Ravi’s best duets for Rafi

20 August 2019

Ravi-RafiIn my last post I covered Ravi’s best solo songs for Rafi. He composed about 250 songs for Rafi, including duets. It is a huge number in absolute as well as relative terms. Only two, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Shankar-Jaikishan, have undisputedly composed more Rafi songs than him, as can be expected. Chitragupta is in the same range or marginally more than him. About 42% of these songs are duets, including male-male duets, and songs having more than two singers. Over 100 duets is a significant number, and several of them are so good, no discussion on Ravi’s songs for Rafi is complete without mentioning his duets.

There is another remarkable feature of his duets. The female companion singer is predominantly Asha Bhosle, and you would have to make some efforts to find a standout duet with Lata Mangeshkar. This fits in with Hans Jakhar’s observation earlier that Asha Bhosle was the most prominent singer overall for Ravi, figuring in about 50% of his total songs. In fact if one were to select best 10 duets, composed by Ravi for Rafi, they would be almost all with Asha Bhosle. But, haath kangan ko aarsee kya? Without much ado, let me post some of his best duets.

1. Mujhe pyar ki zindagi denewaale by (with Asha Bhosle) from Pyar Ka Saagar (1961), lyrics Prem Dhavan

Pyar Ka Saagar I remember for two superb Mukesh solos: Wafa jinse ki bewafa ho gaye, and Sada khush rahe tu jafa karnewaale, but here is an excellent duet by Rafi and Asha Bhosle, in a soft and melodious tune, picturised on Rajendra Kumar and Meena Kumari.

2. Jab se tumhein dekha hai aankhon mein tumhi tum ho (with Asha Bhosle) from Gharana (1961), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni

Now Ravi composes a peppy duet, going on Rajendra Kumar and Asha Parekh, who are prancing around in Vrindavan Garden (?).

3. Kahiye kaisa mijaaz hai aapka (with Asha Bhosle) from Salam Memsaab (1961), lyrics Asad Bhopali

Kumkum is a terrific dancer, but this is a thoroughly unknown film, with an unheard name, Subir, in the lead. Yet Ravi composes a fabulous duet.

4. Yamma yamma, tu parwaane main shamma…Kya teri mehfil hai sanam…Ya dilruba ya dilruba (with Asha Bhosle) from China Town (1962), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri

Is this an Asha Bhosle solo, a Rafi solo or a Rafi-Asha Bhosle duet, or all of these? In this interesting composition, the first part of the song is a pure night club dance song in the voice of Asha Bhosle, picturised on Helen, then Shammi Kapoor makes a wild entry screaming Yamma, and starts singing Kya teri mehfil hai sanam, Ya dilruba ya diluba.  Close your eyes, and Rafi is not Rafi, he becomes the wild Shammi Kapoor. The tune changes several times in the song, with the singers chanting Yamma yamma in unison in the end. This film has several solos and duets in the same wild style, such as Baar baar dekho, hazaar baar dekho and Bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu. And another one by Rafi-Meenu Purushottam, Dekhoji ek baala jogi.

5. Tumhein pa ke humne jahan pa liya hai (with Asha Bhosle) from Gahra Daagh (1963), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni

You give natural surroundings, a couple in love, and Ravi would come with a gorgeous Rafi-Asha Bhosle duet. He gives Asha Bhosle precedence in this song, further evidence of his special preference for her.

6. Sang sang rahenge tumhare ji huzoor (with Asha Bhosle) from Mulzim (1963), lyrics Shakeel Badayuni

I just said nature, and a romantic couple, and Ravi comes up with another absolutely joyous duet, picturised on Pradeep Kumar and Shakeela. A less heard song, but a great gem.

7. Meri pahli aarzoo ka ye salaam yaad rakhna (with Asha Bhosle) from Pyar Ka Bandhan (1963), lyrics Qamar Jalalabadi

Such songs seem to have become second nature to Ravi. He does not care if it is for a C-grade movie, picturised on inconspicuous actors like Keval Kumar and Naaz. Ravi simply does his professional job, and Rafi-Asha Bhosle are equal to the task.

8. Maine kaha tha ana Sunday ko Saunday ko (with Asha Bhosle) from Ustadon Ke Ustad (1963), lyrics Asad Bhopali

In the original Never on a Sunday, the lady forbade the guy to kiss her on a Sunday, though all other days were permitted. But in this adaptation, Asad Bhopali reverses the order; Helen tells the guy she had asked him to come on Sundays, why did he come on other days. A minor difference, but perhaps more logical – Sunday is more relaxed for fun. C Ramchandra had also asked many years ago, Ana meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday. That Maine kahan tha is inspired from a foreign song does not reduce its charm one bit. Just shows Ravi’s capability to compose from a wild Shammi Kapoor song, to a soulful romantic duet, to a fun song for Johnny Walker and Helen, who is fantastic as a coconut seller.

9. Ye kahmoshiyan ye tanhaaiyaan, mohabbat ki duniya hai kitni jawaan (with Asha Bhosle) from Ye raaste hain pyar ke (1963), lyrics Rajendra Krishna

Back to sylvan surroundings, and snow-capped valley, and the lovely couple Sunil Dutt and Leela Naidu, who was once regarded as the most beautiful woman of the world. And you can trust Ravi will compose an out of the world duet for this situation. This film was Sunil Dutt’s debut production. Its story was based on Nanavati murder case, which was reprised in Akshay Kumar-starrer Rustom (2016).

10. Naa ye zameen thi naa aasman tha (with Asha Bhosle) from Sagaai (1966), lyrics Rajendra Krishna

I may be by now sounding like a worn-out record, but Ravi keeps on giving superb Rafi-Asha Bhosle romantic duets one after the other, now picturised on Biswajeet and Rajshree.

11. Tumhari nazar kyun khafa ho gayi (with Lata Mangeshkar) from Do Kaliyan (1966), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi

I have to remind the readers that this post was on Rafi’s duets, and not Rafi-Asha Bhosle duets composed by Ravi. That my first ten songs happened to be all with Asha Bhosle only confirms  that she was the principal singer for Ravi. Every other female singer was the ‘other’ singer for him, and that includes Lata Mangeshkar. I had once said that some music directors used Asha Bhosle reluctantly, some used her voluntarily, giving her quite a large number songs, though reserving the best for Lata Mangeshkar. Ravi is the only one among the leading music directors whose primary female singer was Asha Bhosle by choice. (OP Nayyar was a class by himself, for complete exclusion of Lata Mangeshkar.) Let me end this post with a Rafi duet with one of the ‘other’ singers, lest the readers should think that Hans (and Mumbaikar8, Arvind and Arvinder Sharma) have converted me into an Asha Bhosle-bhakt 🙂 .  The song is quite good though. I am sure the readers would provide a balance by mentioning more Rafi’s duets with other singers, including male singers.

Thank you AK ji,
It’s a fabulous post, and I was expecting it.
Some songs on the list were unknown to me, but I liked them too.
For adding songs,
I had thought of Hum bhi agar bacche
But it’s a trio. So skipping it.
I can think of

Taaron Ki chhaon mein
https://youtu.be/fDY384CeAyU

I won’t say it’s a great song, but it was there on my list of Lata -Ravi songs.

To add more, let me think

AK ji,
Asha: Lata_ 10:1!
Asha has an upper hand both numerically as well as qualitatively. Still, 10:1 was a surprise!

Some Rafi_ Lata duets:

EK MAHAL HO SAPNON KA, 1975.
Title song.
The best ,in my opinion.

GRIHASTHI,1963.
Jaane tere nazro ne kya kar diya…
( Of course,Asha has two duets with Rafi.)

DO KALIYAN,1966.
Ye Sama ye Rut ye Nazare…

MEHERBAAN,1967.
Ek Raja ki sun lo kahani..

SAMAJ KO BADAL DALO,1970.
Taaron ki chaon mein
Sapnon ki gaon mein.

GANGA TERI PAANI AMRIT,1971.
Title song.

Ravi’s duets of Rafi make a good addition to the posts on Rafi on SoY.
As far as Ravi is concerned, this just the beginning in the exploration tour of Ravi.
Once other male singers have been covered, we can turn back to the reaming solos with the female playback singers.

7 AK August 20, 2019 at 2:57 pm

Anup,
Thanks a lot. The multiple singer songs I count in duets, but Hum bhi agar bachche hote I have used earlier in my inaugural post on Ravi’s many splendoured talent as a child birthday song.

8 AK August 20, 2019 at 3:02 pm

Dr Shetty,
You have joined Asha Bhosle Fan Club on SoY. She is all over in the music of Ravi. Therefore, I didn’t have to go beyond Rafi-Asha Bhosle, and a consolation duet with Lata Mangeshkar. Among the songs you have added I like Jaane teri nazaron ne kya kar diya a lot. I could have added it to do some justice to Lata Mangeshkar.

9 AK August 20, 2019 at 3:04 pm

Ashokji,
Thanks a lot. Ravi is turning out to be quite an exploration.

Thanks a lot for the additional songs. These happen to be predominantly with Asha Bhosle. I am sure it just happened.

19 AK August 20, 2019 at 8:01 pm

S Joseph @14, 15, 17,
It is interesting all the songs you have added are Rafi-Asha Bhosle duets. Neel gagan pe udate baadal aa aa is excellent.

Good Evening AK Ji,

Thanks for the beautiful compilation.

21 AK August 20, 2019 at 11:02 pm

Mr Nakka,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Ye raatein is a beautiful song, one of the best compositions of Ravi, but it is a Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhosle duet. The second duet fits here, not posted earlier, and very soulful.

22 mumbaikar8 August 21, 2019 at 6:53 am

AK,
Enjoyed Ravi Rafi duets.
I prefer their solos more.
Two good songs missing in your list.
Mujhe Gale Se Laga Lo – Nanda – Sunil Dutt – Aaj Aur Kal – Sad Songs – Ravi

Mumbaikar8,
I am happy you liked the songs. Liking solos more is perhaps universal. The music directors too perhaps give them more importance.

24 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty August 21, 2019 at 11:19 am

PYAR KIYA TOH DARNA KYA, 1963.
The three Rafi _ Asha duets in the movie were not a match for the popular Rafi solos, Jaan E Bahaar husn tera bemisaal hai and Zindagi kya hai, Gam ka dariya hai.

1. Mohabbat ka nagma zuban par na aata…

2. Dil tumko de diya Jaan E Jigar…
( On Agha and Shubha Kote).

3. Mera Dil aashiqana hai
Kabhi iss pe kabhi iss pe…

25 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty August 21, 2019 at 11:24 am

The EK PHOOL DO MALI Rafi _ Asha duet Ye parda hatao ,Zara mukhda dikhao was very popular in it’s time.
The parody Chal chal re naujawan is okay.

26 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty August 21, 2019 at 11:39 am

BHAROSA, 1963.
Rajinder Krishen.

The most popular duet was Lata _ Mahinder Kapoor one…Aaj ki mulaqat bas itni.

Two Rafi _ Asha duets:

1. Kaahe itna gumaan choriye
Ye Mela do din ka..
( A village Mela dance featuring the lead pair of Guru Dutt and Asha Parekh, trained dancers , both.)

2. Kabhi dushmani Kabhi dosthi
Kabhi baat baat mein dillagi..
( Mehmood and Shubha Kote.)

27 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty August 21, 2019 at 11:49 am

RAKHI, 1962.

Rafi,Asha; Rajinder Krishen.

Dekho mehnat se daulat ki yaari
Din raat badle haalaat badle
Mehnat ne Duniya sawaari…

Background songs are usually solos, right? Especially male solos.
A rare instance of a duet as a background song.

28 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty August 21, 2019 at 11:58 am

MODERN GIRL, 1961.

Rafi _ Asha on Johnny Walker and Smriti Biswas.

Tod diya chashma mera tune O Bewafaa..

The popular duet Ye mausam rangeen Sama by Mukhesh and Suman Kalyanpur is on the lead pair Pradeep Kumar and Sayeeda Khan.

29 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty August 21, 2019 at 11:59 am

Rajinder Krishen is the lyricist of the first song and Gulshan Bawra of the second.

MEHANDI, 1958.

Rafi, S Balbir, Chandbala and chorus; Khumar Barabankvi.

Allah ki Rehmat ka ae dil
Jisko bhi sahara mil jaye..

In APNA GHAR, 1960 Rafi has three duets with three different singers for three different situations.

Prem Dhawan.

Kaise bheegi bheegi pyare hain najaare.. Romantic song…Suman Kalyanpur.

Aaraam hai haraam
Tum desh ke kone kone
Pahuncha do ye Paigham… Patriotic/ inspirational song as a stage performance… Asha Bhonsle.

Koi bhi na ho is jag mein Daata
Ankhon se majboor…. Blind Beggar song…Arati Mukherjee.

32 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty August 21, 2019 at 12:37 pm

Four Rafi _ Asha duets in TU NAHI AUR SAHI, 1960.

Asad Bhopali.

1.Ye rang bhara baadal
Ye udta hua aanchal…

2. Dekhiye Huzoor
Mujhse reh ke door door..

Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Deewana hoon main pyar ka
Sanaa hai ikraar ka…

Shakeel Noorani.

Meri Mehfil mein as ke dekh le
Jara aankhen mila ke dekh le…

33 Hans August 21, 2019 at 2:03 pm

AK
I think we have been quite successful in converting you. The target which was in our mind has been achieved. Other friends would agree our target was not making you an Asha-bhakt. I would say ‘ab wo hamare ho gaye ikrar karen ya na karen’ 😉

Your great dish is a proof of that. Some songs would naturally be left out, volume being so large. I also agree with Mumbaikar8 that Ravi’s focus was more on solos. In Rafi’s solos also their was a good number of fun songs. Similarly Ravi composed a number of funny duets. Here are a few of them.

Teri patli kamar teri bali umar – Rafi, Asha – Dus Lakh
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU1VXj5ZivY
Honth gulabi gaal katore – Rafi, Asha – Ghar Sansar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1TW5Ppw-xQ
The great parody ‘chal chal re naujawan’ – Rafi, Asha – Ek Phool Do Mali
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6RlLVak03Y
Char batti ka nishan – Rafi, Asha – Ghar Ki Laaj
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rHK32NrJl8
Sambhal kar ishq farmana – Rafi, Balbir – Pyar Ka Bandhan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2DAAVwxck8

34 AK August 21, 2019 at 2:22 pm

Dr Shetty,
Thanks for mentioning the songs. How I wish you were able to give YT links.

Bharosa: You are right, Mahendra Kapoor-Lata Mangeshkar duet was more popular than Rafi-Asha Bhosle duets. But the most popular were Rafi solos.

35 AK August 21, 2019 at 2:33 pm

Hans,
I expected you would be delighted, but ‘converting’? Aren’t you drawing exaggerated conclusion? 🙂

The only inference that can be drawn is I am stating a self-evident fact that Asha Bhosle was the principal female playback singer for Ravi, and consequently Rafi’s most famous duets by Ravi are with her. In the series on Ravi, if Lata Mangeshkar comes out as ‘the other’, I am non-emotional about it, but it would be wrong for Asha Bhosle Fan Club to gloat about it. 🙂

36 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty August 22, 2019 at 11:40 am

KAAJAL, 1965.

Sahir Ludhianvi.

Two Rafi _ Asha duets:

Jab lag diwe baati
Tel ghata, baati bujhe
Sowega din raati….
Mehfil mein teri yun hi rahe jasn e chiragan
Ankhon mein hi ye raat guzar jaaye
toh achha…
( A song of contrasts…Meena Kumari reading Kabira next to her mother in law’s deathbed and Rajkumar, the husband, in a Kotha.)

Zara si aur pila de bhang…
( Mehmood_ Mumtaz).
