two part song, one would never get tired listening this song time and again.

Ranganji had posted the song (#16) written by Faiyyaz Hashmi, composed by Kamal Dasgupta and rendered by Talat Mahmood.

DP Rangan,
I never regulate the discussions. All comments are welcome. Any concern arises only if the language is intemperate and the views are likely to give offence to some person.

101 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty April 5, 2018 at 1:10 pm

The only photo song I can remember at once is the JAI HO….Thari photo nathi… which,I am sure, none of us like!
HEERA PANNA,BUDHA MIL GAYA,JAANE BHI DO YARON… There must be any number of movies dealing with photographers. But, photo as a part of the lyrics must be very rare.
Chavi/ Chabi looks like a word to be found in the songs of Mythological/ historical movies… Bharath Vyas,Pt Narendra Nath, Pradeep…
Chavi/ Chabi of another kind…as in Key..is easier to find.
Hum tum ek kamre mein bandh ho…aur chabi kho jaaye.
Tujhe Dil mein bandh kar loon, aur dariya mein phenk loon chabi.
Do bechare, bina sahare…bin thale ke chabi lekar phirte…

102 ksbhatia April 5, 2018 at 3:09 pm

Dr. Shetty ;

I am sure the word is Chhabi or Chhavi as suggested by Venkatramanji and not Chhabi which I think is altogether a different word.

Yes , there are quite a movies which have a character as cameraman and have no songs on fotos . Deven Verma appeared many times as photographer [ even in a punjabi movie too] . Rajendra Kumar and Raj Kapoor appeared in Do Jassos , Raj had earlier appeared in Reporter Raju too. I am trying to locate where a person is looking at or drawing a painting and singing as well . Your’s Rajesh Khanna posted song …..Jeevan se bhari teri aankhen…..is truly a class apart.

I am fascinated by a small poem/ doha sung by Geeta Dutt in Saranga [1960] movie . Sardar Mallik is the MD….a milestone for him to remember for ever.

Tum Kitne Sunder Ho……

103 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty April 5, 2018 at 5:44 pm

ksbhatia ji,
Of course, the two Chabi/Chavi are chalk and cheese. I just highlighted the phonetic similarity.
RK is a painter in MERE JEEVAN SATHI ,too. But,I don’t think any of the wonderful songs from the movie have the word tasveer/ Chabi.
Sculptors are plenty in our movies…GEET GAYA PATHARON NE,NEEL KAMAL,AKHRI KHAT….
I had seen a Sanjeev Kumar song on the YouTube some time back while searching for some other theme….late 60s/ early 70s… Arabic beats, SK in Arabic costumes.. dancing with gay abandon! The lyrics definitely have the word tasveer. This was one of the first songs to cross my mind on first reading the theme, but is still eluding me! I don’t recall the female with him!

Venkataramanji – You are right. The song at No. 2 of Sabsbag was composed by Vinod. I stand it corrected. That film had two music directors, Gulshan Shafi being the other one. I find he had composed music for two solos by Asha Bhonsle in that film.

116 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty April 9, 2018 at 5:31 pm

Shalane Lal ji,
Sachindranath was the given name of Chabi Biswas. His mother fondly called him Chabi because of his beautiful face and the name stuck. His performances in Tapan Sinha’s KABULIWALA,1956 and Satyajit Ray’s JALSAGHAR,1958 are very highly rated. He acted in a few Hindi movies, nothing very significant, though!

117 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty April 9, 2018 at 5:56 pm

N Venkatraman ji,
I count chupa lo lo yun dil mein pyar.. among my all time top 10 favorites and how could chabi not flash to me!
Thanks for the addition.
Though I did goof in repeating #2,it at least helped to establish Vinod as it’s composer, and not Gulshan Shafi.

118 N Venkataraman April 9, 2018 at 6:23 pm

Shalanji,
@115

Adding to what Pradipji wrote
Chhabi (Chhobi in Bengali) Biswas (1900-1962) was successful and popular Bengali film and stage actor who acted in more than 200 Bengali films.

There was also a distinguished Vaishnav Padavali Kirtan singer, Chhabi Bandopadhyay (1926-2012). She had lent her voice for 35-40 Bengali films.

PS: BTW The name of our neighbourhood washerman, whom I knew from my childhood and passed away a few year back, was Chhabilal.

It looks there is a lot of things Chhuppa Hua Hai in “Chhabi. A good look is needed at “Chhabi” to find plenty of information that would be more satisfying.

Very definitive information about the actor Chhabo or Chhabi Biswas. I wonder if he was related to Onil or Anil Biswas?

Shalan Lal

123 N Venkataraman April 11, 2018 at 1:07 pm

Shalanji @122

No, Chhabi Biswas was not related to Anil Biswas. Chhabi Biswas belonged to an aristocratic North Calcutta family. Chhabi is a very common name in eastern India, especially in Bengal and Orissa.
Chhabi Roy was a vintage Bengali actress, who acted sometime during 1939-49. She was the first heroine of the legendary Bengali actor of Uttam Kumar.

There is a poem / song written by Rabindranth Thakur “Tumi Keboli Chobi” (Are You Just A Mere Portrait). Let me narrate the anecdote relating to this song.
In October 1914 stayed in Allahabad, in a garden- house belonging to one of his relative, for a week or so. While staying there, he came across a portrait, portrait of somebody very near and dear, made long time back. That night he wrote the verse “Chobi”. Some say it was the portrait of Mrinalni Debi, wife of Rabindranth Thakur, who passed away in the year 1902. Others say it was the portrait of Kadambari Debi. Kadambari Debi was the wife of Rabindranath’s elder brother Jyotirindranath Thakur. Rabindranth was two years elder to Kadambari Debi and was very close to her. She was a great inspiration for young Rabindranth. She committed suicide for unsaid reasons four month after Rabindranth’s marriage. Rabindranath was crestfallen on her death. Coming back to the portrait (Chobi) under discussion, here is the explanation / expression given by Rabindranath, I would not call it an exact translation.
“Are you a mere picture, and not as true as those stars, true as this dust?

They throb with the pulse of things, but you are immensely aloof in your stillness, painted form.
The day was when you walked with me, your breath warm, and your limbs singing of life.
My world found, its speech in your voice, and touched my heart with your face.
You suddenly stopped in your walk, in the shadow- side of the forever, and I went on alone.
Life, like a child, laughs, shaking its rattle of death as it runs; it beckons me on, I follow the unseen;
but you stand there, where you stopped behind that dust and those stars; and you are a mere picture.

No, it cannot be. Had the life-flood utterly stopped in you, it would stop the river in its flow, and the footfall of dawn in her cadence of colours.
Had the glimmering dusk of your hair vanished in the hopeless dark, the woodland shade of summer would die with its dreams.
Can it be true that I forgot you? We haste on without heed, forgetting the flowers on the roadside hedge.
Yet they breathe unaware into our forgetfulness, filling it with music. You have moved from my world,
to take seat at the root of my life, and therefore is this forgetting-remembrance lost in its own depth.
You are no longer before my songs, but one with them. You came to me with the first ray of dawn. I lost you
with the last glimmer of the evening. Ever since I am always finding you through the dark. No, you are no mere picture.”
Rabindranath set this verse to music 15 years later on his birthday and later included it in his dance drama Shaapmochan in December 1931.

Here is another beautiful song penned by Pt. Narendra Sharma. The word Chhavi is in the 4th stanza (4:20).

Jyoti yashoda dharti Gaiyya

Venkat, Sheety, Shalan ;

The word ….Chabbi……itself shows the class …..that belongs to good poet or lyricist . Such thematic word can only be guessed to be in mythological / semi historical or in period movie song .

In a quick search mind goes to V. Shantaram movies where lyricists , composers , dance directors do their work in close co- ordination to project their best under able art director . Even in a comic situation song like …….Dhande ki kuchh baat karo kuchh paise jodo……from Navrang they did marvelous job . Beside C. Ramchandra , S.N.Tripathy and Vasant Desai were the other MDs who produced some rich classic numbers .

Birju Maharaj did some splendid classic dance direction in Satyajit Ray ….Shatranj Ke Khilari….. . Birju sang some classic dance numbers in this film also . Here is one such song [ Video not available ].

SAJDA,1991, Album by Lata Mangeshkar and Jagjit Singh.
Meri tasveer mein rang aur kisi ka toh nahin,
Gher len mujhko sub aankhen, main tamasha toh nahin….

A beautiful Mehdi Hassan song….
Main teri yaad ko is dil se mitatha kaise,
Tu koyee rait pe likhi huyi tahreer nahin,
Waqt ke saath jo mit jaaye woh tasveer nahin….
Lyrics… Qatil Shefai.
He sang it at many of his concerts. I think the song was used in a Pakistani movie.

Shalane Lal ji,
Satyajit Ray once said… I doubt if I could ever make JALSAGHAR without an actor of the calibre of Chabi Babu!… What a compliment from a maestro!
Chabi Biswas, with an aristocratic background, lived the complex role of Biswambhar Roy… Proud, reckless, passionately in love with music, obsessed with his only son, trying hard to hide from the world the fall of fortunes, the final tragic downfall….a myriad of emotions.
KABULIWALA’s protagonist Rehmat Khan left such an impression on the cine going Bengali people that Afghans in Kolkata were generically and generally called Rehmat Khan,no matter what their real names were!
He, along with Kanan Devi, played a pivotal role in mobilization of the film fraternity to organise relief work during the Great Bengal Famine. He continued his philanthropic work in later years, too.
He is one of the stalwarts of Bengali cinema.

I completely forgot about Sajda. It was a double cassette album, with sixteen Ghazals, 6 solos each by Lata Mangeshkar and Jagjit Singh and 4 duets. Thanks for mentioning the song Meri tasveer mein rang aur kisi ka toh nahin. It would be useful if you provide the links to the songs you mention. Main teri yaad ko is dil se mitatha kaise is also a nice addition.
I recollect that Jagjit Singh had rendered the song Tasveer banata hoon as a tribute to Talat Mahmood. While on the subject of Ghazals, here is one by Ghulam Ali.

JWALA,1958/1971,Lata, Asha, Shailendra, Shankar Jaikishan.

JWALA,a Madhubala, Sunil Dutt starrer, that started in 1958 got delayed due to various reasons, Madhubala’s illness being one of them. The music, most of the shooting was ready in 1958. Asha Parekh can be seen in a small role. The movie was released after Madhubala’s demise, and is her last released movie.
It is said that Asha Parekh, who was a major star by then, was upset that while KATI PATANG,MERA GAON MERA DESH, CARAVAN and PYAR MOHABBAT were running,a project,13 years old, having her in an insignificant role should be screened!
JWALA is the last Sunil Dutt,Rafi,SJ combination…. this is for statistics/ trivia lovers.

Thanks for the appreciation. But the translation is not mine, by Rabindranath himself. I have mentioned
“here is the explanation / expression given by Rabindranath, I would not call it an exact translation.”

Yes, the song was rendered by many Bengali singers, but I chose Debabrata Biswas he stands tall among all of them and one of the stalwarts in Rabindra Sageet rendition.

Thanks for providing the link to the song from Jwala. I wonder, why the word chhabi is associated with many devotional songs especially that of Lord Krishna. What could be the reason?

Bhatiaji,
@ 137
Finding rare pearls by deep diving and bringing them to the shores of Songs of Yore has become normal to the expert divers like you. Sunder Nari Pritam Pyari (chhab song) did not come to my mind. Is Dil Se Teri Yaad Bhullayi nahi jaati (Tasveer song) was a new addition to my treasure. Thanks for posting them and the two more versions of Chhabi Dikhla Ja by Kalpana Zokarkar and Pt. Vasantrao Deshpande. Both made good listening.

Let me share some of the wandering reflections of a fossilized brain.

Tasveer or an image is a virtual object. Nature provides several examples of such illusory objects. like the rainbow or the reflection in the surface of a water pool. Rainbow looks like a multicolored path in the sky. We all know there is no path in the sky, but it is a virtual image cause by the interaction of light-rays with raindrops. Similarly the image of an object placed in front of a mirror is a perception, a virtual object. From time immemorial human beings had always been making such virtual objects, like a painting or a drawing other human beings or trees or flower etc. All these are images which existed for perception.

There are various mythical stories about a virtual object being confused for a real object. The Mahabharat story of Maya Sabha (Hall of Illusions) at Indraprastha is well known. Duryodhan was mesmerized by its splendor and was confused by its illusory nature. He could not differentiate between the real and the virtual and repeatedly faltered.

There is also a Chinese story of a painter whose painting of a forest was so realistic that he walked into it and got lost.

We would find similar anecdotes on Greek painters Zeuxis and his contemporary Parrhasius. When Zeuxis unveiled his painting of grapes, they appeared so real that birds flew down to peck at them. But when Parrhasius, whose painting was concealed behind a curtain, asked Zeuxis to pull aside that curtain, the curtain itself turned out to be a painted illusion.

And many more……..

The two songs posted by Ranganji , song no.16 and song no.12 reminds me of an incident related to Piccaso, albeit fictional. A young man sneaked into the villa of Picasso and had a good leisurely look at the paintings. When he was about to leave, Picasso who had noticed him, hailed him, offered him a seat and a drink and asked his opinion about the paintings. The young man honestly confessed ‘they are alright, but I find them unrealistic’. Picasso nodded in agreement. When the young man was about to get up, the master asked him ‘do you have a girl friend back home?’ The young man took out a photograph of his girl friend from his wallet. Picasso took the photograph in his hand and said ‘Just three inches high, that is a very tiny woman. Tell me, how do you make love to her?’

‘Tasveer teri dil mera behla na sakegi , Jo baat tujh me hai teri tasveer mein nahi’

139 N Venkataraman April 12, 2018 at 8:55 pm

Some more of my stray thoughts.

The origin of the word Tasveer, I guess, must be Arabic. I believe the Arabic phrase Rusim Taswir refers to Drawing, Painting, Picture, Sketch etc. I find the word Tasveer in many languages, Like Pashto.

Pashto, also known as Pathani in Hindi and Afghani in Persian, is spoken in Afghanistan, eastern Iran, and north-western Pakistan. There is a Pashto song, ‘Zama tasweer darsara shata’ by Rabia Tabassum and penned by Dr. Saghir Khattak. I am not sure of its country of origin. Since Rabia Tabassum was a promising Pashto singer from Kabul, it can be from Afghanistan.

I do not know whether the word is used in Kashmir’s Koshur language, but I found this word in a Kashmiri song, ‘Yara Chani Husnuk Tasveer’ by Mohd. Abdullah Shaksaaz, folk I suppose. This song is lengthy, but has a folk aura.
I am not posting the songs. The songs may not be very appealing to many. If anybody has the inclination, the songs are available in YT for listening.

Similarly, the word Tasveer is found in Punjabi language too. Bhatia ji can add more on this. Here is a song rendered by Noorjehan from a Pakistani film.

Mere Dil De Sheeshe Wich Sajna Payi Sajdi Ae Tasveer Teri by Noorjehan, film Wohti Da Sawal Ay (1982)

N Venkatraman ji thinks about mirror and image in it and a song appears in my mind’s mirror out of nowhere,at 2.35 AM( I was woken up to attend an emergency and visited the blog afterwards!… the explanation for the hour!)…In fact,it was one of the first batch of songs I had remembered on reading the title of this blog and I am not very sure I haven’t already posted it.
Aaina hai mera chehra,is mein tasveer tum dekh lo….Lata, Asha, Suresh Wadkar; Sameer,Dileep Sen,Sameer Sen. 1993?
The movie itself,a Yash Chopra production, was a little hat ke and the songs were popular then. Good performances by Jackie Shroff, Amrita Singh and Juhi Chawla. They were the days of own VCRs and library borrowed video cassettes. How things become obsolete and antiquated in a short span of time! LPs, Transistors, Audio cassettes, Video cassettes,CDs… Recently,a semi literate taxi driver, whose family doctor I am, was telling me..Sir, next time you want to take a trip to Bengaluru, hire my taxi. I have a nice collection of vintage era songs. Cadettes? I asked him. He looked at me in surprise and said,No, Pen drive!

Venkatraman ji , Dr. Shetty ji ;

I am really enjoying your adventurous life you are living , alternating between real and virtual . Yes, Rainbow and Miraj has been the earliest virtual happenings after skylight thunders , the two creating a wonderful experience while the later tagged to fear .

My mind goes to my early childhood when I was introduced to Pin Hole Camera by my elder brother [elder by 8 years ] . It was really a fun watching inverted pictures on oil stained paper at the back of the black paper box in a dark pitched room. This adventure led to playing with lenses , that were costing just one or two annas ….usually bought from the balloon and toy street seller or from the patri wala toy sellers forming row of lines in front of Hanuman Mandir or Birla Mandir . Focussing images of doors and windows on white walls and getting inverted images again was a big teaser and hence a challenge . I was finally successful in getting the upright image by fixing convex lenses in an empty cylindrical talcum powder box [ I remember it was Himalaya Bouquet powder of 1955 ]. My this experiment surprised all in the family.

My passion with optics grew and I was a fast learner of science . I mastered my chapters on concave , convex lenses and mirrors and practically found all the positions of lenses and mirrors where I could locate the size and other properties of images …real or inverted , magnified or reduced . This again led to making of a slide projector which after so many years was used by my wife for teaching her science students . As of now it is with a school where my daughters passed out about twenty years back .

In between I enjoyed viewing little stories thru Bioscope , again a beautifully decorated box fitted on a triangular framed legs . The box fitted with four large magnifying convex lenses and vinyl record player too.

All these were the turn of events , or lets say passions , which led to satisfying my inner urge to become cinema buff as well as engineer.
The passion is continuing thru association of like minded people we all are . I will revert back with some punjabi songs too.

……oohps , failed to add the following para…

The other day I was listening to Jagmohan and Pankaj Mullick songs and came across one by Jagmohan’s masterpiece …..Yeh chand nahin teri aarsi hai . Not knowing the meaning of Aarsi …went to Google for help…and the meaning is…

An ‘aarsi’ is an ornament that is worn by women on their thumbs that has a small convex mirror that they can use to look at their own face to check if their hair/make-up looks alright.

Now I am looking for …..Haath kangan ko aarsi kya ?

Dr. Pradeep Kr.Shetty ji,
Hats off to you for your dedication towards your patients and profession. Then at almost 3 am at night you had the inclination not only to visit the blog, but also to post a comment and song too. . I admire your high spirits.
I still listen to cassettes. And my cassette player is in working condition and I have a collection of about 400 cassettes. Pen drive, external Hard disk etc. no doubt, are handy and have a huge storage space. But recently my external hard disk crashed and I lost my collections and compilations stored in it.
While listening to the songs on Tasveer, Chhabi etc, I noticed that our attention is more inclined towards the lyrics and that is a welcome diversion.
The flow of Tasveer songs continues abated. Here is another song.

Dr.Pradeep Kr.Shetty ji,
You did not provide the link to the song Na kajre ki dhaar from Mohra (1994). The link that you provided for the Mukesh version is no longer available. I found that there were three versions of this song in the film Mohra (1994). In fact Viju Shah, son of Kalyanji, had recycled the earlier version sung by Mukesh, whose composers were Kalyanji- Anandji. The lyrics for both the earlier and the later version were by Indeevar. Only the Pankaj Udhas version was different (lyrics) and has the word Tasveer . All the versions made good listening. I do not remember hearing them before. Thanks for bring them to the fore.

In the 1943 film Tasveer there was a song Is Se Kahi Acchi Hai Ek Tasveer. Since the link to the song is not available let us listen to some recent numbers.

The first one by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Towards the when he renders the sargams in high octave he exudes great energy.
Nigaho Se Khenchi Hai Tasveer from the album Tasveer

The second one
Kitanee Baate Yad Aati Hai by Sadhana Sargam and Hariharan, film Lakshya (2004), lyrics Javed Akhtar, music Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Kitni baatein yaad aati hai
Tasveerein se ban jati hai
Main kaise woh bholo
Dil ko kya samjao

Pradeepji , Bhatiaji,
I think we must have posted approximately 100 Tasveer songs, where as Chhavi songs should add up to a dozen+. We also had a few songs with the word photo. Compared to Tasveer songs, Chhavi / Chhabi songs are far less in number.

I infer Chhavi, Chitra and its variations must have originated from Sanskrit and it is likely that we fill find them in songs penned by Pt.Narendra Sharma, Neelkanth Tiwari, Rammoorti Chaturvedi and their likes.

Let me open another front: Songs with the word Chitra/ Chitr/ Chitar. The number of songs in this category, I doubt, should be even lesser. I think only one song with word Chitr/ Chitra has been posted till now. Our most reliable search engine, Mumbaikarji is less active. Both of you are in fine form and I expect you to dig out a few songs.

The 1942 film Sachha Sapna had two songs. Ek Nirala Chitra Banaoon and Dil Ki Tasveer Zamane Ko Dikhlane . But link to both the songs are not available. To begin with here is one from me.

Hey chandarvadan, chanda ki kiran

Synonyms like ‘chhabi’ dramatically expand the scope of the post. But then, why not ‘surat’? That would be an easy way to make this the post with the largest number of comments!

153 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty April 20, 2018 at 11:04 am

N Venkatraman ji,
Yes,chitr will be a very rare word to be used in songs and hence very difficult to find…. like a four leaf clover!
One of the first images to come to my mind on first reading the blog was of the lovely mountains in the song…
Ye kaun chitrakar hai…..
Mukhesh, Bharat Vyas, Sathish Bhatia,
BOOND JO BAN GAYI MOTI,1967.
I am sure you all agree with my first observation that words of Sanskrit origin like these are to be found in the lyrics by Bharat Vyas, Narendra Sharma…
Difficult Urdu words….Sahir,Kaifi Azmi…
Unusual images…. Gulzar, Prasoon Joshi…
Little hat ke words…Neeraj….
I am sure some mythological/ fantasy movies should have the word.
Cansaya ji,
Soorat may not fit with the intent of the original theme. For that matter, not even chavi/ chabi. Chitr….an absolute fit.

154 N Venkataraman April 20, 2018 at 12:15 pm

Dr.Pradeep Kr.Shetty ji,

Songs with the word Chitr may be very rare to find , but the mention of four-leaved clover may prove lucky and may turn the tide.

The word Musavvir too comes in many songs. Can the songs with the word Chitrakaar be posted here? As you have said we have stretched the theme to a few allied words.

You have an ear for the lyrics and the lyricist too. Yes, I have already mentioned my view/ agreement on this.

Yeh Kaun Chitrakaar Hai is a pleasant song and it was the first song to cross my mind too. I am providing the link here.

Bharat Vyas has used the word Chitera in a song for the film Navrang . You will find it towards the end of the song (02:52)

Venkatraman ji;

The sub subjects are always good teaser to the main theme….sort of an appendix . Yes, there seems to be not much songs with chitr. I have a suggestion….to locate songs where hero or heroine is holding a tasveer or a painting or even a camera but never using any word like….tasveer, foto or chitr in the song . Three or four songs are immediately coming in my mind . If Approve we can have a ball on this sub theme.

156 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty April 20, 2018 at 8:28 pm

N Venkatraman ji,
Yes, as soon as I read Shyamal Shyamal bharan…. I realised…Oh! Yes!
Thank you for the splendid discovery.
ksbhatia ji,
Hero/ heroine with a tasveer/ painting/ camera…. the blog would be flooded with posts. First in the category would be one holding one’s beloved’s picture. Then, two close friends holding the picture of his/ her beloved, not realising that the person in both the pictures is the same! Followed by… parents’ / sibling’s pictures ( missing or dead…more than the living!), a teacher, benefactor, one sided or lost love…Of a God/ deity/ celebrity/ nation…. The list should go on .
Like you, there are about a dozen songs flooding my mind. Shall wait. But, can’t resist mentioning one… since childhood, the image ( picture!) is in my mind.
Kis liye maine pyar kiya…. THE TRAIN,1970. Lata,Anand Bakshi,RDB.
The Touring theatre in the town I grew up in used to blast some songs before the show or the evening… about a dozen of them… some running for years!… The Train songs, Gulabi aankhen and Chainyaare sainya re… were among these. But, strangely, Ki liye…. got permanently etched on my mind!

Three of you have created many mini blogs in this tasveer bolg chupke chupke I was enjoying it.

You have opened another sub-theme. Is it necessary that the hero or heroine should hold a tasveer or a painting or even a camera in their hand? Can we post songs where we can find them in the frame and very much related to the posted song?
It is likely that the first song that came to my mind might be there in your short list. I will wait for your posting. I will post another song.

Mumbaikarji,

The song fits the bill. Nice addition.

161 AK April 21, 2018 at 10:18 pm

Venkataramanji,
Fabulous start to ‘holding the picture’ song. Vazhkai song is an imitation of Chup chup khade ho, but its picturisation is identical to Sainya dil mein ana re.

162 AK April 21, 2018 at 10:22 pm

KS Bhatiaji, Venktaramanaji, Dr Shetty, Mumbaikar8,
I was following your discussion on ‘chitra’, ‘chhabi’ etc. with interest. You gave up ‘chitra’ too soon. I thought someone would post this perfect ‘chitra’ song:

Madhur milan ka chitra banaayein by Surendra and Maya Banerjee from Comrades (1939), music Anil Biswas

163 N Venkataraman April 21, 2018 at 11:59 pm

AKji,
@162.
That was fantastic, master stroke! There is a saying in Bengali, ‘Ustad-er maar sesh raate’ literally meaning ‘the master’s hit comes at the end of the night’.

164 N Venkataraman April 22, 2018 at 12:09 am

Here is another ‘holding the picture’ song, although Subha Kote holds the picture of Agha only for 10 seconds in the begining.

AK ji ;

In my middle school days our History and Geography teacher used to stress to draw maps in our answers as per those shown in Atlas maps [ his famous line in hindi was…..Jaise maan chitr mein dekhaiya gaya hai ]. I was a good at free hand drawing those days [ and still I am] and so I used to draw quickly. At one moment the teacher addressed the boys to draw …..Jaise Bhatia ne banaya hai . It became a joke that whenever teacher wanted to quote Atlas, the boys would jump to correct him …jaise Bhatia ne banaya hai.

It is really a fun when word …chitr ….was suggested ; all of us instantly thought of ….yeh kaun chitrkar hai.

I had another theme in mind where the actor has all the essential painting or other art material in his shoulder bag , singing or not singing as criteria ….such as Raj Kapoor in Anari…kisi ki muskartoan…or Dilip Kumar in Madhumati…or Saira appearing in Shammi kapoor’s view finder of that famous Yashika camera in Junglee. These little topics do generate some interest but many may opt as silent spectator .

The sub theme of ….Tasveer, Painting , Camera; but with no song carrying words like tasveer , foto etc. Dr . Shetty is already excited with the idea and has expanded the theme further as suggested by him @156. The subject will be too heavy to handle and I suggest we should first restrict to actors only, hero , heroin , comedian etc.

Over to Venkatraman ji.

166 ksbhatia April 22, 2018 at 12:25 am

AK ji ;

Lo ; the song already started pouring . Nice song posted by Venkatraman ji . For tasveer no matters if it is on the table or hanging on the wall , looking at or not, or holdind in hand but should have a hint to be part of the song of the theme.

167 ksbhatia April 22, 2018 at 12:33 am

AK ji ;

Nice song from Comrades . What surprised me is its fast pace, beats and rhythm from an era when most of the songs were slow to very slow. I think i have to dig out such fast paced songs for my interest.

168 ksbhatia April 22, 2018 at 12:39 am

AK ji ; D P Rangan ji;

I am beginning with a fast number…

Venkataramanji @163,
No master stroke in this. Madhur milan ka chitra banayein I had mentioned in the post ‘Anil Biswas’s best songs for Bombay’s Saigal: Surendra’. This song has stuck with me since then.

KS Bhatiaji,
Nice story of your school days. You can obviously relate to chitra more intimately than we can.

Lead actor holding a ‘picture’ of his or her beloved opens an entirely new vista. That requires not only remembering the song, but also the picturisation. It was good enough for a separate post, but it is good that we are discussing it here.

170 mumbaikar8 April 22, 2018 at 8:34 am

AK,
As Venkataramanji has stated Comrades song is indeed a master stroke!

Venkataramanji. Bhatiaji,
Holding the picture song will be challenging with the memory I possess☹
Ziddi tasveer song teri surat nahin milti is as holding picture song, the other I comes to my mind
Bin dekhe aur bin pahchhane he holds the tasveer briefly though

Akji,
@169
To execute the right strokes at the right moment is the sign of a class player. Timely recall or recollection of one’s stored knowledge/ wisdom/ technique is the exquisite preserve of an experienced hand.

172 N Venkataraman April 22, 2018 at 12:58 pm

Bhatiaji,
@165
Here in SoY we not only share memories, thoughts, songs etc, but the most essential by-product is the shared happiness. And it is positively infectious. That is what is significant and important. Thank you for sharing your school day anecdote.

The sub themes on Chitr, Chahvi etc. were allied to the main theme of this blog. I ambled further away into the subject of Chitrakars and Chiteras. I think we should leave out the Chitrakars and Mussavirs from our realm. However we can meander into discussions, recollections etc., etc.

173 N Venkataraman April 22, 2018 at 1:01 pm

Mumbaikarji,
Nice to see that you too have entered the field.
I thought of posting the song Yaad Na Jaaye Beete Dinon Ki, and then found that Dr, Shetty had mentioned it earlier (@20). But, the picturisation part was not in the fore and the link to the song was not provided. But then again Bhatiaji had set few conditions (@155) – “to locate songs where hero or heroine is holding a tasveer or a painting or even a camera but never using any word like….tasveer, foto or chitr in the song. Thus this song does not comply with one of the conditions, since the word Tasveer is there in the lyrics. However he had relaxed the other condition (@166). “For tasveer no matters if it is on the table or hanging on the wall, looking at or not, or holding in hand but should have a hint to be part of the song of the theme”. Here lies the trick. You will have to listen to entire song (lyrics) and pay attention the picturisation too.
Let me post song, you will find at least half a dozen photographs of the heroine (Sadhana ), on the table, on the wall……

Fantastic song ; photographs every where displayed. Its like maximising differential equation and getting maximum of HQ song. Raja Mehndi Ali Khan and Madan Mohan combo at its best so also Rafi sahib. Nice picturisation .

176 ksbhatia April 22, 2018 at 3:43 pm

Ms. Mumbaikar8 ;

The song from ….Jab pyar kisise hota hai ….is one of my fav.and so also the movie. Such movies of the early 60s were the trend setters matching the growth of the modernisation , fashion and urbanisation . Dev anand acted as civil engineer and so was Nasir Hussain in real life. As such the location / scenes all were very close to some major hydro project where excavation were shown by blastings and thus a zone for filming the climax….fight between Pran and Devanand .

Nasir Hussain’s films always had comedy role reserved for Rajendranath who was always shown as brainy with a donkey head . And this he always showed symbolically in many of his films during a song . In Jab pyar kisi se hota hai ….the first song itself carried the shots of donkey…..a reserve of Rajendranath .

His Filmalya’s Dil Deke Dekho too showed donkey many time in the following song which satisfy the condition of holding camera by actor.

Pyar ki kasam hai…Rafi, Asha….Dil Deke Dekho….Usha Khanna

Canasya,
Sapne mein sajan se do baatein – To think that such a beautiful song, in fact one of the best of MM-Lata Mangeshkar had this controversy around it. If her picture was going to be used in this comic scene, it diminishes the song. But thanks a lot for mentioning the back story.

It’s nice to have people around you respecting and appreciating one’s work passionately done. Many stalwarts in movie making industries did splendid jobs to carry over this magic media to greatest peak of film making art . Some Known and Some Unknown .! Really Yes , Listen to the following two songs ; one from a very popular movie of the early 50s with top star cast and MD ; and the other one of the mid 50s with less known cast at that time and never known MD . Both leave you spellbound of the final results.

Listen and enjoy to your heart content….

1. Aye jaane jigar…..Mukesh…Aaram[1951]….Anil Biswas….

Here we have Devanand as painter drawing painting of Madhubala as Model and Premnath singing beautiful song composed by Anil Biswas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp38GCGFdaA

2. Majhi meri naiya ko….Lata…Char Paise[1955]…B D Burman…

Lata at her sweetest humming and singing right from heart. I tried to check up other movies of B D Burman but failed. Perhaps this is the only movie he had done. Any relation to S D Burman or R D Burman is also not clear. Any clue reported shall well be appreciated.

Interesting. Song #2 took me to Maanjhi meri kismet ke ji chaahe jahan le chal from Hum Hindustani (1960). Such uncanny resemblance in the mukhada!

Cansyaji @ 175, Akji @ 177,
I was curious to know how the portions, before and after the deleted song, were handled by the editor. In the process I saw the entire movie. A nice entertaining movie. But even after the deletion of the said song, the photo of Lata Mangeshlar is very much there in the film. I do not think the picturisation of the song could have been comical. The dialogue that follows and precedes the song may be objectionable. Can the removal of the song be attributed to Lata’a objection? Anyway, I was not aware of this song or the movie. Thanks for the information and song.

185 N Venkataraman April 24, 2018 at 8:02 pm

Bhatiaji
That must be minimal exposition of the Camera in this case. Rajendranath and the camera remain in the frame hardly 5-6 seconds (@176). And the second song with a camera.

Thanks for those wonderful postings @ 180, 181 and 182.

I think B D Burman was discussed earlier; I cannot remember the post or the context. A search yielded the following info. It seems he too is from the Tripura royal family. His name was Barendra Dev Burman. He had given music to one more film, Mohabbat Zindabad (1962)

Sorry, You are right. In fact there were set of frames (01:41-01:45, 02:03-02:08 and again at 03:44-03:50) where Rajendranath with camera makes an appearance. I stand corrected.

So many songs with Cameras and photographs. All good additions.

Dr Pradip Kr.Shettyji,
It seems to me that the word Tassavur does not suit the theme. I am not nitpicking. I am not very familiar with Urdu words and its diction. I think Tassavur means imagination, kalpana or even dream (@190). Correct me if I am wrong. AKji and our companions can help us.

You are right. ‘Tasavvur’ means imagination.

ksbhatia ji,
PARICHAY was Ved Pal’s debut film. He teamed up with Shailesh Dave.
More on him later. Heading for a wedding reception ( of a family in which I have treated four generations of members for various ailments). For the doctors who have crossed their 70s , this is a very common thing. But, for my age group ( mid fifties) it is a rarity. Can afford to miss a friend/ family’ s function, but not of our patients. They feel too bad!
