Chorus Songs in the Hindi Films of Yore: Part 3

26 May 2019

Guest article by Shalan Lal

(After the earlier two articles covering the 1930s and 1940s, Shalan Lal concludes her three-part thesis on chorus songs with the Golden Decade of the 1950s. As we have come to expect from her, these articles do not merely present the representative songs of the period, but also take us into the evolution of the song-making system, from the birth of talkies in 1931 to the 50s, and its impact on the popular culture. She highlights the factors that make the fifties such a fascinating period. I thank her for her diligent work and valuable contribution towards studying a specific type of songs, which are generally subsumed in the general category of duets. Songs have been numbered continuously from the first part.– AK)

Three Decades of Chorus Songs
Introduction and the Third Decade 1951-60clip_image002

Now we come to the enthralling, exciting and incredible fifties, i.e. the dazzling golden age of the Hindi film songs and dances, stardust all around, gossips and the rise of filmy journals in most of the 18 states with various languages and dialects of India. Places where Gandhi and Nehru did not reach, there the Hindi films and songs and filmy stories reached, seducing the audience. Winding gramophone records played songs at religious festivals and jatras. Film posters and hoardings went up all over the place around which the monkeys and birds happily chirped and twitted.

Harmandir Singh ‘Hamraz’, in the eighties, brooded for a long time on his curiosity about the film songs and their origin and decided to find out which song was from which film, who sang it and who composed the melody etc. He made many trips to Bombay from his base in Kanpur where he was working for a bank. Only a few people had some memories and memorabilia, many film studios were in ruins and occupied by the homeless, beggars, vagabonds and all kinds of suspicious characters squatting in filth. However things were difficult, Harmandirji was not going to be put off. He found the people who would give him information and willingly part with the film booklets, posters and their memories etc.

With all the difficulties and all the stone-walls he faced he finally managed to create brick by brick some order in his information. Eventually he brought out a voluminous book about the songs of the films that were made in the 1950s. Why fifties? Because whenever a film music was played either on radio or in any roadside stall or in a shantytown or in a sophisticated residential bank quarters or some restaurants only the fifties music was played. In the seventies and eighties the film music was not that appealing in the films.

But his fifties book suddenly caught up the eyes of fans of music, journalists and those people who were once or still in the film world. He was showered with letters of praise and phone calls etc. and he became a celebrity. He then got himself busy in working on the songs of forties, then on to the sixties, and lastly on the 1930s as this was the most difficult decade to find information on. After a hiatus of some years he also brought out Volume V for the decade of 1971-80, and Volume VI for half the decade 1981-85.

His monumental six volumes of a dictionary or an encyclopaedia of the Hindi film songs is worth double doctorate from reputed universities. Without these works I would not have been able to write posts as I have done, nor so many blogs or research on film music would have been possible. So I am extremely grateful and indebted to him, and I have no hesitation in saying that he should have been given highest awards for his contribution towards information regarding Hindi film music.

Now my last lap of this post is about the “Hallucinating Fifties”!

The fifties started with full throttle in the top gear with music, songs and dances. All cinema houses got overflooded with the cinema goers rushing to see the films. More cinema houses were built with many facilities for the audience to relax and enjoy all over India in big cities and small towns. Previously there were no toilets for women. But many theatre owners considered and created them for ‘Ladies’ in newly built pleasure places for the film showrooms. Most of the English Theatres in the downtown Bombay called Fort Area had already built in ‘Ladies’ as they were for the ladies of the British Raj.

Following is the scene of the ‘Capitol Theatre’ at the right side of Bombay’s ‘Victoria Terminus’ generally known as VT in fifties. Now the VT is called a mouthful name ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus’. During the heydays of the British, the Capitol Theatre was for the opera, western music, and English plays and films for the British audiences. Inside and outside the building is an architectural wonder and heritage. But in the fifties it started showing Hindi films. It is built of stones from Rajasthan then Rajputana.

Look at the police in pagadi in the left that was yellow and the police were called ‘Pili Pagadi’.

The first most watched film of the fifties was Albela (1951), made by Bhagwan Arts, music by C Ramchandra and acted in by Bhagwan and Geeta Bali.

clip_image006

So far Bhagwan had made only cheap films along with his Pehlwan actor Baburao and enjoyed comical chases and what was called ‘stunt’ fights in crime thrillers. But his onetime-partner in films, C Ramchandra, who from the middle of the forties started composing music and singing in films, suggested to him to make a social film. So Bhagwan wrote the story and script of the film about a starry-eyed film addict watcher. C Ramchandra got Rajendra Krishna to write the lyrics and he composed lilting and dancing numbers. Except two or three songs out of twelve, he composed them on light tunes based on the Latin American music. The film became a huge success and to date it is remembered for its music and dances of Bhagwan.

At the end of forties Roop K Shorey wrote the story and script, and became producer-director of the film, Ek Thi Ladki (1949). The music was composed by a youthful Punjabi music director Vinod. The film had a riot of songs, chase and comedy with Meena Shorey, Motilal, Majnu etc. All songs in this film were great and one particular chorus song based broadly on the Punjabi rhythm cycle and tune, Lara lappa lara lappa laai rakhda, Aadidappa Aadidappa laai rakhadada, created a storm. The song was well choreographed and first time comically based on the differences between male and female. To date this song is remembered.

For the film Albela, C.Ramchandra composed a similar song on the comical differences between men and women. All the songs in Albela became super hit and made the film a great box office success. For my next choice I choose the song:

23. भोली सूरत दिल के खोटे by C Ramchandra, Lata Mangeshkar and chorus from Albela (1951), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music C Ramchandra

The next chorus is composed by Salil Chowdhury who spent a great deal of his early time at the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), Calcutta. He was an all-round musician, a story and script writer of many Hindi and Bengali films. There was an exhibition of the American-European films for the first time in Delhi. Nehru inaugurated it and made some snide remarks about escapist films of the Indian film makers. There was an immediate response and many producers made films that had stark realism in them. Do Bigha Zameen was one of them and very much appreciated for the great acting of Balraj Sahni.

24. हरियाला सावन ढोल बजाता आया by Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar and chorus from Do Bigha Zameen (1953), lyrics Shailendra, music Salil Chaudhary

If there was one film that made the decade dazzling like Hollywood at its zenith, with all the skills in creating a mammoth film, it had to be Aawara. Raj Kapoor catapulted himself from a failure to success with a small budget film Barsaat into the razzmatazz of the Bollywood of the tinsel town, and by the power of Aawara he parachuted himself into the International film world as the Indian ‘Orson Welles’, a great film maker of dignity.

So my next choice for the chorus song is from the film Aawara. It is very artistic and a metaphoric song that has three parts and a dream sequence never ever dreamed by any filmmaker earlier. Stage design-wise it is artistic at par with the great European modern artists’ art work.

25. Tere bina aag ye chandni (तेरे बिना आग ये चांदनी) by Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar and chorus from Aawara (1951), lyrics Shailendra, music Shankar-Jaikishan

Part 1

Rita in Lata’s voice:
Aa aa aa aa
Tere bina aag ye chandni
Tu aaja tu aaja
Tere bina aag ye chandni
Tu aaja tu aaja
Tere bina besuri bansuri
Ye meri zindagi dard ki ragini
Tu aaja tu aaja
Tu aaja tu aaja
Tu aaja tu aaja

Part 2: Backed by the chorus
Raj in Manna Dey’s voice:

Ye nahi ye nahi hai zindagi
Zindagi ye nahi zindagi
Zindagi ki ye chita mein
Zinda jal raha hun haaye
Saans ke ye aag ke
Ye teer cheerte hain aar paar
Oooh  Oooh, Oooh

Mujhko ye narak na chahiye
Mujhko phool mujhko preet mujhko geet chahiye
Mujhko chahiye bahar
Mujhko chahiye bahar
Mujhko chahiye bahar
Mujhko chahiye bahar

clip_image022 clip_image023

Part 3 continues
Rita in Lata’s voice supported by the Chorus

Aa aa aa aa aa aa
Ghar aya mera pardesi pyas bujhi meri ankhiyan ki
Tu mere man ka moti hai, in nainon ki jyoti hai
Yaad hai mere bachpan ki,
Ghar aya mera pardesi
Aa aa aa aa aa aa

Ab dil tod ke mat jana
Roti chhod ke mat jana
Kasam tujhe meri ansuwan ki
Ghar aya mera pardesi
Aa aa aa aa aa aa
(Music: Tabla and other instruments)
Aa  aa aa aa aa aa

(End of the dream sequence, choreographed and directed by Madam Simki)

My next chorus song is from the Guru Dutt film Jaal (1952).. This film made Dev Anand a glorious matinee idol and achieved the success he was chasing from his days with Guru Dutt in the Prabhat Film Company which was limping without V Shantaram.

I find it difficult to choose one chorus song from Jaal as they are so good. So do not blame me for my choice.

clip_image025clip_image026

26. पिघला है सोना दूर गगन पर by Lata Mangeshkar and chorus from Jaal (1952), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music SD Burman

The next choice is from the weird and wonderful film Udan Khatola (1955) made by Sunny Arts. SU Sunny was a close friend of Naushad and probably he was financed by Naushad himself. The film is based on an imaginary island dominated by women reminding the Prabhat film called Wahan (1937). A plane comes and crashes on this island and Dililip Kumar finds himself being looked after by pretty women – a dream of every man sitting in the stalls of the cinema houses. ‘Aage parde par dekhiye…’

HFGK calls this melody as chorus. ‘Haiya re….more sainyaji utarenge paar ho, nadiya dhire baho…. – this was a classical ditty usually sung for hours by some Khan Saheb developing all the classical khubiyan. But here Naushad made it sugar-sweet in Lata and chorus voices. All the songs in this film are of high octane and sweet. In this Naushad used all the skills he learned in his boyhood days when he was working in live orchestra for the silent films in Lucknow.

27. मोरे सैंया जी उतरेंगे पार हो नदिया धीरे बहो by Lata Mangeshkar and chorus from Udan Khatola (1955), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni, music Naushad

Now my next chorus song is from the film Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje (1955). This is all colour film and right from the title song the colours are blown all over the screen if not on the audience. This film is wrongly patriotic as the Indian dances are better and spiritually on the higher plane than the corrupting Western ballroom or Latin cabaret type dances. Kathak was the main theme and Gopi Krishna, a great exponent of the Kathak, was the choreographer and hero of the film. Shantaram chose Sandhya, his third wife, as the heroine of this colourful film. Sandhya was not a dancer, nor so much an actor either, but it was pride and ego of Shantaram that he could extract best performance from any naive person or a wooden block.

This film made an end of Black and White films era in the Bollywood. Shantaram’s confidence, Sandhya’s dedication and Gopi Krishna’s exceptional dance led this film to win several awards in India and wide acclaim abroad.

28. मुरली मनोहर कृष्ण कन्हैया जमुना के तट पे विराजे हैं by Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar and chorus from Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), lyrics Diwan Sharar, music Vasant Desai

My next song choice is from the film Naya Daur that became famous for a very unseal theme of building a road and tonga race, and patriotic pride of the Indian country etc. The story was by BR.Chopra who was famous for unusual stories and directed it as well. Earlier this picture had Madhubala as heroine and Dilip Kumar as the hero, but Madhubala’s father did not want a son of fruit seller, Dilip Kumar, hobnobbing with his daughter who was born in a shanty town of Chandani Chouk of Old Delhi that once Sanjay Gandhi tried to clear with force. Attaulla Khan had Dickensian ‘Great Expectations’ for his daughter apart from his main earning from her for the upkeep of his other daughters and his own luxuries. The affair of Dilip aka Yusuf Khan and Madhubala was mentioned in the Girgaon Court when BR.Chopra took Madhubala’s father to the court for breaking the contract of his daughter. The film also became popular for OP Nayyar’s melodious songs and music with his Punjabi stomping beat. It gave a riot of happiness to the fifties’ audience and still creates waves of joy in the fans of OP.

29. ये देश है वीर जवानों का अलबेलों का मस्तानों का by Mohammad Rafi and chorus from Naya Daur (1957), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music OP Nayyar

My last stop is at Tumsa Nahin Dekha. So this long journey into the ‘Chorus songs in the Hindi films’ comes to an end with delights of meeting OP Nayyar and Shammi Kapoor again with his new Yahoo image. All the credits go to the O.P.’s out of the world music and melodies. Really?

30. देखो क़सम से क़सम से कहते हैं तुमसे हाँ by Mohammad Rafi, Asha Bhosle and chorus from Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music OP Nayyar

(I didn’t see or hear any chorus in the song. But since it is such a nice song, and Shalan Lal has transcribed the lyrics with such great effort, I have retained the song. – AK)

31. सर पे टोपी लाल by Mohammad Rafi, Asha Bhosle and chorus fromTumsa Nahi Dekha (1957), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music OP Nayyar

clip_image048

Epilogue 1: From the studio-based musicians of the thirties to the all-round cinematic art musicians of the fifties, from the huge microphones and heavy recording equipments, and learning on the job as one goes into the recording of the songs, to the sophistication of purpose-built sound recording studios of the fifties, specially trained sound engineers, and film songs becoming almost stars in the films with stardust around them is a very long journey. Making music with non-sensual sounds like ‘Aha, Aha and ‘Lul Lul Laa!’ etc, the musicians along with the lyricists and “Adidappa” music directors accomplished to create lyrical and lilting melodies in the voices of angelic singers like Lata, Gita, Samshad, Asha, Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Dey. The almost heavenly music is an act far too superior to what happened in the Hollywood. Of course the Hollywood had advantage of more attractions, techniques, money and historically advanced European civilization behind them while India had to struggle out of the colonised effects and without the advantage of the renaissance and enlightenment of all round freedom. But Bollywood was now a real challenge to the Hollywood.

Here ends my loitering voyage into the Chorus songs in the Hindi films with the Third Decade (1951-60).

Readers are invited when to comment and post their chorus songs from the decade covered under the post and also beyond.

Epilogue 2
From the beginning of this Merry Month of May, Indian newspapers started flashing the news that RK children were going to sell the RK Studios. At first I thought another entrepreneur would come and buy it, keeping the RK legacy intact in the studio. But in a few days, news flashed in the newspapers that the RK Studios has been sold to the Godrej Properties.

The newspapers published pictures of the gate of the RK Studios, which was in a dilapidated state, and the RK emblem adapted from a scene in the film Barsaat (1949) was falling apart. But the newspapers also said that the Godrej Properties were planning to develop a luxury residential complex there. It is so sad, so hurtful, so ironical and so cruel that all the love of Raj Kapoor for the film art has come to this state.

Remember the scene from the film Shri 420 in the song, Pyar hua iqaraar hua…Main na rahungi, tum na rahoge phir bhi rahengi nishaaniyan, and a shot of Raj Kapoor’s little children walking hurriedly in the rain was seen. We loved that as we loved the song. It gives bitterness to my pen to say these were the Nishaaniyan-children who sold the RK Studios.

The Sanskrit words come to mind: “Kaalaya tasmai namah!” Time is the ultimate destroyer, hence I bow to it!

Shalanji
Thanks for the nice series. I was absent as usual these days and will comment in other parts also. For this one it seems you were in a hurry. You called the 50s golden era and yet only six chorus songs. I say six because I dont count the Naya Daur or the Tumsa Nahin Dekha songs among chorus songs. Tumsa Nahin Dekha songs have no chorus at all. The Naya Daur is mostly a Rafi solo because Balbir sings along Rafi only in the last antara where Dilip and Ajit sing together, otherwise Rafi is singing both for Dilip and Ajit earlier. Also there is mistake in the lyrics in the Naya Daur song. The last line of the first antara is

In this decade there were hundreds of good chorus songs. So the challenge is to find those songs which have some special impact. I would give here a few.
1 aa gup chup gup chup pyar karen – sazaa – 1951
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0o2D3XxBCg
This is a beautiful duet but the chorus enhances the effect immensely. Same is the case with the two solo chorus songs from Chori Chori
Us paar sajan is paar dhare – Lata
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xWepby-ioY
Panchhi banun udti phirun – Lata

BAIJU BAWRA,1952

Shakeel Badayuni, Naushad.

Tu Ganga ki mauj main Jamuna ka dhara
( Our Vyakaran discussion)…
Rafi,Lata & chorus.

Door koi gaaye dhun ye sunaye
Tere bin chaliya re
Baaje na muraliya re…
Shamshad Begum, Lata & chorus.( I am sure the uncredited male voice..O ji O.. can’t be anybody else than Rafi.)

NEW DELHI,1956.

Shailendra,SJ.

Nakhrewali Nakhrewali..
Dekhne mein dekh lo hai kaisi bholi bhali..
Kishore Kumar & chorus.

Tum sang Preet lagaayi Rasiya
Maine jaan ke Jaan gawayi Rasiya
…..Bedardi tere pyaar mein..
Lata & chorus.

One song from 1957 that deserved to be in the post is
Aye Malik tere bande hum…
The male chorus version .
DO AANKHEN BAARA HAATH,1957.

Bharat Vyas, Vasant Desai.

The movie also had:

Ho ummad ghummad kar aayee re ghata
Kaari kaari badra ki chhayi re ghata..
Manna Dey, Lata & chorus.

Taka taka dhum dhum
Taka taka dhum dhum…
Lata & chorus.

Fast forward to ( or cut to,in movie language) V Shantharam’s next film NAVRANG,1959.

I am always fascinated by how the titles start rolling ( Black and White) with the song..
Rang de re Rang de re
Jeevan ki chunariya Rang de re…
Manna Dey Asha Bhonsle & chorus.
Bharat Vyas,C Ramchandra….
Then V Shantharam appears on the screen wearing dark glasses to narrate his experience of almost loosing his eyesight during the bull fight sequence of DABH. He ,then , removes his glasses and tells us his eyes are alright and says when he was blindfolded during his treatment he could experience जीवन के हजारों रंग and is presenting a few of those in the new movie NAVRANG. With this, the last lines of the song continue, the screen going colour. Innovative!

Asides:
I must have seen NAVRANG for the first time in my school days, 70s.. and told my parents there should have been 9 colour filled pots instead of the 7 to match the 7 letters of the title! Of course, I was told not to act too smart!!

I watched it again during my Medical College days,80s, and thought MGR must have borrowed his later years look of dark glasses and the cap from V Shantharam! This time around,my friends agreed with me.

Bengaluru has a theatre NAVRANG, which is an important landmark and the whole area, the bus stop etc, are known by the name Navrang! Sadly, the iconic theatre,in existence from 1963, has been renovated recently. While most of the single screen theatres have been demolished to make way for Malls, this is really wonderful! The theatre had the unique distinction of exhibiting every single movie of Kannada Matinee Idol Rajkumar and his three sons,ShivRajkumar, Raghavendra Rajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar. The major road here is named as Dr Rajkumar road.

Sorry for the information overload!

INSAAN JAAG UTHA,1959.

PAIGHAM,1959 had half a dozen chorus songs.

Kavi Pradeep, C Ramchandra.

Insaan ka insaan se ho bhaichara
Yahi Paigham hamara….
Manna Dey & chorus.

Daulat ne paseene ko aaj laath hai maari
Hargij nahin rukhegi ab hartal hamari…
Chitalkar Ramchandra & chorus.

Hey suno re bhai hum laaye hain ek khabar masthani
Aaj kisi zalim ki marnewali hai Naani..
Rafi & chorus.

Main kyon naachoon aaj
Kaho ji mera jiya lehraya…
Asha Bhonsle & chorus.

O Ameeron ke Parameshwar
Hum gareebon ki bhi le le khabar..
Asha Bhonsle & chorus ( the Vyjayanthimala version)

Hum rang rangili jobanban ke thitthaliya
Hum Roop nagar ke hanste gaathe putthaliya..
Asha Bhonsle,Suman Kalyanpur & chorus.
( Thithliya, Puthiya have been stressed into Thitthaliya and Putthaliya, but sound cute.)

Of the Paigham songs lyrics of the last one is as below
‘hum rang rangili joban ban ki titkaliyan re

Ms. Shalan Lal ji;

Yes, for me days of thrills of radio and vinyl are back. In 50s , It was a luxury to own His Master’s Voice record player and play your favorite records …..and owning a Radiogram was an ultimate luxury. The clarity and sound it produced was ultimate !! One could hear rhythm and beats miles away as most of the time all the residents would listen to songs with full volume . so walking from Bus Station to your own house was never tiring.

I know when Shalan writes she can’t miss RK ‘s music and movies. For music ,Shankar Jaikishan fully justify the passion of Raj Kapoor , the captain of the ship….that sailed many waves. The Chorus was essential part of movies and songs . Ghar aaya mera pardesi is an ultimate of its capacity that one can not look beyond . In Dattaram’s own words ….this song took four days to record and that too in four phases ; each musically edited and threaded together to make that longest song recorded for RK. More than hundred strings and chorus singers were used to give shrieks and shrills effects of horror part . Over and above the picturisation , art direction and light and shade effects were superb. This Dream Sequence set an example for many to follow….some succeeded but many failed …..not coming to the standards laid down by RK.

SJ = RK , equation was an unparalleled one . Not only they brought modern music together to the front doors… they used film title as main theme in their songs ……and even Title music too.

Its a great pleasure for me to share some beautiful Title music where Chorus and highlighted instrument shares equal notes. Here is my first installment……

SJ were truly masters of Background music that enhanced the face values of the entire scenes. And so were their preludes and interludes. In the background additional melodies running parallel to the songs were their specialties. So good was this piece of Sangam song that RK repeated its prelude at the end of Kal Aaj aur Kal last scenes . Even Mera Naam Joker ‘s background music can be heard along with in the scene where Prithviraj retreat to retire on wheel chair after Randhir’s marriage . In totality many MDs of today’s generation needs to sit for long watching SJ and Naushad’s movies ….catch if they can.

Sangam – Ye Mera Prem Patra Padhkar Ke Tum – Mohd Rafi [ and Lata humming ] and chorus….

Ms. Shalan Lal ji;

As we all know RK maintained a music bank of SJ tunes which he reserved for himself to be used in his forthcoming film productions. Barsaat carried some tunes of Aah songs as background music. Similarly Aah carried some of Mera Naam Joker songs and Jis desh mein ganga behti hai [ O basanti etc] .

Here is one SJ’s background score [ in Chorus ] of Mera Naam Joker , which was used many years later in one of the RK’s films song composed by Ravindra Jain .

There are some very nice chorus songs from Pakistan during two of the periods considered. I wonder whether these too should be considered.

Hans ji,
I stand corrected. Thank you.
Listened again, after decades may be.
What do Thithkaliya and Putthkaliya mean? I thought Thitthaliya and Putthaliya were poetic/ musical licence for a South production!
How naive and stupid!

ANARI,1959.
SJ; Shailendra, Hasrath Jaipuri.

1956,1957,1958…1959…
Manna Dey,Lata & chorus.

Lata & chorus.

Arun Kumar Deshmukh ji,
3 more from BOOT POLISH:

1. Lapak jhapak tu aare badarwa…
Manna Dey & chorus.
2. Nanhe munhe bachhe teri mutti mein
kya hai…
Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle & chorus.

Saraswati Kumar Deepak?
Raat gayi, phir din aati hai
O raat gayi….

And, one from JAGRITI too. Probably the most famous Hindi movie song about Bapuji.

Kavi Pradeep, Hemant Kumar.
Asha Bhonsle & chorus.

De di hume azadi bina khadag bina dhal
Sabarmati ke Sant tune kar diya kamaal…

I always wonder what made Hemant Kumar to give away both Aao bachhon tumhe dikhaye jhankee Hindustan ki… and Hum laaye hain Toofan se bachhon sambhal ke to singers other than himself!

AK
Wonderful editing and presentation get up is on its own a feature of this three parts acclamation of Hindi songs under the façade of Chorus Songs.

I feel that SoY readers should note a lot of hard work has gone to post production of my thesis.

I have a mouthful praise for the AK’s all troubles.

So far most of the readers have shown bubbling enthusiasm and I especially praise Joseph who had been very shy so far not to indulge his memories of the songs has come out shared his items with all of us.

Ksbhatia deserves praise of making his memory about gramophone records alive in his word pictures.

Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh brought out the remembrances of Yatrik not being mentioned by me and I feel very guilty but now he has mentioned and I Feel relived.

Dr Shetty ‘s pen does not write in ink but a showers of songs as if they are just waiting there for him to put on the comment column.

Hansji has his point to make and I shall not debate for the time. being.

I am grateful to Gaddeswarup for mentioning Pakistani musicality and many of the songs of this period from Pakistan deserve some attention. But presently the relationship between India and Pakistan is not good and Indian are very sensitive people. But perhaps a separate post is needed when we feel happy about Pakistan.

I think Imrankhan is making some efforts.

I thank you all the SoY members for their contribution.

I do not know if there is any unwritten understanding about the format in which we have to post the songs here. In this digital age if we post the comments in a specific format it might be of help.
In any case , I feel we should all give the link to the songs posted here. It would help the readers to listen to the song.

I do not know of any software / App that could list out the songs as soon as it is posted here . Such a software could make it easy to scan through the list.

I have a doubt if these 2 songs posted here could be covered under the definition of ‘ Chorus ‘

‘ Ye Shahar bada Albela … ‘
and
‘ Haseen Chand Sitaaron…’

As the age of the topic increases , it becomes more difficult to post any songs as one has to scan all the earlier comments to avoid a repetition.

S Joseph,
I have not prescribed any format for posting comments, nor is it necessary or possible. All readers have been posting song links, except Dr Shetty, who it seems has not been able to figure out how to do it.

I don’t have a filter for repeat songs. Scrolling up and down does not take more than a few seconds. I wouldn’t worry too much if a song is repeated, though in my posts I try to avoid repetition.

S Joseph , AK ji;

Yes, without links half the pleasantry is lost if link is not there ; but the rare songs do deserve to be posted when links are not provided by the commentator . Here I will thank N Venkatraman ji who takes pains to provide comments along with posting of missed links. He goes into details with his stats and write up capacity….so also Hans ji ….a balance critic and cricketer !!

I had posted a bunch of flowers in fours yesterday and I will close SJ innings with a six ….and move over to other MDs superb melodies.

Shalanji,

Coming after a week of hiatus. A grand conclusion to the 3 part sequel which also happens to be the last post of the 9th year of SoY. Thanks for the fine write up and wonderful collection of Chorus songs.

A special word of appreciation for presenting Harmandir Singh Hamraz’s monumental effort in bringing out his six volumes of Hindi Film Geetkosh.

Your mention of special facilities for women in cinema halls in the early days of film screening in Bombay, makes me recollect a theater in my local neighbourhood which I had the privilege of visiting in my childhood. If I remember right the theater hall was “Rupayan”. And the entire upper tier and the balcony were reserved for Ladies. Children below 12 were allowed. The hall is no longer in existence, and now an automobile showroom occupies the place.

Let me turn my attention to the chorus songs you have posted. Your first song from Albela was a nice selection and as you have mentioned the film was the third highest grossing film of 1951. Albela was dubbed in Tamil in1953 as Nalla Pillai and the original tunes of Albela were retained in the Tamil dubbed version.

Here is another song from the film
The 23 seconds chorus singing is repeated at the three interludes at 1: 44, 2:21 and 4:05.

Shola jo bhadke dil mera dhadke
Shola jo bhadke dil mera dhadke
Dard jawani ka sataye badh badh ke

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkXVfGi7QVg

Glad to note that Bhatiaji and Pradeepji had stormed the post with an avalanche of songs. Arunji rarely posts songs. Nice to find him in his new role in the three posts of chorus songs. Thanks to Arunji for the nice songs. And Mr.Joseph too is another surprise contributor. Keep it up Mr.Joseph.

Will be back soon.
PS: was Amitabh Bachchan inspired by Bhagwan Dada’s dance style?

Haseeno ka bura ho jo hame barbad karte hain..

Also from Hemant Kumar:

‘Hariyaali sawan dhol bajaata aaya’ is a marvelous song. And I am pleased to find it occupying a pride of place in your selection. Salil Choudhury was a master of Mass songs, inspirational songs, choir songs chorus songs etc.etc.
The tune of this songs was a based on one of the earliest Bengali compositions (1944-also a chorus) of Salil Choudhury for IPTA. It was basically a rural folk song in two parts expressing the joy of sowing and harvesting by peasants of Bengal.

Actually, ‘Rickshawala’ was a short story written by Salil Choudhury himself, inspired by a Bengali poem, ‘Dui Bigha Jamin’, written by Rabindranath Thakur. According to Salil Choudhury his coming to Bombay was accidental. He was writing a script for a Bengali film based on his short story ‘Rickshawala’. Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who heard of it from Salil Chowdhury during a visit to Calcutta liked it immensely and suggested that he narrate it to Bimal Roy. Bimal Roy too liked it and asked him to meet him again the next morning. However, when Chowdhury went to meet him the next day, he learnt that Roy had rushed to Bombay on an urgent call. A week later, he received a telegram from Roy that he wanted to turn his script into a movie. Thus he debuted as the Music Director for a film based on a story scripted by him. Some say it was Riwik Ghatk who introduced Salil Choudhury to Bimal Roy.

I would like to add two more wonderful chorus songs from the said film.

Shalan ji:

I agree with the sentiments expressed by Hans ji @ 17. At the same time, ending the series in the 1950s appears premature.

Dr. Shetty @ 32; Gaddeswarup ji @ 29:

The song ‘Aao bachchon tumhen dikhaayen jhanki Hindustan ki’ (and other songs from Jagriti) had come for special coverage in:

https://www.songsofyore.com/aao-bachho-tumhein-dikhayen-jhanki-ki/#more-888

That post also had (now defunct) links to the Pakistani versions of these songs. I am posting here a fresh link to ‘Aao bachchon sair karayen tumko Pakistan ki’ from ‘Bedari’, MD: Fateh Ali Khan:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g5jFbpVg3o

The film and its songs were reportedly banned in Pakistan after people realized they had been plagiarized. But the original song continues to be a victim of politics even today. Here is one version in which the word ‘Padminiyan’ (@ 1:44) has been edited out!

N Venkatraman ji;

Glad you are back and thank you for your beautiful remembrance and information of the era to which the beautiful chorus songs belongs to . Yes , Do Bigha Zamin was such a movie that made a very powerful emotional impact on me . I was in a growing stage , learning and observing life to live . It was the story and performance of actors that made me realize the facts of life . It was a great deviation from the , otherwise glamour movies , that every one were after. Over and above…. Shailendra’s songs and Salil Chowdhury’s composition made an ever living memorial in my heart . The songs you have posted says it all and are my all time favorite . Again thanks for posting.

Salil Chowdhury was master of chorus songs . Like counter melodies he used ….counter chorus….in many of his songs. An example where Lata is leading counter chorus singing …Lataji’s voice in choir is really unmatched . Opera singing voice at its best .

Chorus songs of Shankar-Jaikishan should score high on the chart. Thus after Do Bigha Zamin, the three-part song from Aaawara was an apt choice. Fabulous back to back songs, with great chorus backing, choreography to picturisation , everything par excellence. The wide gap between poverty and opulence is depicted in a telling manner in this film. I cannot match Bhatiaji’s eloquence (especially when it comes to RK films and SJ’smusic) and your pin-pointed well-defined narratives.

Would have liked to post another less discussed chorus song from Aawar, Naiya Teri Manjhdha . But I find Bhatiaji, not surprisingly, had already posted it @ 28. I love this song and its picturisation. Thank you Bhatiaji.

I would leave SJ’s songs to Bhatiaji, after all it is his area. I will just sit back and listen to his postings at leisure.

After C Ramchandra, Salil Choudhury and Shanker-Jaikishan the next focal point is S D Burman or shoud I say Guru Dutt. Ok let us settle for both. In the song Pighala Hai Sona Dur Gagan Par , S D Burman’s use of chorus is soft but effective.

Shalan ji;

After my SJ venture I will be diverting my musical journey to a path that I would never leave ….Naushad Street. His songs and music was introduced by my elder brother who was passionate about Dilip Kumar Naushad combo. He would endlessly play Naushad’s songs on Harmonium….and songs included the title music and dance numbers too. As I progressively listened ….my involvement intensively grew more.

The orchestration standard of Naushad was an example for others to follow . A master of long preludes and interludes that he was for both Indian and Western classical songs . For me I would rate Baiju Bawara for Indian classical…and Jadoo for Western classical as his best .

I am now off to this great venture…

Entering the colour era of movies …..these were the ones which were shot in Gevacolor and 35 mm Technicolor prints were made in London color laboratory. The British people had a unique experience of listening to Naushad’s music in Aan movie and they made notations and preserved it as a reference . Aan was a craze in France too…and Nimmi made a difference . Her beauty attracted many …but some complained of her getting less footage than Nadira. It is learned that one dream sequence was later added to enhance Nimmi’s footage . Fardoon Irani’s first assignment of colour cinematography was very impressive.

One song from AMAR that escaped your careful scrutiny:
Udi udi chaye ghata jiya lehraye
Piya Piya hole hole Papihara gaaye..
Lata & chorus.

N Venkataraman ji,
Thanks as always for the links.

One thing I have observed about Venkataraman ji is that he rarely misses any item on the blog, even when his grand entry is late. He rarely repeats anyone’s post. When he mentions a post of someone,it is to add more details to the same. And,his contributions have solid background information. Keep it up, dear Venkataraman ji.
( In small WhatsApp groups of music loving school/ college friends,I am supposed to be a big expert. The ‘ go to man’ to clear any doubts about songs. But,in a forum full of highly knowledgeable contributors,I realise the limit of my so called ‘ vast’ knowledge. I enjoy every entry in the blog. I am sure all of you do so,too.

RAAHI,1952.

Anil Biswas.

1. Dashrath Lal
Ira Majumdar, An uncredited male voice & chorus.

Holi khele Nandlala Biraj mein..
A boisterous, energetic, feel good song and dance.
I find Ira Majumdar in only one more song…Maa ki kabhi na bhool.. from GUL SANOBAR,1953. Who was she?

2. Prem Dhawan.
Ek kali aur do patiya
Jaane hamare sab batiya..

The tea leaves picking song has two versions.
Lata, Meena Kapoor and chorus.
Lata Meena Kapoor, Hemant Kumar, uncredited male voice ( Anil Biswas?…zulm daale, situm daale portion towards the end)and chorus.

I came to know today that RAAHI was simultaneously made in English as THE WAYFARER. So, after all, for Dev Anand ,GUIDE has a precursor.
For the information of anyone not aware, the movie was based on Mulkraj Anand’s Two leaves and a bud.

Bhatiaji
SJ and RK team were very creative in the matter of chorus songs. There was a song ‘ek do teen, aaja mausam hai rangeen’ by Shamshad and chorus in Awara picturised in a crowded night club situation. Throughout the song the din and laughter of the people in the night club is played in a low voice along with background music. At one place the sound of this din is raised and the voice of the singer is suppressed to give a different effect. Hear it again.

So far as the perception about RK having any bank of SJ tunes, I dont believe in that. And I also do not believe that the music given in his films was his and not his MDs. He has, in circulating these storied violated the ethics of the profession. SJ, LP or Ravindra Jain have proved themselves in other films. SJ had this habit of using their ready tunes to be used in future as part of background tunes. If you watch SJ films you will see this pattern even in non-RK films. LP also used this pattern in their films.

68 Hans May 30, 2019 at 3:58 pm

Dr Shetty
Titkaliyan and putkaliyan are no specific words. They seem to be combination of titliyan + kaliyan and putliyan + kaliyan. I dont think south production houses interfered in the matter of hindi songs. These are some of the odd things you find in hindi songs. You must have heard this MM creation ‘kabhi ithlake chalte ho kabhi balkhake chalte ho’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjeXujSP2kI
The words ‘ithla ke and balkhake’ look perfectly ok when a male says them to a female. But when a female herself says these words they look odd, as in ‘ithlati aur balkhati kal phir aaungi sayonara’

Shalanji,
Your next station of landing was at an unknown island by way of Udan Khatola. The island may be unknown but Naushad and his films had become legendary by then. By the turn of the decade under discussion, Naushad was a veteran of 28 films and many jubilees to his credit. In the 50s he had composed music for another dozen films. And the song you have presented is definitely a great chorus song.

Naushad was very popular in the south and many of the films for which Naushad gave music like Udan Khatola, Naya Daur and Mugha-e-Azam were dubbed in Tamil. Vaanaratham was the Tamil version of Udan Khatola.

Here is the Tamil version of the song More saiyanji uterenge paar. The Tamil version too was rendered by Lata Mangeshkar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFHMUuw0NRw&feature=player_embedded

After your introduction and Bhatiaji’s passionate articulation (@59) on Naushad nothing more needs to be said. In keeping with his vow not to leave the Naushad Street, he has posted about a dozen and a half songs of Naushad. Pradeepji and Mr. Joseph must have contributed more than a dozen chorus songs of Naushad, although there are some repetitions.

I would like to present a dance number of Nimmi from Uran Khatola. It is not a song as such, but accompanied by orchestration and chorus.

I entirely agree with your observation about Venkatraman ji . He is gem of a person and has all the abilities to analyse the content of a song and linking it beautifully to the history it carries. As for yourself….your friends….and now we ….surely have find an expert whose mind works at lightning speed never missing the target .

75 Arunkumar Deshmukh May 30, 2019 at 9:46 pm

N Venkatraman ji @ 50

You have rightly observed that normally I refrain from posting songs here, in any post.
However, from the very First part of this series, I was pained to see that in the enthusiasm of posting songs, many duets were being posted.
A chorus is defined as ” A chorus is part of a song or poem that is repeated following each verse. The Chorus of a song or poem is the part where you repeat a verse or a phrase. There are various patterns of repeat. ”
Accordingly, atleast the 50% portion of the song must be sung by a group of singers, which does not happen in a duet or a Trioka.
In Hindi films, there are many such songs which are exclusively sung as chorus. To find them and post here, needs lot of search and a memory for past films.
I thought that I would post songs like one from Padosi, Anand math or Andolan etc, which have a major portion of the song sung by a group.
In my opinion, true Chorus songs are a real delight to listen to. I wish more of such chorus songs are posted here, otherwise the very soul of this series is lost.

Thanks.

In the original vinyl records the background sound of the crowd making various noises were not there. The chorus words ….paap re…of course were in place. There were some issues with the wordings of the songs to which Raj Kapoor resorted to self censorship [ or is it from censor board] to dim out those words by increasing the volume of the crowds in the den . The objectionable wordings were….Doob ke is gehraai mein
Dekh ke kitna paani hai…..The crowd voices made a big difference and song got thru without any cut .

Ek Do Teen – Raj Kapoor – Awaara – – Shamshad Begum – Shankar Jaikishan

watch those wordings that got nearly muted by voices @ 1.28 to 1.38

For second para I will come back with some examples.

Venkatraman ji;

Guru Dutt’s Jaal was one of my favorite film during VHS days. The film had entirely a different flavor . Its execution , its leisure pace , superb goan based melodies. Yes itwas filmed entirely in Goa before it was liberated . The story was based on gold smuggling and the song ….peegla hai sona…says it all. Other songs….maria maria…and ….chori chori meri gali ….carries the carnival charms of those days . SDB excelled in this movie too.

SDB in many of his movies used chorus effects very passionately. One song that I repeatedly listen to is from Devdas ……

Hey baadal pe maadal baaje
Hey daso dishayen garje

Kavi Pradeep seems to have sung about 30 songs for Hindi movies . He sang three songs in his debut movie KANGAN,1939. His last movie as a singer appears to be AANKH KA TAARA,1977. All but 3 of his songs were written by himself. In KANGAN ,he sang 2 Kabir works and in RAM BHAKTH VIBHISHAN,1958,he sang the lyrics of Saraswati Kumar Deepak.

In AMAR RAHE YE PYAR,1961, surprisingly,he was the sole male voice. For C Ramchandra, in this movie,he sang 3 solos and 2 duets ( one each with Asha Bhonsle and Suman Kalyanpur).
The total number of his duets seems to be 4: 1 each with Leela Chitnis and Suman Kalyanpur 2 with Asha Bhonsle.

The composers he worked with:
Saraswati Devi
Ramchandra Pal
Anil Biswas
Avinash Vyas
Vasant Desai
S N Tripathi
C Ramchandra
C Arjun
ShivaRam
Chitragupt
N Dutta
Hemant Kumar
LP
Ajith Merchant

Arun Kumar Deshmukh ji @ 75;

Long chorus songs ….catchy , popular or unique…are really fine . A great chorus is like a great take-off ….and that little bit in the song makes you sing or cry as you fasten your belts. Never parting with chorus melody , you still want to move the needle over a broken record …..scratching the same chords over and over ; again and again to get maximum out of it.

Chorus music / songs , short or long , can be a wonderful thing. The right song can instantly put you in a pleasant mood and serve as an uplifting spirit. Mammoth chorus sometimes do tend to make a dying statement . For good times any one that make your senses good are the best one. For me listening to church organ pipe music is best choral effects even when in your own place.

Here are a few songs which are having a little larger time-age than the worded span of songs…..

Ms. Shalan Lal ji;

Jhanak jhanak Payal Baaje was really master class touch of V Shantaram . Music was always his priority to look for to be best . His earlier movies have testified his fantastic approach to musical side of the department…… besides art and set directions . A song that always please me for a long time is …..Nain so Nain nahin milao…… . For this song pleasantry exceeds happiness in deed .

nain so nain nahi milao..with enhanced version ..
Film : Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje,1955,
Singers : Lata Mangeshkar,Hemant Kumar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFK4hAfjYTA

I simply loved enhanced version….just like sitting in a cinema hall with perfect dolby system . I think this song is one of the most romantic chorus song of Lata and Hemant Kumar….both born with golden voice . The lyrics and composition are a cool and a collector’s choice . Everybody to close eyes and get swayed by its soothing flow of orchestra . Credit goes to chorus singers for their perfect background singing and modulation of rhythm with high and low pitches….a perfect support system.

Hansaji @17 & Canassyaji @54

Hansaji raised the dis-satisfaction @ 17 at seeing only six songs presented in the part three of the Chorus songs. This view was also supported by Canasya @54 with his saying “I agree with the sentiments expressed by Hans ji @ 17. At the same time, ending the series in the 1950s appears premature.

So I write down my point of view.
The background was that I went on listening songs both Indian films songs and Western songs from 18 years on. Sometimes I made notes which is my habit and put them in an envelope as the thoughts came to my mind I added them on.

Sometimes I went in to the British library and looked into the music sections to find explanations to my issues about music and this habit is with me now as well.

So when I started writing about it, it became a paper, a researched kind of work, AK called it thesis. By illustrating with pictures from many cultures I made it universal in part one.

Part one tells it all about it and also explains what is a Chorus song.

The part one also has songs from thirties decade and foundation of film musicality of the Hindi Cinema.

The forties decade shows that the musicality started liberating itself from the Studio based songs in the thirties.

Then I came to the fifties.

This became by common knowledge as the Golden Era of music in the Hindi cinema.

I explained how it became so important by giving out the monumental work of Harmandir Singh “Hamaraj”. Because the fifties songs created a curiosity in him to find out more about the songs when the songs were alive on Radio and records but everything else were forgotten about them.

His work is the foundation of all the blogs on the Internet that talk about the Indian film music.

As you will see that the SoY readers could not join in huge number and giving their favorites songs of thirties or forties as they are to date not many are much concerned about the thirties or forties.

Now you see a Niagara fall of waters from the fifties songs coming from so many people. I had anticipated this and let the Soy members have a field for their expressions.

So for me more song putting in the part three was not important but making the points showing how different Musical directed created different music under the directors of the films and their subjects.

If you are just interested the number all you have to look at the songs mentioned by ksbhatia, Dr.Pradeepkumar, and latest new comer Joseph along with N.Venkatraman and others.

But they have also mentioned the various points about the song culture and film culture and many other points as well and this is what needed in the blog. There are other blogs on the internet they to are doing some good work in the songs cultures.

Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukhji had said,”

@ comment number 2
“For this part of the series, there wont be any shortages.
Let us start from the early 50s.”

I hope this may give you some satisfaction and I hope Canasya too will share it.

Hans ji;

Yourself ; and some of our friends of our age, must have played with that unique toy…Yo Yo ….that was a craze during early 50s .

To be precise , in 1951 …we as family…. went on our summer vacation to hill station Mussoorie . We all brothers and sisters were the young brigade that used to walk up and down the Mall Road for venturing on three counts….1. Movies at Rivoli and Regal , beautiful wooden based cinema halls that had beautiful Directors folding canvas flexible seats and back chairs to sit upon ….2. Toys available at various shops [ all yearning to have Yo Yo ]……3. Pastries and cakes of branch shop Wenger of CP , New Delhi.

During our stay of ten days , we happened to see three movies ….Pardes , Deedar and Aaram . We enjoyed a lot watching these movies as they all were fully loaded with best of star cast and music . To our surprise Aaram had a beautiful comic song featuring Yo Yo sung and played by Manmohan Krishan …. that we never knew about him then….but watching him know brings many memories back to the foreground .

Here is that song and watch Manmohan Krishna in a Frank Sinarta look [ his signature hat]….directly landing from Chicago.

Just an add on…..the interlude of YO YO song reminds me of two tunes . 1. He is a jolly good fellow [ very appropriate for character played by Manmohan Krishna ] …and …2. a long lost children song we used to hear when we all were kids and so also the little stars of this song .

Shalanji,
The Last four songs of your post are excellent composition by master composers and are indeed a delight to listen. But can we really regard them as chorus song. I doubt. I am not trying to pick holes in your selection. I am just sharing my frank observation on these songs here.

The song ‘ Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje’ starts with ‘Bols’ picturised on the character Mangal Maharaj (Keshavrao Date). I am not sure who recites the standard ‘Bols’ and ‘Kavitt Bols’, may be Chaubey Maharaj, maternal uncle of Gopi Krishna or by Gopi Krishna himself. Definitely not by Ustad Amir Khan as mentioned in some uploads. At 2:32 Manna Dey comes in and Lata Mangeshkar follows at 3:07 and again at 3:41 the ‘Bols’ continue to culminate with ‘Tehais’, a grand exhibition of Kathak dancing by Gopi Krishna and Sandhya. I believe Sandhya underwent intensive instruction in classical dance from co-star Gopi Krishna for the role. In the entire 5 minutes+ there is ‘roughly one minute of singing by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar. The major part of the dancing is to the accompaniment of ‘Bols’. I did not find any chorus singing or ‘Samaveta’ recitation of’ Bols’.

Bhatiaji has posted the song ‘Nain so nain nahi milao’- beautiful rendition, great orchestration and grand harmonization.

I would present two songs from the same film which, in my opinion, would also qualify as Chorus songs.

The Title song Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje by Ustad Amir Khan & Chorus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=3rmG6WjgWXA

Rang rang ki chunri by Md.Rafi, Asha Bhosle & Chorus
Initially I thought that this song was excluded from the film. But one of the comments gives a different tale.

“I have seen it myself, long years ago. However, as it happens frequently, it has been excluded from DVDs, which is a pity because this was one of the most picturesque and colorful songs photographed. It is a dhobi song that was shot on a riverbank. We thank our good fortune that somebody still has the 78 rpm and has uploaded it. ~Kersi N. Mistry

Shalanji,
In continuation….
In the link you have provided for the song ‘Ye Desh hai veer Jawanon ka’, only for a second (@ 2:41) the group dancers lend their voice in an exuberant response.

I think you have selected the wrong link. In the link provided by you, the song is followed by a wonderful display of dancing by Vaijayntimala. Actually this scene is at the fag end of the movie.

Actually the entire song sequence is in three parts. Ten minutes into the movie, we can hear the song ‘Dil Leke Daga Denge Yaar Hai Matlab Ke’, a solo by Md.Rafi, lip-synched by both Dilip Kumar & Ajit. As soon as the song ends, we can see AJit getting on to the Tonga driven by Dilip Kumar and leaves for the village and the scene shift to the village- the first part of the sequence under discussion begins. The entire sequence along with the song, ‘Ye Desh hai veer Jawanon ka’, is a wonderful display of revelry – energetic dancing, acrobatics and rhythmic and enthusiastic flaunting of their vocal chords- no chorus singing anywhere. We may pass it off as chorus for its energetic dancing and vocal support by the villagers.

I could not find a link to the entire three part sequence. Hence I had to clip it from the movie available online. I have uploaded the clipped-link in YT. I hope it is not removed citing copyright violation. Enjoy the song as long as it is available. Here is the link

Shalnji,
Continuing further……..

AK ji has shared his view of the song, Dekho Kasam Se Kahate Hain Tum Se, in his footnote. In Hansji’s opinion (@17) the last three songs are not chorus songs. Arunji (@75) expressing similar opinion, although without referring to any particular song/ songs posted, says that at least 50% portion of the song must be sung by a group of singers. Each of us has our perception as to what a Chorus song should be like, and you too must be having your own. In reply to Hansji’s comment, you replied that he has his point to make and you shall not debate for the time being. Fair enough. I would rest the matter here.

Pradeepji has mentioned the song ‘Saathi haath badana” @ 14 and a couple more chorus songs of O P Nayyar from Baaz @ 66.

Canasya @54
Thanks for pointing out this ‘padminiyan’ editing. I never noticed that because the song which I have has this word in it. I think there is a lot of hypocrisy in our country. It appears this a recent development. During the controversy about film ‘padmavati’ some anchors on TV even questioned the existence of Rani Padmini. I visited Chittorgarh fort in 1991 which has her palace also. I saw the room where an old mirror was there about which the legend says that Allaudin saw her image through that mirror. The ‘jauhar sthal’ also had the epitaph about the incident of jauhar. I dont know those descriptions are still there or have been sacrificed at the altar of our country’s hypocrisy.

95 Hans June 1, 2019 at 10:05 pm

Bhatiaji @76
I dont know about the truth of the wordings of this song being under a cloud of censor, because RK had this habit of circulating controversial stories to enhance the appeal and box office value of his films. These wordings are in fact philosophical. There is a kabir doha ‘jin khoja tin paiya gehre paani paith’. Also in that era there were much more offensive songs which were not noticed. For an example I would post a song from Ustad Pedro (1951) which is also partly a chorus song. ‘Dil ka ye engine seetiyan mare’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzCHVeMJDuU

At the time of release of Bobby Raj Kapoor circulated a story about the first scene – when Rishi meets Dimple and she comes with besan on her hands – that this scene is based on the first meeting between RK and Nargis. It was also said at that time, that Dimple is in fact their illegitimate daughter. Even RK’s ‘aulad’ is following him, they are now saying that their family’s ‘ijjat’ faced irreparable damage due to these stories. This is the best example of ‘ulta chor kotwal ko dante’.

96 Canasya June 1, 2019 at 11:34 pm

97 ksbhatia June 1, 2019 at 11:55 pm

Hans ji @95;

Yes , I am surprised by the wordings of Ustad Pedro song , that too coming from the pen of Raza Mehndi ali Khan and sung by Lata and C . Ramchandra. Tricks of the Trade factor always pays…as they say.

I think Raj Kapoor could influence more after the international recognition of his hit film Awara. Connections with higher ups made his films getting thru censors is well known . The famous examples are the three four scenes of Mera Naam Joker [ Simi, Padmini and Russian heroin ] followed by Satyam Shivam Sundram and few more. After the debacle of MNJ , as you must be knowing film Bobby was released in Haryana a week ahead of its release in Delhi …..creating a sort of fear that the famous song ….Hum tum ek kamre….is going under censorship’s scissors and may not see its daylight in delhi . This made all crazy fans gate crashing to faridabad cinemas and found nothing in its content that could hold the song of any obscenity . But Dimple factor too added to the success of Bobby . So some time success do overcome fears too. But recall Barsaat was released with A certificate ….just for its story line !…and then it was a big box office hit of that time.

Prithviraj Kapoor status and his presence as nominated member of Rajya Sabha during 1952-60 could be the additional factor of getting thru the controversial scenes .

For that Ek Do Teen song from Awara , I remember to have heard the song on 78 rpm record that was without noises . I am not able to locate that version on YT . At all other places it is just a copy paste of the celluloid print .

Mr. Joseph,
A big thanks and Kudos for posting a large number of Chorus songs. You have mostly confined yourself to Shalanji’s list of MDs, with an marked inclination towards Shankar-Jaikishan and Naushad. The only exception being the iconic Qawwali ‘Humein To Loot Liya Milke Husn Vaalon Ne’ by Ismail Azad Qawwal and his group from Al Hilal ( 1958-MD Bulo C Rani).

I enjoyed listening to the songs of Singapore. I have listened to the songs some time back that too once or twice and forgotten about it. Thank you for reviving my memories.

You have posted the song ‘Ye Shahar bada Albela’ @ 39 and expressed doubts (@ 45) as to whether the song can be covered under the definition of chorus. To my ears it appears to be a chorus song but the other song ‘Haseen Chand Sitaaron’ is not a chorus.

The two songs from Madhumati also made good listening and revived memories of another film for which Salil Choudhury composed music.
‘Jagte Raho’ was produced by Raj Kapoor and released in 1956. A Bengali version of the film ‘Ek Din Raatre’ was also released in the same year with Raj Kapoor in the lead role. I would like to present two superb chorus songs from this film.

Aiven duniya deve duhayi, jhutha panvadi shor,
Apne dil te puchh ke dekho kaun nahi hai chor
Teki Main Jhuth Bolaya, Koi Na
Teki Main Jhuth Bolaya, Koi Na

The song was retained in the Bengali version too.

Jaago Mohan Pyaare by Lata Mangeshkar & Chorus

This song too was retained in the Bengali version with some change in the lyrics.

Thank you Venkatraman ji for the two good songs from ‘ Jaagte Raho ‘, bringing back good memories of old. I remember this song ‘ O aiven duniya deve duhai … ‘ which my ‘Jat Sardar ‘ friends would sing sometimes and I too would join them but their dancing I could not match . So much fun . But this song is in pure Punjabi though in a Hindi movie .

I feel that perhaps this group can supplement our interactions with a parallel WhatsApp group for the members here . Some features are better in WhatsApp . Also presently there is no possibility of our interaction at individual level in this SOY group as I do not know any individual contact details. I do not even know if any of the members live in my City.

Bobby was first released in Rohtak in Shiela theatre. We had gone there to play a friendly match before the start of university matches. As you know these matches provided us opportunity to watch movies. After the match we went directly to the cinema halls. Seven of us went for Bobby which was released on that day itself without much fanfare. Other members of our team went watch Abhiman which was running in a nearby cinema. They planned to watch Bobby in the night show. First two shows of Bobby were normal, but in the third there was a long queue well before the windows opened. There were rumours that not more than two tickets would be given to each so five of us got in the queue. All 5 of us got 4 tickets each. We sold the spare tickets at double rates. When we came out there were spiralling queues in the whole compound outside the main building. Police had also been called. Other members of the team were watching helplessly. They did not let us go to Abhiman. So we treated them with Samosa-chutney from money we had earned.

From the next day onwards it became almost impossible for the locals to get tickets as people from Delhi and even Chandigarh started coming. RK got the stories of young couples enacting the bike scene from the film and meeting with accidents. Some of the stories may be true because at that time Delhi-Rohtak road was a single road. The film was soon turned into a craze. So far as I remember the film was released in other parts of the country about two months later. In between there was also a story that Rajesh Khanna had sued RK to stop release of the film.

Many readers may not be very comfortable in sharing their contact details publicly. WhatsApp is a great medium for instant communication within a group, but very poor for any serious discussion. You post something for a serious discussion, but it may be overtaken within minutes by silly jokes, forwards, RaGa, NAMO stuff. But off-line I would be very happy to facilitate discussion among members. I have written a mail to you.

Cricket and Cinema are a big link ups ….of the likes of heroins and cricketers. After playing 50 overs each side innings it was a great resting opportunity to cool our sweat bodies in air conditioned cinema hall and be treated with entertainment . I saw Upkar after I I T Delhi vs Delhi University match and while in Kanpur saw An Evening In Paris …after I I T Delhi vs I I T Kanpur match.

Thanks for the additional information of Bobby film and connected history .

Rajdoot mini motorcycle made it big ….. in the film ‘Bobby’. The bike featured was a Rajdoot GTS, which was sold as Bobby, had a very small frame and wheels, both just big enough to give Vespa 100 c c a good competition. The pocket rocket of a bike had the same 175cc two-stroke engine of the full size Rajdoots , and Bobby Bike reached a cult status with the youth . Yes , youth made a good group of the likes of….. Easy Riders…….popular in the west during that time.

Coming back to chorus songs . To me I rate ….Ajeeb dastan hai yeh…..as a top reference song for any one to study it deeply. Every instrument in the orchestra is worth weighing in gold. Lata’s voice at various high and low notes are amazing. Over and above every interlude differently composed…. highlighted by …Trumpet , Harmonica , Saxofone etc …and ofcourse Guitar being played as good as sailing of boat. The chorus singers made the song as additional counter melody.

It is surprising after 50 years of its release a music band made an English version of this song ….that is quite good to listen to …..

Venkataramanji
This Jagte raho song is my favourite. As Joseph ji pointed out it is a panjabi song. Raj Kapoor excelled himself in acting in this film and particularly in this song he is in the get up of a sardar and still does not understand the song and still has to show he understands. He has played the conflicting emotions exceptionally well. The lyrics of the mukhda are given below.

In the context of our vyakaran discussions it may be relevant to note here that Rafi pronounces jhootha as झूठा, but pronounces jhooth as झूट.

Thank you for nice appreciative words.

Bhatiaji & Pradeep ji together have posted a large number of songs almost 150. Bhatia ji’s contribution is little more. But Pradeepji’s has a greater spread; he has space even for lesser known MD Shailesh Mukherjee. Thank You Bhatiaji & Pradeep ji for your efforts.
I think nobody has posted songs of Gyan Dutt till now. Here is one

Gul-e-Bakawali (1956) is a dubbed version of the Tamil film by the same name. The song starts at 0:20

N Venkataraman ji;

Humdard song…Jab Ankhe Hi Na Di Malik Ne by Manna Dey….is a superb song ….listened to it after a long time. The song reminds me of another such song….Falak Bola Khuda Ke Noor Ka Mein – Mohammed Rafi – from KHUDA KA BANDA [1953] . In this Rafi gave playback for two singers …..like a selfie duet . There is a chorus song in this movie which was quite popular during mid 50s. And the song is…..

Falak Bola Khuda Ke Noor Ka Mein – Mohammed Rafi – KHUDA KA BANDA….S N Tripathi

Another song that followed the popularity chart in early 60s was…….

Canasyaji @ 96,
I am glad that you liked the three-part song from Naya Daur. Also happy to note that it is still there in YT.
Thanks for posting the comic song ‘Dumbak dumba’. I do not remember hearing it before.

Regarding the colourization of films, let me share the information that I have gathered.

The idea of film colourization in India started in the early millennium where technicians would add color to the black and white shades or monochrome pictures. They probably thought that the colourisation with enhanced picture quality and dolby sound will help the younger generation to take trip into the past and flock the multiplexes. But the venture was not a commercial success. Only a handful of them could find a re-releases in the multiplexes over the last two decade or so. The first colourised re-release was K. Asif’s magnum opus romance Mughal-E-Azam in 2004. The movie when released in 1960 already had some songs and scenes picturised in color. Chori Chori, Naya Daur, Mughal-e-Azam, Hum Dono, Dil Tera Deewana, Half Ticket, Aan, Shree 420 were some of the films that were colourised. Black-white moVies had a charm of their own and colorization doesn’t go well with old timer like me. Actually the films weren’t black and white, but actually, greyscaled; all objects in the films reflected a certain shade of grey.

I believe colourisation of films actually began around 1897 in a colouring lab in Paris. The colourization method was initially hand done by individuals. The employees literally painted every object in every frame one color at a time. They formed an assembly line in which each colourist was assigned a single tone, filling particular parts of each frame before passing the film to the next employee. Some areas were so minute that the employees resorted to brushes with a single hair.

Elisabeth Thuillier was a French colourist who excelled at coloring facets of magic lanterns and other kinds of photographic work. Elisabeth and her workforce of 200 employees – all women – were often hired by French filmmaker George Melies to colour his films. This was, of course, a remarkably time-consuming process. Colourization by hand was done as late as the 1920s, but it was seldom used to create entire films, such as The Last Days of Pompeii. These inefficient methods soon saw themselves fall out of fashion as computerized colourization technologies were introduced.

The computer technology was invented by former NASA engineer Wilson Markle after he was assigned to colour monochrome footage of the Apollo missions to the moon. The technique required a digitized copy of the film’s best monochrome print. Again, the range of grey levels is central to the transmutation. This time, the shades are assigned by the complex software. The objects are divided into infinitesimal indivisible areas known as pixels. The technician then colours every pixel. Our eye then perceives, or rather, blurs the pixels into a continuous image.

Time for a couple of songs….two different moods…. One a prayer and the other a comical song.

Allaah Tero Naam, Iishvar Tero Naam by Lata Mangeshkar & chorus, film Hum Dono (1961), lyrics Sahir Ludhyanvi, music Jaidev

Hans ji , Dr. Shetty ji , N Venkatraman ji;

A little music, a little poetry, and watching fine documented picture every day…keeps worries away . Make today worth living listening to deep meaning songs and ….. Embrace your blessings. Walk your talk . Dance and sing to your music …..Fast numbers with leather soles and soft ones with crepe soles… Yes soles and souls do get together and make a nice cool music . Remember the tapping and splashing of rain water by Gene Kelly in leather shoes….. singing in the rain ? . ….and crepe sole shoes of Guru dutt in soft melody….Hum aapki aankhoan mein …in Pyaasa ? .

Those were the days when you get swayed with Music to the soul ….and if putting up the right shoes handsome and beautiful comments surely follows from every way .

In 50s and 60s crepe sole shoes were very popular . We in the family were crazy to buy such shoes from Bata store in CP. For few days we avoided wearing them so that they don’t get dirty . We used to keep them under our cots , right below the pillow…as the pairs smells great !! Later on we found the thinner version of crepe leather was also used …..as inner lining in Ladies purses….. and in hand bags too.

The fashion and music do have positive relations and a song from Anari says it all. In current cat walk parades music in background has to be there to watch and match the foot steps .

Over to some more chorus songs …..this time a x section of my favorite MD …Salil Chowdhry . He made a deep impression on me with his Do Bigha Zamin songs and since then I am out for look out of his amazing compositions . Some time less traveled roads brings amazing surprises of the radio days .

N.Venkatraman @ 50

Your memory about the film theatre of childhood is very interesting. Many theatres in Bombay also had Zananaa section and the queue for women to get the tickets had the separate windows. They also had separate sitting sections reserved for them. I think it was a very good arrangement. The males were always excitable and would make noises during the screening of the film or showing of the commercials and gesticulating at the ladies audiences.

This is because males and females were brought up in the families, schools and in general life in India very separately.

In the west it is very different as males are used to female company in schools, colleges and offices, trains etc.

But the arrival of the immigrants from the former colonies is forcing some changes in the present social situation. Many women travelling in the rush hours trains to work have complained that their bottoms were pinched and so they made the demands that there should be the separate compartments for women.

Thanks for your contribution about the old time film theatres.

@ 52 you have provided very wonderful information about Salil Chaudhari’s art of Chorus Songs “. Salil Choudhury was a master of Mass songs, inspirational songs, choir songs chorus songs etc. etc.”

The tune of this songs was a based on one of the earliest Bengali compositions (1944-also a chorus) of Salil Choudhury for IPTA. It was basically a rural folk song in two parts expressing the joy of sowing and harvesting by peasants of Bengal.”

Thank you very much for the information about “Rikshwala”.

Salil also wrote the story of “Madhumati” and gave music to it.

He came to London some twenty years back with his wife and daughter and did the concert of his songs. His wife and daughters sang his songs from the films along with him in chorus and separately. I went and saw it and heard. His daughter had good singings voice as well. I wonder if she did any progress anywhere in the film world.

Shalan Lal

Today I read in the Indian News papers Ruma Guha, Kishore Kumar’s first wife died. She was a good singer and sang songs mainly in Bengali films. Perhaps you know more about it and could do a tribute to her.

P.S.:The information @ 53 is also very good. Also comments or rather commentaries @ 67,68, 69 are well written as well.

Ksbhatia @ 62 you SJ sojourn is very good and Naushad stopover is very much deep as well. Both were giants in their art.

Chorus has been defined twice in this series .

First time …
‘ Songs with more than one voice to a part singing in polyphony or harmony are considered ‘choral works’. ‘

Second time …
” A chorus is part of a song or poem that is repeated following each verse. The Chorus of a song or poem is the part where you repeat a verse or a phrase. There are various patterns of repeat. ”

Further it was mentioned here that…

Accordingly, atleast the 50% portion of the song must be sung by a group of singers…

Though substantially same, the second definition above is more restricting. But the final definition is yet to come . Let the definition remain open .

I doubt if this song from
‘ Dhool ka phool ‘ 1959 can be called a chorus.

Shalanji @ 113,
Thank you for your response and words of appreciation. Coming from a veteran academic is really heartwarming.
A minor correction. As far my knowledge goes Ritwick Ghatak was the story writer of “Madhumati’.

‘His (Salil Choudhury) daughter had good singings voice as well. I wonder if she did any progress anywhere in the film world.’

Yes she did lend for voice for some Hindi and Bengali films and television serials too. But she his more busy with running the Salil Chowdhury Foundation of Music Trust, which aims to preserve3 her father’s legacy. She also runs a music school called ‘Surodhwani’.

‘Today I read in the Indian News papers Ruma Guha, Kishore Kumar’s first wife died. She was a good singer and sang songs mainly in Bengali films. Perhaps you know more about it and could do a tribute to her.’

She deserves a fitting tribute. I have enough material to write about her, but very few songs of her are available and are not enough to do a post on her.

I am presenting a song from Heeramoti (1959). The Music director of this film is actually Roshan. During the shooting of the film and just before the song recording Roshan, who was on a cultural mission to Russia was taken ill. He sent a telegram to the director Krishan Chopra to request Salil Chowdhury to compose the Title music and the opening song. This information was authenticated later by Salilda in a Doordarshan interview and also by Lata Mangeshkar in another interview.

Shalan Lal ji,
Antara Chowdhury’s foray into the film music must have been with the 1977 Kannada movie CHINNA NINNA MUDDADUVE A 7 year old,she sang two duets brilliantly with stalwarts S Janaki ( Jo jo laali naa haaduve Chinna Ninna Muddaduve…a lullaby, the title song, which has a Jesudas solo version, too) and S P Balasubramaniam ( Dehake usire sadaa bhaara illa aadhara..).
Music: Salil Chowdhury.

The movie was remade in the same year in Hindi as MINOO. Antara sang one solo…
O Kaali re Kaali re
Tu toh kaali kaali hai
Chota sa ek bhaiya
Maa ab laanewali hai
Laanewali hai…,
And two duets:
Dheere dheere haule re
Nindiya Rani bole re…( With Asha Bhonsle)
Teri galiyon mein hum aaye
Dil ye armanon bhare laaye..
Lyrics: Yogesh.

She sang a few more songs as a child singer, for Salil Chowdhury, and, one movie each with RDB (KAALIA, Jab se tumko dekha dekha hi karte hain…LOVE.. with Kishore Kumar,Asha Bhonsle and Usha Rege), Prem Dhawan and Sapan Jagmohan.
We see her later in OH DARLING YE HAI INDIA,1995. Her duet with Sonu Nigam in KHOYA KHOYA CHAND, 2007( Ye nigahen nigahen nigahen jhuki jhuki… Shantanu Moitra) was notable.
I am sure she must be doing much better in Bengali. I know she has sung for many non film children’s songs albums .Venkataraman ji will definitely fill us in about the same. I remember reading that she runs a Music School.

BTW, even Sabita Chowdhury’s Hindi songs number is not very big,I think.

Thank you very much for your good information.

As per “She deserves a fitting tribute. I have enough material to write about her, but very few songs of her are available and are not enough to do a post on her. ” from the comment @ 116 I am very glad that Venkatramnji you have got enough material for to do her tribute then you should go with it. Does not matter if the songs number is small with you. Some other may contribute. Besides a tribute to a great lady is worth even it is small.

I think she did musical pieces for Satyjit Roy as well. This is a very good reason to do the tribute.

The information about the Madhmati Story came from Salil himself when I was talking to him after his concert. I was going to see him again but during that time there was a heavy snowfall and he lived on the other side of London and I did not dare to get my car snow bound at that time. But now I regret about my decision. Salil gave me an impression of unassuming and friendly person and nothing about filminess. He did not ware those awful white sharkskin clothes and talked in airy fairy way. But warm human being.

Thanks for your other contribution.

Hans ji;;

Yes , Manmohan Krishan yo yo song is really unique . Anil Biswas gave very memorable songs in Aaram . His compositions are wealth of class and classical songs; but I am a still ignorant about him adopting western based tunes.

I think in 50s …every MD s were exploring western tunes based on Rock and roll, cha cha cha , waltz, etc. While Naushad and SJ did gave waltz and SJ continuing with modern music ….it turned out to be C Ramchandra who took the cake away with his charming melodies based on cuban and goan rich jazz music. …..that made every one dance to the floor . Bhagwaan , Geeta Bali, C Ramchandra and Rajindra Krishan just exploded the cinema screen with Albela songs and made a history on box office. Following their success Even Hemant Kumar came up with some beautiful Havana based jazzy songs sticking to instruments that are always there in jazzy music.

There are many solos and duets but some chorus relevant to the theme are…..

Shalanji @121
‘I am very glad that Venkatramnji you have got enough material for to do her tribute then you should go with it. Does not matter if the songs number is small with you. Some other may contribute. Besides a tribute to a great lady is worth even it is small.’
Your request noted. Well in near future I will TRY to do a post on her. Before that I will have to complete two other posts which I have committed to Akji.

‘Salil gave me an impression of unassuming and friendly person and nothing about filminess. He did not ware those awful white sharkskin clothes and talked in airy fairy way. But warm human being.’

Yes, during our child hood we have seen him conducting rehearsals of youth choir in our area. He got involved in left politics when he was 16 and has worked in the rural areas, and Harijan Basti of South 24 Parganas. That may be one of the reasons for his humble and unassuming personality. During this period he composed several songs of Mass awakening.
Here is a well-known Bengali song composed during the IPTA days. A call for unity and a call to stand against oppression. This song was composed in the beginning of the ’50s The song was first recorded in 1954 in Hemanta Mukherjee’s voice.

Thanks for posting the chorus songs of different flavours, of Anil Biswas.
Here are more flavours of Anil Biswas.

Anil Biswas used Shamshad Begum’s voice for the first time in the fil Bhookh (1947). One of the notable songs was “Dekho Hara Hara Ban Hawa San San San” sung by Shamshad Begum, Anil Biswas & Chorus. The lyric was penned by Safdar Aah.

During my Kidd days …..Indian Temple bells were the one which introduced me to indian classical music …and church bells to western music . Continuous School’s ringing bells made me most happy for lunch breaks.

A bell is not a bell till it rings . Unwinding silence with winding of mechanical clocks was a great time……great winding gears that produced superb sounds like……jane kya tune kahee , jaane kya maine sunee , baat kuchh ban hi gayi .

Yes , a little tiny beat can bring forth many melodies lost in the crowd .
Hear and experience this hidden melody from a forgotten MD…. Robin Bannerjee .

145 Hans June 8, 2019 at 1:20 pm

Dr Shetty
Mehngai maar gayi reminded me of the fact that Manoj Kumar was one of those directors/producers who made good use of chorus.

Lambe Haath was GS Kohli’s first film. He continued to assist OPN, despite giving independent music in some films. This was like Ravi-Hemant pair. But, unfortunately he could not succeed like Ravi. He mostly used Rafi-Asha, but he used Lata also in some songs, mostly duets. Her two duets with Rafi and one with Usha in Shikari became super hits.

Hans ji @144;

Sir…myself a poet !…not at all …I just get carried away by the thoughts of hour glass . Linking songs and music to my past is my hobby ….and I think its a good habit to let loose memories to breath for certain period of time by letting loose the sand in hour glass.

The famous and most romantic duet….Pyar hua eqraar hua hai….from Shree 420 is a perfect example where one can find , vapour, precipitation [ rain] and thunder all being translated into music by series of violin strings , mandolin etc . One can find such magic only in the screen version recordings where the prelude starts much much before the song . The low malhar sitar playing in the background …..getting ready to ignite the two hearts and mandolin orchestra ,playing the rain drops , is really a treat for gazers and listeners . The sets and photography adding treat to eyes.

I have always been fascinated by SDB’s unique way of using the orchestra. He has also used the chorus to advantage to provide added quality to his songs. I mentioned ‘aa gup chup gup chup pyar karen’. A number of beautiful songs with chorus have been added by friends. But his stock of the 50s has not yet finished. I am giving some here. There was a film Angarey(1954) which was a flop, but it had beautiful dance songs in tribal settings and as expected SDB made use of chorus beautifully in three songs which I give here.
Pyar bulaye tohe – Asha and chorus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbsUYKWMcaY
He rajdulari bitiya ri – Lata and chorus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mosjnDx7Zk
Roop ki rani aayi – Shamshad and chorus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwoj3rsPwjE

Arunji mentioned that chorus should cover at least 50% of the song. That may leave very few songs for chorus quota. But I agree with him that chorus should not be just in the name and should have a substantial part to play and also have a good impact on the song. Bhatiaji posted the Kaagaz ke phool song ‘dekhi zamane ki yari’. But there is a chorus song in that film which can fulfil the criteria of Arunji, ‘san san san jo chali hawa’. Also there is another song ‘ek do teen char aur panch’ which is also a very good chorus song. I am posting these two here.
San san san jo chali hawa – rafi, asha, sudha and chorus

In 1958 films Lajwanti and Sitaron Se Aage, SDB composed 5 chorus songs each. I have selected 5 of them, though I like most of them.

First my great favourite ‘sambhal ke sambhal ke’ from Sitaron se aage by Rafi and chorus, enacted brilliantly by Johny Walker.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVkQnD9f0Gc
Next ‘aa khilte hain gul’ by Lata and chorus with a beautiful dance by Vyjyantimala to boot from the same film
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPDM4q9Hx-I
The third one from the same film is by Asha and chorus, again with Vyjyantimala dance. The song is ‘aaj kal parson men phoole jab sarson’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKJmd8vbFTU

Lajwanti had the famous ‘gaa mere man ga’ in two parts and ‘kuchh din pehle ek taal men kamal kunj ke andar’ but here I am giving first ‘chanda mama mere dwar aana’ by Asha, Manna Dey and chorus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6gVEo_bs14
and then ‘aaja chhaye kare badra re’ by Geeta and chorus

Canasya in his comment 54 raised a point why the series is stopped at the 50s. This started me thinking. I had a perception that in the 60s the number of chorus songs dropped considerably. After research, I found it correct. Though Shalanji has not replied to this point, in my view there are certain reasons of her stopping the series in the 50s. Shalanji remembers watching Anmol Ghadi, so she is much older in age than me. So for her 50s was more important than 60s. Also upto 50s female solos were on a higher side, which position was reversed in the 60s. Historically, female songs were related to chorus songs, so Shalanji being woman related to them more and because in 60s the female song number dropped, she might have remembered less number of chorus songs than most of us.

Now I provide a result of my research. I first compared the chorus songs of Naushad, SJ, CR and SDB, who had more churus songs than others in the 50s with their chorus songs in the 60s. These 4 MDs had composed 305 chorus songs in 139 films in the 50s, but their output dropped to just 90 songs in 112 films in the 60s. SJ’s score came down from 93 chorus songs from 40 films to 39 from 68 films. SDB’s 76 from 42 came down to 10 from 17 films in the 60s.

I also compared stats of five other MDs who were active both in the 50s and 60s. Chitragupta composed 85 chorus songs in 42 films in the 50s and then composed 36 songs in 41 films in the 60s. Madan Mohan 54 from 40 in the 50s and 22 from 32 in 60s. Roshan 40 from 35 in the 50s and 18 from 19 in the 60s. Ravi composed 45 in 22 films in 50s and 35 in 53 films in the 60s. OPN composed 22 in 41 in 50s and 8 in 21 in the 60s. It will be observed that Roshan showed the least change and that was because of qawwalis which were essentially chorus songs. It is also clear that OPN, though termed as duet king had not much faith in the chorus song even in the 50s.

Three other MDs who had a major share in composing films in the 60s Usha Khanna, KA and LP also registered lower number of chorus songs than the high average in the 50s. Of these 3 the first two had done some films in the 50s but LP started their career in 1963. Usha Khanna composed 29 chorus songs in 42 films. KA composed 45 in 52 ad LP composed 57 in 71 films.

I think this would give a fair view of the trends of chorus songs in the two decades. I am thankful to Shalanji for these posts which gave me an idea to collect the stats. I would try to collect total number of chorus songs for the 3 decades of 40s to 60s, and give them later. 30s is just a blind era with very few details.

Wow ! what a recall of SDB’s trails of songs . Listening to all of them made charming delights. Angarey’s tribal songs were new to me . Pyar bulaye tohe – Asha and chorus….from ….. Angarey(1954) song had a few words sung by Lata and Talat too. I think it will be a good idea to have an article on tribal songs in hindi cinema .

‘sambhal ke sambhal ke’ from Sitaron se aage by Rafi was favorite in our family too. In fact any song on Johnny walker was a great treat for all of us . Our selves singing in the groups made our neighbors envy of us.

Yes the chorus songs of 50s and beyond are not yet over. Exploring MD vise is a good idea. So keep it up sir …and let the trail fully lighted with more of SDB songs.

Hansji @ 153 and other interested SoY contributors

I am Flabbergasted at the deep insight Hansji had shown in his comment.

I hope his friend Canasayaji will agrees him totally.

He has right insight in finding the reasons why I stopped at the fifties and did not go further in sixties and the following decades.

After the main thrust at the beginning was done and then the following two decades showed the development of the Chorus Songs, the sixties was going to be just enumeration and not much skills on my part.

All those who were composers in forties already developed their skills fully in fifties and I felt that there was hardly anything substantial to write about the Chorus songs.

Just the example of LP following with fresh energy on the lines of SJ and there was very little new angles however LP were good, SJ had done the original style. Only their energy was important when SJ were breaking and eventually Jaikishan was going to die of the pressure of breaking.

However one could for the record go on analysing the sixties, seventies and so on. Likewise RK until his death went on using chorus with full throttle and show-business on huge sets.

And then we have got towards the end and at the beginning of the new century arrival of A.R.Rahaman with some new energy came into the songs and chorus songs.

But it was just a flash in the pan or fluff in the air.

So for me to stop at the fifties was the right sojourn, finishing line!

I appreciate Hansji for his hard work to produce the statistics and I show respect for his comment.

His comment has now become an added feature of the Part 3 of the Chorus songs in the Hindi Films.

Ik alhad balhad chhori was in my list, but as you know I put the songs in groups, so I was looking for other songs of the group. The song is really good. Your observation about Talat that his chorus songs are few is also correct and this shows your deep observation. ‘Ramji duhai hai’ was one of Talat’s earliest and quality chorus songs, but unfortunately audio quality is not good. Talat also sang very few bhajans or religious songs.

You Are perfectly right . The chorus songs of 50s onwards had plenty to offer ….and your statistics gives numerous examples to look for. The problem is the popularity charts of radio and doordarshan days who preferred to give more time to big wigs .

We of Chitragupt and S N Tripathi know of only those songs of the social movies era where they sticked to one style of compositions and their orchestra style . But if you listen to their earlier music when they were most sought after for ….Stunt , Fantasy , Semi Mythological….movies they had different style and had plenty of chorus songs that we have come to know now [ thru internet].

Sindbad the Sailor [1952] was one of such movies which had more than half a dozen chorus songs ….and I was just not aware of Chitragupt feat. Yes he was most prefered MD with Basant/ Homi Wadia movies . I liked his music in Zabak.

Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty;

World has stood its time because of prayers . We spend so much time reading and listening ….and then forgetting praying ……..repenting later . One can hear many old people singing bhajans in a temple ….and many scrolling over phones and others praying for win. Some people pray only when in turbulent conditions ….while sailing or flying. Once overcome they forget every bout of thoughts they lived at that moment of time .

Mother’s prayers are the purest ones for dear ones ….right from conceiving to the grown up times . Yes we all are byproduct of prayers.

Some bhajans and prayers in chorus forms….

Shalanji @162
I am happy I could read your mind and produce the comments to your liking. Thanks for the nice words. You are correct that LP copied SJ, but in my view they had more of the Panjab effect in their chorus songs. As you would have noticed there was a huge drop in the number of chorus songs. In the 60s the 12 MDs, the stats of whom I have given composed songs for about 47 % films (total – 443 out of 942) of the 60s and yet had only 340 chorus songs. In the 50s even the 4 MDs who gave music in only 12% films had 305 chorus songs.

About RK, Dr Shetty has given some chorus songs. If they are taken as a sample there is vast difference in quality also. So drop in quantity and quality has resulted in a big perception change about chorus songs in our minds and as I said it had more effect in persons like you who came into the 60s remembering older songs. Persons like me mostly started appreciating music in mid or later 60s and moved backwards towards 50s and 40s. Actually this series of chorus songs has helped me to view song stats in a different way. So again thanks for the same.

Bhatia ji @170 & 171
True to your nature you have shared some original and insightful thoughts and feelings. Thanks for the bunch of Bhajans.
My homage to your beloved mother on her remembrance day. And thanks for sharing the Kirtan.

175 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty June 14, 2019 at 12:18 pm

I missed to include the following in RK movies.

DHARAM KARAM,1975.
Ek din bik jaayega maati ke mol .
Tere Humsafar geet hai tere .

SATYAM SHIVAM SUNDARAM,1978.
The Title Song.
Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal..
Two Manna Dey bhajans…One with the titles and the other , later in the movie.

I don’t think BIWI O BIWI,1981 has any chorus songs.

176 Hans June 14, 2019 at 12:44 pm

Dr Shetty
In Kal Aaj aur Kal, there was a song ‘bhanwre ki gunjan hai mere dil’, one of my KK favourites, was a chorus song and beautifully composed too.

Songs from Tulsidas, Sharda and Gharana are my favourites too.

177 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty June 14, 2019 at 1:11 pm

Hans ji,
I always thought the Kishore beauty was a solo while it had all the requisites to be a chorus song…many pairs dancing together.

178 Hans June 14, 2019 at 3:03 pm

Bhatiaji
I join you in remembering your mother. Our generation was the one for which parents were more important than the present generation and mother was certainly one rung above father. I will share a personal anecdote which would tell the difference between a mother and father. I think it was 1974, on a Sunday we went to play cricket. It was the first day of the season after the exams. During batting while playing my flick shot on a full toss, I got an outer edge and the ball hit me on the left eye. It resulted in a small cut below the eye and a little swelling with a red eye. When I reached home both mother and father were there. I would give their individual reaction which would set apart characters of a mother and a father. My mother said immediately ‘from now on no cricket for you’, but father said such things happen in sports and why he will not play. I always remember this incident which sums up the character of our parents. Mother’s love has more emotions, while father’s love has maturity. Father would insist on healthy food while the mother would pamper tastes of our tongue to prepare dishes on demand.

Regarding Chitragupta, who is my favourite MD, Sindabad the Sailor was his first successful film and his music fits the theme of the film perfectly. One year later Tulsidas became superhit and its theme was totally different and he came up with stunning songs. If one listens to the music of Sindbad and Tulsidas, he would hardly believe the music is by the same person. And there are people who say he is ordinary.

Is it Lata Mangeshkar or Suman Kalyanpur singing with Md.Rafi and Chorus
San San Chale Pavan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jfQUkcBkXs

180 Hans June 14, 2019 at 4:44 pm

Venkataramanji
I would say this is a very good query. This is one of the songs where Suman has no tremolo and it was an era when she tried to sing like Lata or the MDs hoped to find Lata in her. So one has to look for other attributes of Suman and Lata. I had checked out this song when I prepared a list of Rafi songs, yet since it was your query I listened to the song intently four times and in my opinion it is Suman.

Hans ji @178;

Your younger days shows that you were in good hands of your parents. One passionate player can’t improve unless hurt . As opener I had faced many bumpers as I was not afraid of fast swingers ….but googlies were the one which scared me a lot …disturbing my concentrations . Yes I was hurt many times during fieldings . Swollen fingers and Palms….. together with workshop pressure in forging , carpentry , lathe machines , hydro dynamics labs and so many other field surveys made me switch to off breaks balling and batting down to fourth position . But facilities at I I T were awesome . Beside music I was a sort after student in photography club .

Yes , Those were the Days , taking a break for that lovely song of my college days…..

Mary Hopkin ….Those were the days ….with lyrics

Regarding Chitragupt , I rate him as one of the most polite and learned gentleman . Before entering Music world , being double MA and teaching college students is no mean achievement . His in depth knowledge of both the worlds is well appreciating . Yes his orchestra styling was fantastic , pre and post 60s. Now I will proceed on with further listening of This Trio of fantastic series….S N Tripathi, Chitragupt and D Dilip.

The singer is surely Suman Kalyanpur . She had that particular note that one can observe @ 1.01 of the song .

Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty ;

All songs of AAB E HAYAT are favorite of mine . Sardar Malik composed beautiful tunes . Fantasy , semi historical and social movies suited him very much . Where can one find film like Saranga whose songs were on everyone lips during its release in 60s.

Gaddeswarup @ 163

Thanks for your comment. It is very difficult to think of another way to store the post than the present arrangement that AK has. This post is the part of the blog “Songs of Yore” and you will find that it will be stored in the Index of the posts so far.

The internet has immense space unlike the general libraries. For example Oxford University has a vast underground storing space so have other University libraries. British Library in London has also plenty of space under their own building and also away from the City of London.

I do not think Asiatic libraries in Bombay, Calcutta and Madras have got spaces as much as British libraries have.

Yet you always have a finger touch access at the Internet and then you just tap “Songs of Yore” and then you will have access to the posts and with recent comments or past comments as well. It is a living phenomenon that grows as an Indian Vat-Vriksh.

I have full praise for the present arrangement.

Bhatiaji @184
Yes my mother was very protective as I went to school early and was small in height till I went to college. I allowed to join cricket team in 10th class and that too when a close acquaintance – who was in the team – satisfied her of my safety. In the first year I was mainly a bowler and batted at number 11. But, the next year both the openers passed out and as you know nobody in India likes to open, I was asked and I immediately agreed as I had no fears like you. Since then I always faced the first ball in my cricket life.

You are right, in Chitragupta’s days double MA really meant something, but later people considered MA just as a hobby to pass time till they got some job. I did LLB when in service from Evening Law Centre of DU which was near your old school Harcourt Butler School. There I met a person from UP who was triple MA and yet jobless but was running his family budget on tutions. He could not understand the lectures which were in English and came to us (we were three from the same building) to ask. It was then I asked about his education and asked him why he did so many MAs. He told us that he did it just for killing time and also to fulfil his wish to boast of his multiple degrees before people of his village.

189 ksbhatia June 22, 2019 at 12:07 am

Hans ji @188.;

Yes , your college was a sort of in M B higher secondary school . At far end was S N Das Gupta college just next to the St. Mary School. Mandir Marg …earlier known as Reading Road …had a series of schools lined up on this road and you will be surprised that sons of Lal Bahadur Shastri were educated in our school and they , some time , were dropped in their 1954 Fiat middle hinged door car. The Sahani’s of famous Regal ‘/ Rivoli theaters were coming to the school on horse driven buggies from their residence at Bangla Sahib Lane just behind Hanuman Mandir.

In school time Cricket championships the usual schools which reached to the top were Raisaina , M B , Modern and Butler Schools . Thanks to the presence of stalwarts like Amarnath Brothers [3] , Ramesh Saxena and quite others who made it to the level of Ranjhi cricket levels.

Again…..those were the days…..

ksbhatia ji,
Humour, laughter are definitely the best medicine for worry, anxiety and tension. Nice funny / unusual songs.

Have rounded up several funny/ unusual songs to be posted here.
Meanwhile,Mansoon, which entered the Karnataka coast a fortnight later than usual ( May end/ June first week being the norm),has become active only from this morning.
A rare song from a not so well known composer.
SANDESH,1952.
Sulochana Kadam, Nihal Chand Jain,S Purushottam.

Saawan Bhadon ke badarwa gaye aaye re ho gaye aaye re…

SHRIMATI JI,1952

Has half a dozen chorus songs, all enjoyable light hearted ones.

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.

Basant Prakash.
1. Lipstick lagaanewale dil ko jalanewale….
Shamshad Begum & chorus.
2. Kabhi hamare ghar bhi aao ji
O Nagad Narayan ji…
Shamshad Begum, ? two unidentified female voices & chorus.

Jimmy ( James Singh,)
1.Barkha ki raat mein dil jalta jalta jalta hai..
Asha Bhonsle & chorus.
2,3. Ashiqon ko Ishq ne ulat palat kar diya..
Kishore Kumar, Shamshad Begum & chorus.
( 2 versions).
And,my favourite. Shamshad Begum is at her playful and energetic best here and Shyama does full justice to the boisterous song.
Ae Babu O Babu ji main na karoon teri naukri…
Chorus comes in the end, and, there is this unexpected yodelling ( Jimmy sounding uncannily like Kishore Kumar!) emanating from the heroine’s mouth, picturised cleverly.
