Salt, pepper and foods

16 October 2020

Celebrating the World Food Day (16 October)

Salt, pepper and foodYou would hardly find a dining table in homes or restaurants anywhere in the world which does not have salt and pepper shakers. Without salt and pepper the food would be without any taste. These have also acquired a venerable place in our history. ‘Namak Satyagrah’ or Dandi March (1930) was one of the three major movements launched by Gandhiji in India’s freedom struggle. The history of pepper is older than the history of India; there is archaeological evidence of people using pepper in 2000 BC in India. From here it went all over the world through trade from ancient times. Pepper also became a curse, because some European traders in pepper gradually became our rulers for about two centuries.

Yet you would scarcely believe that these commonplace items of daily use would have museums dedicated to them. There is one in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in USA, displaying some 20000 pairs of shakers. This has been overtaken by one in Israel by a passionate collector, Eitan Bar-on, who has converted his home in Hadera into a Salt & Pepper Museum, showing more than 37000 pairs of shakers. His shakers include Santa Claus, Christmas trees, toilet seats, and even Queen Elizabeth and her dog.

Salt and pepper being so central to making any food edible, these have entered the culture of all societies in their idioms and proverbs. ‘Maine aapka namak khaya hai, Sardar’ was the ultimate profession of loyalty. It is another matter that the Sardar had no time for such niceties, and reciprocated with, Le ab goli kha. Another interesting use of ‘namak’ is in the sense of enhancing the vocal quality of a female singer in a flirtatious, playful way. In Kalank (2019), the royal princess Roop (played by Alia Bhatt), trapped in a loveless marriage, goes to Bahar Begum (played by Madhuri Dixit) to learn dance and music. Bahar appraises her thus: आपकी आवाज़ अच्छी है, लेकिन नमक थोड़ा कम है. On a DD Bharati programme about light classical music, the expert, going in raptures about Shobha Gurtu, said that she was exceptional because in her voice Dharwad’s classicism combined with Bombay’s namak. Our Mumbaikar8 once described a song as फीका, “not saltless, but less salt”.

Namak leads to two derivatives denoting exactly opposite character traits: Namak Haram and Namak Halal. Incidentally, Amitabh Bachchan acted in both the films, and both were extremely successful. And not to forget another acclaimed film Namkeen (1982). The ‘salty’ girl in the film (Sharmila Tagore named as ‘Nimki’) was a reserved spinster. However, namkeen has a very different connotation in common usage. If you tell the father of a grown up girl, Masha Allah! Aapki ladki to bahut namkeen hai, you are inviting violence, because it is overtly suggestive and vulgar. But it is one of the quirks of language that if you say the same thing in Sanskirtised Hindi, आपकी कन्या तो बहुत लावण्यमयी है, it is dignified compliment.

There must be something about namak, which lends itself to such varied uses in culture, cinema and literature. Namak Ka Daroga is one of the most famous short stories of Premchand of his idealistic phase.

’Meetha’ (sugar) does not lag far behind. It has a very strong association with joy and happiness. Cadbury had a famous advertising campaign which ended with the tagline, ‘Kuchh meetha ho jaye’ – sounds so simple, but every creative team is in pursuit of such Holy Grail. Hitting such lines is a matter of epiphany.  When someone brings you an unexpected good news, you greet him with, Aapke munh mein ghee shakkar. And you share your success or any good news with your friends and office colleagues with laddoos – Munh meetha kar lete hain. And we are all enamoured of singers who are endowed with a sweet voice. Hemant Kumar is one whose Birth Centenary we are celebrating on SOY. But you have to be careful, many people avoid sweets as they have चीनी की बीमारी, or simply, ”मुझे माफ़ करें, मुझे sugar है.” Diabetes is regarded as the mother of all diseases, and unfortunately India is the world capital of this disease, making it the public health challenge no. 1 of our country.

Back to pepper with which I started. Just as you embellish the taste of food with salt and pepper, you would say things Namak mirch lagakar for making it more colourful. Given our attitude to women, they are advised to carry pepper spray in their purse as a protection against roadside Romeos in case they try to act funny. Ketan Mehta made a wonderful film Mirch Masala (1987), in which the women in the pepper factory resorted to mass pepper spraying to save themselves from the lecherous Subedar.

While salt and pepper are integral to food, by themselves they have no value. If you include other food items, the number of idioms in Hindi would go into hundreds: Daal mein kuchh kala hai; Tumhari daal nahi galegi; Ye munh aur masoor ki daal; Aate daal ka bhaav maloom ho jayega; Muflisi mein aata geela; Doodh ka jala mattha bhi phoonk kar peeta hai; Doodh ka karj, you can go on and on. You can trust Bollywood to have songs for everything under the sun. Let us enjoy some songs based on food items to celebrate the World Food Day (to commemorate the founding of the Food and Agricultura Organisation under UNO on 16 October 1945, and wish the FAO all the best on its 75th Anniversary).

1. Noon roti khayenge jingi sang hi bitayenge by Khesari Lal Yadav (Bhojpuri rap, 2018), lyrics Azad Singh Premji, and Pyarelal Kaviji, music Ashish Verma

This Bhojpuri-Hindi wrap has become viral globally. The language and the delivery are whacky, and the declaration is unambiguous:

I would eat salt and roti, but I would spend my life only with her

Somehow we fell in love, and I proclaimed it to her
It spread like wild fire in the village from one ear to another
Panchayats ware held
It also led to thana-FIR
Lathis came out between her family and my family
In spite of all that I would eat noon-roti, but would spend life only with her.

It was the night of Maaghi winter,
We had set up a date for 8pm,
But a blasted dog bit me and blood started oozing from the wound
Yet I was driven to meet her in passion of love
You may shoot me, but I will never forget her,
I would eat noon-roti, but would spend my life only with her

I would jump on the tracks under a train
I would even fight with the judge for court marriage
I would eat noon-roti, but would spend my life only with her

This has shades of what a Pakistani leader, after 1971 comprehensive defeat, proclaimed, ‘We will eat grass, but give thousand cuts to India’.

Incidentally, the singer is himself named after a coarse pulse, Khesari (खेसारी). Its cultivation had been banned for over fifty years for its suspected toxicity. Now the ban has been lifted. It is a sturdy crop and can grow in very adverse circumstances. I don’t know about this daal, but the song sung by Khesari Lal Yadav is definitely toxic.

2. Ek roz hamari bhi daal galegi by Kishore Kumar from Bandi (1957), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Hemant Kumar

This song has figured earlier in two other posts: On Kishore Kumar’s crazy comic songs, and Parody songs (embedded parody). But it is equally superb as a food song. After struggling with haldi, mirchi, atta, batata, and ruing that his Bhaiya is BA, MA pass, Kishore Kumar cheers up that one day his दाल भी गलेगी. Besides the surface meaning, it is used in an idiomatic sense that his fate, too, will turn for the better. You can’t miss the embedded parodies of KL Saigal’s Panchhi kaahe hot udaas, and Ashok Kumar-Devika Rani’s Main ban ki chidiya ban ke ban ban dolun re. And there is an interesting contrast with Khesari Lal Yadav’s song. Kishore Kumar was fed up of eating roti and nimbu ka achar, but Khesari driven by passion for the girl is okay even with roti and noon.

3. Daal roti khao Prabhu ke gun gaao by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Jwar Bhata (1973), lyrics Rajendra Krishna, music Laxmikant-Pyarelal

When you are not worried about your daily daal-roti, you can afford to be philosophical, and sing Daal roti khao Prabhu ke gun gaao.

4. Zabaan pe laaga re namak ishq ka by Rekha Bharadwaj from Omkara (2006), lyrics Gulzar, music Vishal Bharadwaj

When you see Bipasha Basu in this item number, you know what namkeen exactly means. No wonder, for her ishq too is salty.

5. Hai hai mirche by Sukhwinder Singh and Alka Yagnik from Biwi No.1 (1999), lyrics Sukhvinder Singh, music Anu Malik

The best metaphor to describe the hot dancer, Karishma Kapoor, is ‘mirche’.

6. Main to raste se ja raha tha..Tujhko mirchi lagi to main kya karun by Kuamr Sanu and Alka Yagnik from Coolie No. 1 (1995), lyrics Sameer, music Anand-Milind

It is difficult to translate Mirchi lagna, but we all know its meaning. The street slang fits perfectly to the persona of Govinda. Beside pepper, the song also has other food items such as bhel-puri and ice cream.

7. Atharah baras ki kanwari kali thi..Chane ke khet mein by Purnima from Anjaam (1994), lyrics Sameer, music Anand-Milind

Chana cultivation has become unremunerative, and fresh green chana has become a rarity. This once a modest food item sells at the rate of ₹200kg in a narrow season of a month. Therefore, I find it such a waste that instead of enjoying the chana, the two protagonists while away their time in useless philandering.

8. Dil ne dastarkhan bichhaya daawat-e-ihq hai by Javed Ali and Sunidhi Chauhan from Daawat-e-Ishq (2014), lyrics Kauser-Munir, Sajid-Wajid

Here is a full platter of food as the hero is a chef-cum-restaurateur. His gang croons this song to the lady Pariniti Chopra. In this song love is soaked in sherbet, finally she conveys her qabool by taking a spoon of phirni.

9. Lo kha lo madam khana by Khemchand Prakash and Rekha (?) from Street Singer (1938), lyrics Arzoo Lakhanavi, music RC Boral

All the food songs are necessarily comic, but this one takes the cake. The male dancer-singer of this song is supposed to be Khemchand Prakash, and one site has identified Rekha as the female singer. It is known that Khemchand Prakash was a trained dancer. Yet seeing him dance and sing in a comic video is a delightful experience.

10. Aloo ki bhaji baingan ka bharta boloji bolo kya khaoge by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Wafa (1972), lyrics Rakjendra Krishna, music Laxmikant-Pyarelal

In a similar vein of breaking the stereotype, Sanjay Khan gives various choices of food to Rakhi who is willing to take whatever he can make. Finally, she realises it is all gas, and the man is not capable of giving her anything.

11. Le lo, Mooliram aur Bhindimal ka nikal gaya hai diwala by Rafi from Dulhan (1958), lyrics SH Bihari, music Ravi

Veganism has become the new fad in many parts of the world. We have been primarily a vegetarian society. This song gives you the best of gaajar, parwal, gobi, tamatar, karela, batata, methi and baigan, sourced from different cities of the country, such as Patna, Banaras, Surat, Dilli, Muradabad, Nadiad, Ahmedabad and Kalkatta. We missed the song in my post on songs on metros/small town, but thanks to Dr Shetty, I am happy to include it in food section where it truly belongs.

12. Vivah bhojanambu by Madhavapeddi Sathyam from Mayabazar (Telugu, 1957), lyrics Pingali Nagendra Rao, music Ghantshala

I have been lucky to come across this song from the bilingual Telugu/Tamil blockbuster, which should be undisputedly the greatest food song. My daughter strongly recommended the film Mahanati (available on Prime Video), a biopic on the life of the Telugu/Tamil actress of yesteryear’s, Savithri. It is difficult to make a film of this genre which can hold the audience interest, but it is an outstanding film. This had a clipping of Vivah bhojanambu from Mayabazaar, and thus it was that I reached this song. Mayabaazar was a mythological film based on an episode from the epic Mahabharata, about Balram’s daughter Shashirekha (played by Savithri), set to marry Arjun’s son Abhimanyu, but Mama Shakuni conspires to get her married to Duryodhan’s son Lakshman. Krishna takes the help of Ghatotkach who, by his magical powers, carries off Shashirekha to safety where she is married to Abhimanyu; Ghatotkach himself returns to the palace and transforms himself into Shashirekha and wreaks havoc at the wedding. It was during this period that he comes across all the feast prepared for the wedding. SV Ranga Rao playing Ghatotkach does a superb job in this fun song of devouring the laddoos, jalebis and all the spread.

I also came to know that this song is inspired from the English song The laughing policeman by Charles Jolley/Charles Penrose, originally recorded in 1922.

AK ji;

A very nice deviation from the normal !! Songs on a Platter !! What do you listen to when you’re cooking , I wonder.!! Yes, there is a tendancy for every one to humm a song as he or she walks up to kitchen already mouth watering for intended end product .

Many of comic songs and clips are there to enjoy whenever hunger strikes.

Just now some of Laural and hardy clips comes up on recall mode….imagining salt pepper and soups…..tasting great.

KS Bhatiaji,
Singing in the toilet is more common than singing in the kitchen. That reminds me of Singing In The Rain.

You are an expert of Laurel and Hardy. Their any clip is highly enjoyable. Nice additions.

AK,

What a nice narrative on namak mirch and foods. I visualized while typing this out you were having a constant naughty smile, without knowing it yourself. I thoroughly enjoyed the post. But, when I came to the songs part, I was surprised to find a lot of SOB instead of the heavy dose of Songs of Yore your posts have. I checked the title again to see whether it was Food Day or Fool Day. 😉

Your songs included the basic items of daal and roti. So here is a song which says ‘deewana admi ko banati hain rotiayan’ – Kali Topi Lal Rumal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldqHUl6wjJQ

We cannot do without ‘laddoo’ on any auspicious occasion. There were good old times when ‘laddoos’ were distributed on birthdays.
‘Hum bhi agar bachche hote’ – Door Ki Awaj – Rafi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIpAUx73rME

But there was this old man who made a world tour by just having ‘do ghoont chai’.
Do ghoont chai pee – Sanjog – Rafi

But this hotel has other things including biscuit to offer with the real ‘chaai’.
Aao hamare hotel men – Kundan – SD Batish and Sudha Malhotra.

If there is a hotel then how come there is not a ‘chalta firta hotel’.
Aaya main laya chalta firta hotel – Naya Zamana – Manna Dey.

AK ji;

There is a fly in my soup….is the most complaint when it in a high end restaurant . When not satisfied the complaint becomes aggressive…Your waitress was miserable and so was your food !!.

When lacking meal-time inspiration, try turning your ear to music. Classic remains as delectable to the ears as ever. Tea and cana cona coffee has always been my favorite when visiting a reputed restaurant . Hotel Standard located over Cinema Regal used to give a very tasty Biscuit as a complementary with coffee. Juke Box was another attraction. For Four Aanaas one could hear their choicest songs . other hotels around had live music with best of crooners singing in a nice way…….yes swaying with rhythm and slow beats.

Here is a song….not from a high end hotel but from a street dhaaba like hotel…..

This one is ready to eat ‘rookhi sookhi’
Rookhi sookhi main kha loongi – Insaf – Hamida Bano and Rafi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJBWrO3F13o

Ice cream is the compulsory menu in modern parties and if Dev Anand sells it then who will refuse.
Zindagi hai kya sun meri jaan – Maya – Rafi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvK4JVLWCWk

Salad is also necessary as a food item. So what about ‘kakadi’ as a salad, especially if it is compared to ‘laila ki ungliyan’ or ‘majnu ki pasliyan’.
Laila ki ungliyan bechoon – Ghar Ki Laaj – Rafi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4uIC8EPGxI

If a ‘kabaadi wala’ comes on a camel to sell ‘khali dabba khali botal’ how can you relate him to food items. But, in the second antara he talks about a number of food items which may be spurious.
Khali dabba khali botal- Neel Kamal – Manna Dey.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYm8tLfK83E

I dont know if ‘paan’ is allowed as a food item here, but there is certainly a case for it. So I am posting the most famous song.
Paan khaye saiyan hamaro – Teesri Kasam – Asha Bhonsle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB3aGlSv95I

21 AK October 16, 2020 at 11:40 pm

Mr Joseph @9,
Raat ko khao piyo din ko aaram karo? There is no food item in this.

@11, 12,
It is impressive that you have discovered two songs on Andher nagri chaupat raja from the same year. The second song takes the second line of the idiom, ‘टके सेर भाजी टके सेर खाजा’ correctly, the first song changes a word keeping the meaning intact.

@13, 15, 17,
These are excellent’Food’ songs.

Ber is certainly a food item and she is selling the same.

Hans @16,
Thanks a lot. I am happy you enjoyed it. How nice it would be if every day was the April Fools’ Day, but sometimes we have to act serious. Sometimes Songs Of Bore fit perfectly with the theme.

The first two songs are well known and are perfect food songs. The third Do ghoont chai pee: I have never seen anyone getting so inebriated with chai. I am often in minority of one with my nimbu pani in the parties, when I have to act like them, but that is far short of this.

The fourth song Aao hamaare hotel mein is very joyous, but I am puzzled why Nimmi made a sad face when the song started. Did no one tell her that this was a different kind of scene?

@20,
Rookhi sookhi main kha lungi: This is a lovely song, we discussed in the review of songs of 1946. The charm is in the lady taking the initiative, “Paas bula lo more raja”. When the man expresses various difficulties, she proclaims that she will address it, she is even daring to persuade the ‘Daroga’ who was “Gusse ka Hitler”. A nice companion to first song in the post when the man proclaims his determination.

Zindagi hai kya sun meri jaan: Even as icecream thelawala Dev Anand is Dev Anand. It is hard to remember any role in which Dev Anand was not Dev Anand, but the character. I guess we all loved him for that.

Laila ki ungaliyan and Khali dabba khali botal are excellent songs.

Paan khaye sainya hamaro: If Bengalis can eat water – जल खाबो? – ‘paan’ has stronger case to be here.

@24,
Ras teri baaton ka chacolate: So far so good, but in the next line ‘zulf’ is compared with omelette. Everything goes with Johnny Walker?

Akji
A mouth watering multi-flavored and nutritious dish indeed. Our health minister says that we should now focus on nutrition for all. Your article does exactly the same for we, the readers of SOY.
Most of the food items I had in my mind are already posted above by Hansji , Josephji & Pradeep ji. Few crumbs left with me
1 munnubhai motor chale
– Phool khile hai Gulshan Gulshan
https://youtu.be/a4znENkB2d4
Where you go to Chowpati & inevitably eat bhel puri
2 aahe na bhar thandi thandi – Banphool
https://youtu.be/crzo7x07GTs
Though chai has lost some of its shine post demonetization , we will always love it, especially in winter & more so when served by Babita
3 Dekho maine dekha hai – Love story
https://youtu.be/q7iZe8GY8jw
Though there is no food item here there is rasoi and also there is pani
4 Na tum ho yaar aaloo – Dus numbri
Apart from aaloo & gobhi the song mentions hotel ka khana
https://youtu.be/S9SDWD0DjNQ
5 kha kar tu ne paan – Taxi driver
https://youtu.be/nmoxGZCTvik
Hansji has mentioned one paan song. Paan is definitely treated as a food item in my area ( people treat paan as staple food here) . In fact Don paan nahi khata tha? Bahut bura karta tha dialogue must have been written after seeing the paanlovers of this area. At Aurangabad there are pan shops bigger than departmental stores having endless variety of paans with fanciful names.

AKji,

A refreshingly different theme on the occasion of the World Food Day.
Very enjoyable and appetizing!!
Interesting to see some songs from the 1990s and 2000s making it to the list. of course, they fit the theme perfectly.

Dr. Shetty has posted one song from HAHK.

Here’s another one: Dulhe ki Saaliyo…..joote de do paise le lo
Lata, SPB – Ram Laxman – Ravindra Rawal
The second antara is replete with all the sweets…

kuchh thanda pi lo mood nahin hai
dahi bade lo mood nahin hai
kulfi kha lo bahut kha chuke
paan kha l0 bahut kha chuke
aji ras malaai aapke liye

Interesting theme AK. Your list is quite exhaustive. I had thought of two songs, but others beat me to them. I recall a ditty we used to sing as children. I thought it must be from a film or famous song, but Google fails to show anything:

हम लोगों ने आग जलायी धुआँ उड़ा आसमान में
आलू छीले गोभी काटी साग पका मैदान में।

Let’s enjoy our meals on this day.

A nice popular Marathi song on Poha from Sanai Chaughade 2008, well-sung by Sunidhi Chauhan
Composer – Avdhoot Gupte

आयुष्य हे चुलीवरल्या कढईतले कांदे पोहे
It compares life to Kande Pohe (soaked rice flakes with onion and other ingredients) being cooked in a pan.

Traditionally in Maharashtra, Kande Pohe is synonymous with the arranged marriage custom. It was the dish, offered to the prospective bride groom’s family when they came to see the girl.

SHEHNAI, 1947.

Aana meri jaan, meri jaan
Sunday ke Sunday

..
Tujhe brandy pilaoon
Tujhe whiskey pilaoon
Aur khilaoon
Murgi ke murgi ke andey..

Chitalkar. Meena Kapoor; P L Santtoshi, C Ramchandra.

The delightful tune inspired the National Egg Coordination Committee ad campaign..
Sunday ho ya Monday
Roz khao andey.

Dara Singh, Dharmendra etc were later seen in the subsequent ads.

And, then came the paisa vasool Andey ka Funda in JODI NUMBER 1… Sanjay Dutt and Govinda merrily dancing to

Aao sikha doon tumhe andey ka funda.

Pratik Joseph, Dev Kohli, Anand Raj Anand.

Without andey, no partiyan. No partiyan, no Aashiqui. No Aashiqui, no Zindagi.

Ghar ghar mein milti anda
Patna ho ya Bhatinda!

Zero bhi ek anda
Hero bhi ek anda!

Ande ki jaise duniya
Duniya ki jaise anda!

Anda is in
The O of omelette
Cho of chocolate
Ho of hotel…
….

TV mein bhi dikhaye ke roz khao anda.

The word Anda occurs more than a hundred times in this fun song.

Then there is the funny scene from KALIA where the nayi naveli dulhan Parveen Babi, who has no clue about how one breaks an egg, misreading the sign language instructions given by Amitabh Bachchan, breaks an egg on her forehead !

I remember my roommate in the hostel who used to break an egg on his head every Sunday morning for hair care. No egg shampoo for him. The egg itself, pure and organic!

SOUTEN

Anu Malik.

ZAMEEN

Chai, Chaiwala, Chai pe charcha became very relevant in our political landscape.

KS Bhatiaji @18,
‘Tea in a reputed restaurant’: I thought one has to be a millionaire to think of that. Even roadside tea in a spoon size cup today costs ₹10, unthinkable once. You and Hans are kindred souls. He also mentioned Aao hamaare hotel mein chai piyo ji garam garam.

@19,
Excellent food song. Shammi Kapoor makes it more interesting. The overall mood is serious.

@23,
The customers would be more interested in berryseller, than her berries. Nice song.

@25,
Maike se aa ja biwi re: Rafi is great in this funny song. Starts with Tasweer teri dil mera bahla na sakegi. I don’t think Talat Mahmood would have been amused. The man is desperate for return of his wife because he can no longer do jhadu-ponchna. In the Lockdown, ask any man, he would proudly say he did jhadu-ponchna.

Rookhi sookhi kha Gopala is a delightful song. The comedian seems to have traces of Mohan Choti.

Shamshad Begum has नमक in her voice as we can expect.

Lelo re lelo nariyal pani: Mumtaz is less interested in selling the coconuts than showing her figure.

42 AK October 17, 2020 at 2:29 pm

Mr Muli @27,
I don’t know whether our food habit is nutritious. Our most food songs too do not give much importance to balanced diet. For example, your additions:
#1. Bhel puri
2. Chai?
4. Hotel ka khana

#5 Paan: I thought Biharis were paan champions, if the walls of staircases, common areas are any indication. But good to hear that it is so special in Aurangabad.

43 AK October 17, 2020 at 2:32 pm

Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Dulhan ki sathiyo hare dupattewaliyo – I remembered it only as a ‘shoe’song, but thanks for reminding that it had a lot of food items too.

@29,
Nice discovery of two ice cream songs.

@33,
Amitabh Bachchan would forever be associated with paan. Shahrukh Khan has no chance, not his fault though. A classic should not be copied.

@37,
Bajrangi to sing Chicken kukdoo koo is height of harmony. Nice movie. But I forget the songs.

Ak ji;

As soon I listen to music , I ignore everything around me except food. My taste of music varies from platter to platter . Taste differs when I listen to sad songs . Good food basically that we have in our plate is a result of the immense amount of hard work that is put at various stages .

Thanks to Agriculture and Irrigation guys who put all their energy to satisfy our crunch and taste buds . From PL 480 …..we know are exporting Rice Onion and other vegetables to different countries . There was a time when many poor kids were lined up on roads and temples to eat or collect food.

This reminds me of an old song which we used to listen over Radio……

AK @ 26

I agree with you that some SOBs fit the theme perfectly. I mentioned as there were a lot of them. In the Kundan song Nimmi’s sad face is from the previous scene. This fun song was added, as is normally done in our films, to mitigate the effect of the sad and tense scene earlier.

The mukhda of the song ‘ye ras teri baton ka’ is
Ye ras teri baton ka chocholate,
ye jadoo teri ankhon ka omelette,
ye ghera teri zulfon ka baby dil ko gaya lapet.

So omelette is connected to her eyes. But, this is also a misfit unless he assumes her eyes as eggs. In the antara he compares her eyes with ‘Paris ki galiyan’. This song also highlights the fact that in hindi films, tukbandi is as old as the films itself.

This 1942 song is a referesher call for me . Sunder was really a talented actor/singer. Got little chance but his presence on screen itself was a treat ….specially for punjabis . he was very successful in punjabi movies …be it hero or supporting role . He acted and sang in Pukar under Kalyan ji Anand ji.

Thanks for bouquet of songs also.

Boot Polish movie and songs are my all time favorite. Seen many times in clips and in repeat modes . What a performance by Rattan Kumar , Naaz and David. Lyrics were great and so was composition ….and above all clear cut sound recording . I think David and Tarudutt won colavary award for best actor and photography respectively.

There is perhaps no other songs on food ….but I remember a very emotional scene where Rattan kumar is selling….Belu ke ber lelo .

When hunger strikes the poor ….heart ache for me.

Cooks have been the central characters in some of our movies.

BAWARCHI , the beautiful film with Kaka Khanna in the titular role and lovely Kaifi Azmi, Madan Mohan score has no food related songs, I think.

CHEENI KUM, had AB as the Chef and owner of an Indian restaurant in London. I have mentioned the title song.

RAMJI LONDONWALE, 2015, with R Madhavan was a remake of his Tamil film NALA DAMAYANTI.

Munna Dhiman, Vishal Bhardwaj.

Mausi ho ya mausa
Phoophi ho ya khala
Ramji ke paas hai sab ke liye Masala.

Bawarchi gharane se juda hai inke taare
Peedi dar peedi se Bawarchi hain saare

Kai saal khud uble hain tab kiya ubala
..
Ramji ke haath mein aisi hai kala

Woh mantra hai ke har shay mein jee bhar ke daalo pyar
Woh kya swad jo rooh ko na karde jaaykedaar?

Raghuveer Yadav has sung it well.

Gore Gore logon se ek bandhan bandhan ho gaya
Arre, Gaon ke ek chore ke dil London London ho gaya.

Ye Duniyadari achhi lagne lagi
Har bhaji taaji
Sabzi tarkari achhi pakne lagi
Meri daal toh hai galne lagi
Life mein tadka lag gayi
Ho dil Makhan Makhan ho gayi.

Sukhwinder Singh.

CHEF, 2018, Saif Ali Khan, was a remake of CHEF, 2014, Hollywood.

Kannada singer / composer Raghu Dixit scored the music.

Hai Fifty Fifty life mein
Bas thodi si kami
Chatpati kachodi mein
Bas chutney hi kami
Thoda hai thodi nahin
Rum hai par Cola nahin
….
Ye dil bole tan tan tan..

Mr Joseph @53,
Ana meri jaan meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday has been mentioned earlier. A nice egg-song.

@54,
Mujhe jo khilate hain paanon mein mirche is a fabulous song having some cultural significance. Putting chilli powder was a favourite practical joke to be played by the girl’s side on the groom. But Ashok Kumar seeks blessing for them.

@55.
Ye roti hai: The food thela is very well-equipped. But group dance at the thela?

@66,
Mera naam Abdul Rehman: ‘Pistawala main hun Pathan/ Khanewale ko dil hota gulgul’ – This song has become superb because of Kishore Kumar.

@67,
Badhai ho badhai janamdin ki humko – The children at the party are not bothered about the birthday boy, but the laddoos they would get.

@68,
Govinda ala re: Maakhanchor reference is not very prominent.

@69,
Chal chameli baag mein mewa khilaaunga: Nice song.

@70,
Great song again on baag-mewa from 1942.

AK ji ;

Yourself…..

There is one in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in USA, displaying some 20000 pairs of shakers…

I missed visiting Museum on salt and pepper . I had my family vacations there in 2012 and was grossed on Dollywood street attending some country music theaters and other attractions like wax museum etc. Gatlinburg, Tennessee is a great place to visit . The street itself is a treat to walk and enjoy mini theaters by the roads. Living in wooden cabins was awesome in smoky mountains….the most visited national park !!

AK ji , if booze is an accompany of a good food water should also be treated at par . Quenching thirst ….even drinking eye drops…..

Dr Deshpande @56,
Chanajor garam: We know at least three Chanajor garam songs about twenty years apart with each other, from Bandhan (1939), Naya Andaaz (1959), and Kranti (1981). An everlasting song, but I find the last song weakest.

@57,
Aa gaye aa gaye halwa wale aa gaye: The picturisation is very uplifting. The poor, starving children wait for the halwa man, who treats them to the halwa out of joy.

@ 59, 60,
Nice rasgulla songs. Maar gayi re rasgulla gulami ke is a poor parody of Maar gayo re more dil pe katari by Chitalkar and Shamshad Begum from Nadiya Ke Paar (1948). Rasgulle phat ke jalebi se lipat gaye: Really wild imagination.

@61,
Naam jalebi bai: Great Item song.

@75,
Roti roti roti fits very well with the socialist theme of the movie, though I have commented elsewhere that I found its socialism too preachy.

@76,
This is also an excellent intro-contra song too. Shamshad Begum is always above par.

@78,
Idli vada saambhar: Very mouth-watering.

@81,
A very popular song.

@82,
Paas no jinke ho roti: When we have fun with foods, it is nice to be reminded that some do not have दो जून की रोटी.

@83,
Chaat ho chaupati ki: Perfect combination.

97 AK October 18, 2020 at 5:53 pm

Mr Muli @58,
We cannot be sure that there is no other ‘fish’ song. But you have given us a good challenge.

98 AK October 18, 2020 at 6:17 pm

KS BhatiJi @63,
Amma roti de, baba roti de: The children begging makes me cringe. Such songs were common those days,it is good that they don’t show such songs now.

@64,
Chundariya katati jaaye re is a great song. In fact the movie and its music are everlasting classic.

@65,
Kismet ki hawa kabhi garam: C Ramchandra is terrific in such songs both as a singer and as a music director.

@91,
I would not include Uthaye ja unke sitam… aansoo piye ja in food songs.

@94,
Shree 420 had terrific songs. I was looking for more direct, and whacky food songs.

@95,
Both the songs of Kishore Kumar are too good.

Chhun chhun karti aayi chidiya, dal ka dana layi chidiya, kauwa bhi aaya’ – Ab Dilli Door Nahin – Rafi.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsL82QnlqlM

Murge ne jhoot bola from Manmauji contains, kauwa chidiya story of making khichdi in the second antara. Perhaps the kauwa in the previous song heard that chidiya has brought the daal ka dana, so he brought the chawal ka dana for the khichdi.

Machli is a food item and that is present and that will be a food item even if it is ‘sone ki machharia’ as in the Shehnai-1947 song ‘chhuk chhuk chhaiyan’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNTOBZw48wg

125 Hans October 19, 2020 at 4:58 pm

We can even look for contra songs in this food flood. The Anpadh-1962 song ‘sikander ne porus se ki thi ladai’ has in the antara ‘hai jahil Ghaseeta magar khaye halwa, ye har roj loote mithai ka jalwa. In the next antara MA is selling ‘karela’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmarDySZ0LQ

But this song from Guzara-1954 asks us to avoid ‘halwa’
Duniya ki halat naram naram – Rafi.

Mr Joseph @110,
Kabhi neem neem: Excellent song. AR Rahman gave a new kind of music which is very arresting.

@116,
Meri Mahua: I think Mahua here refers to the girl’s name.

@119,
Very suggestive song. I wonder how it escaped censors.

@120, 121, 122,
Nice hat-trick of anaar songs. The idiom is ‘Ek anaar sau beemar’, but if there are only two beemars, one has to adapt.

@126,
Excellent song.

141 AK October 20, 2020 at 7:40 am

KS Bhatiaji @118,
Leo ji Memsaab hamara pista bahut achchha: It was surprising to see such a westernised song from 1939. Possibly this could have been an inspiration for C Ramchandra for his Ana meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday.

142 AK October 20, 2020 at 7:51 am

Hans @121,
The three ‘Dana’ songs are excellent.

@124,
The search for a ‘machhali’ song as a food item is not over. ‘Raja ki talaiya mein sone ki machhariya’: Here ‘sone ki machhariya’ is an idiomatic expression. So was my addition, Aise tadapun ki jaise jal bin machhali.

@125,
Yes, food songs offer great opportunity for contra, intra-contra.

Dr Deshpande@128,
I think Lucknow too is famous for paan. Nice paan song.

@129,
There seems to be no end of halwa songs.

@131,
There are many songs we should not try to ‘understand’.

@132,
I am also inclined to ask, ye kya ho raha hai. Weird song.

@133,
A variant of ‘mirchi lagana’? So Shabana Azmi, too, is there. She was also in some cheap commercial films.

@134,
Perfect ‘Mumbaikar8’ song.

@135,
‘Sonpapadi’ – Nice song. No limit to imagination.

@136,
No limit again.

@137, 138,
Fabulous mithais from Delhi.

Mr Muli @130,
Now it seems for each food item we can have a plenty of songs.

@139,
Mera gadha gadhon ka leader: It must me a unique combination.

Cheel cheel chillake kajari sunaye: We have heard this song so many times, but hardly noticed that it has so many grocery items. It also has a few terms relating to music. And then I noticed Kishore Kumar slips in Baba man ki aankhen khol. This was his way of showing respect to the New Theatres stalwarts.

A dainty, gourmet fare on World Food Day! Can’t figure out how I missed it on Oct 16, but by the time I read it, most of the better known food songs from Hindi films had already been appropriated by Hans ji, Bhatia Ji, Joseph ji, Dr. Shetty, and Dr. Deshpande, among others. So, I had to resort to a Bhojpuri classic. After all, you begin with a Bhojpuri-Hindi ‘wrap’, and this Lata-Chitragupta wonder has not been posted yet.

Hans ji ;

In our youth we spent many hours dialing and searching stations of radios looking for our favorite songs . We knew far away some one was enjoying a song which our radio was not catching . The next step obviously was to see if areal was properly oriented. Felling silent on our grief we had to resort to move on to other sports like guuli and danda .

Time and again you have reminded me of your favorite ….Chhuran…that used to accompany Aam Paappad . Khatti reeti was anothe alternative that awakened the taste buds. Well here is a special song that reminds me of our moolie eating days during lunch breaks. Enjoy this song and have a nice flashback of eating Chhoran and Moolie that too in one paise only !!

AK @ 114

Yes the lockdown situation in big cities was really serious. In our area it was reverse. The vegetable growers who were not able to sell their produce in mandi were selling it cheaper than usual. We were producing most of the vegetables in our farm. But, there were sordid tales too. There was a poultry farm about 1 km from our house. It fell short of rations for the farm and labour ran away. The owner, one day, decided to do away with all his hen. People including children from the surrounding villages – who had no qualms about having them – had field day. We also saw dogs carrying the dead hen.

Even during lockdown people with reach had permits to move freely. One day a 4-wheeler came on our road with onions brought from Alwar Mandi. He was selling them at about Rs. 7/8 per kg. I asked him how he went to Alwar. He told that he took the steel pipes from a factory, the owner of which had organised a permit for him.

Canasya @156,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation.

Chitragupta is a legend for Bhojpuri film music. Since he took the mainstream playback singers, the Bhojpuri songs acquired mainstream popularity like any film song of the period. The new lot Khesari, Pawan, Nirahua are firing up Bhojpuri music, albeit a bit raunchy. If you treat appearance in Kapil Sharma show as a measure of popularity, they have arrived. I though starting the post with Khesari was most befitting.

Mumbaikar8 @168,
फीका as in ‘saltless’ or ‘less salt’? You would agree the first song is quite chatpata.

Gud ki dali: Depends whether you have a sweet tooth. Many people do not like sweet taste. But I like this song, difficult to choose between Bipasha Basu and Helen.

Meethi meethi baaton se bachna zara: It is a good advisory, err on the safer side, why take chances even with sugary talk. Had people heeded we would have been in a much better situation.

Baaman ho ya jaat bhikhari and Pandit ho ya lala are today politically incorrect. I don’t think these will pass Censor today. But I like the songs though.

Naram naram garam garam is a nice song.

Choona lagana: If you are asking for it’s idiomatic meaning, it means the same thing which you are hinting. These days online choona lagana has become very common. And the kind of people who fall prey and the manner in which someone lagaaoes choona, you hardly feel sympathy for the victims.

Door desh se aaya dekho, aaya mithaiwala is an excellent song.

As per HFGK this song is sung by Chitalkar. In the posted song the voice is not that of Chitalkar. I also saw some portions of the film available on the youtube. Bhatiaji, @ 158

The ‘chooran’ song is a great find for me. I had not heard this one. In this the female is selling ‘mooli’. The prices of those days are revealing. One paisa for ‘chooran’ and one paisa for 3 moolis. ‘Chooran’ contains ‘chaar namak chaubees masale’. Both of them are mentioning who likes their things. In the end they agree that both the things are ‘namkeen’. This song was precursor of the Naya Andaz – 1956 song by Shamshad and Kishore where they sold ‘chana jor garam’, ‘moongfali’, ‘gannerian’ and ‘jalebiyan’. This song was posted by Josephji at 13.

In 1962 when I was in 4th class, we used to get this ‘chooran’ in one paisa, the quantity must have been reduced than what they gave in 40s. In those days there were also ‘budhi ke baal’ which were sold at very low rates. There was also a thick gel like thing, which the hawker brought on a pole which also had colourful paper flags on small ’tilis’. He would stick this thing on the flag post which was a ’tili’ give to us. We took it as much for the flag as its taste. Can you remember the name of that gel like thing.

181 Hans October 23, 2020 at 1:28 pm

Bhatiaji,

Here are two panjabi songs for you on the food theme. The first one is ‘bajre da sitta’, the well known folk song sung by the great Surinder Kaur and her sister. This song inspired the song ‘agre ka lala angregi dulhan laya re’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy-cNCWOXgw

‘The second is ‘tere kanak di raakhi mundya hun main nahin o behandi’ from Do Lachhiyan – 1959. The singers are Shamshad and Rafi and MD is as usual Hans Raj Behl.

Your ‘gud ki dali’ reminded me of the ‘misri ki dali’ Rekha whom Navin Nischal also called ‘gulabi kali’.
Sun sun sun o gulabi kali – Sawan Bhadon – Rafi and Asha
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmxAeVb75Ww

Navin Nischal also reminds me the song ‘O ladke makhan se’ from Ganga Tera Pani Amrit, sung by Asha.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfXRKnkwYzk

Long back I listened to this song ‘chutney kaise bani’ in a marriage. People were dancing without understanding anything of lyrics. Now I know this is not from a film. But this song has a similar effect as ‘gud ki dali’ enacted by Helen. The song has very strange lyrics unrelated to the mukhda. The mukhda is ‘kaise bani kaise bani phulori bin chutney kaise bani. To my understanding phulori means besan ki pakodi.

This post in continuation with the contra songs and dream songs posts has shown that there is no equal to the SOYers in digging out songs on any theme. There have been all type of songs, from simple food songs to those where the food item has been embedded beautifully in the lyrics. I have not seen the songs from lyricist’s point of view, so I dont know whether there is any song by Bharat Vyas in the already posted songs. But, Bharat Vyas was the one who used food items very cleverly in the songs. I had posted one song of this category in the post on him. I am again posting it here, as it is one of my favourites.

Hum rehne wala hai ji Bikaner ka – Shamshad – Lalkar 1956.

There is another song ‘aaye ban ke chhabeele chhail’ from the same film, Lalkar. MD is Sanmukh Babu.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbmD71JNNK8

Here is another fine song by Bharat Vyas. This time composed by Anil Biswas for film Badi Bahoo and sung by Surinder Kaur. The song is ‘duniya se nyari gori teri sasural hai’.

185 AK October 23, 2020 at 3:56 pm

Hans @183,
I limit myself to Phulauri bin chutney kaise bani. This is a Bhojpuri song. Since it is a traditional folk song, I didn’t give much attention to it except taking it for granted that it must be of great antiquity. Now that you mention it, I searched some more. I remember that it was used in Dabang 2, again not taking much notice of it, except its picturisation and Salman Khan’s dance. There are a number of Bhojpuri links of this song on the YT, and has become the current norm, some quite raunchy. Richard Singer had sometime back posted about ‘Chutney Music‘ on his blog. This is the name given to a unique genre of Indo-Caribbean music, which is a mix of Bhojpuri traditional songs with local music, and is very popular in several Caribbean countries and South Africa. I also find that Phulauri bin chutney is a famous album (1976) of Tirindad-Tobago singer Sundar Popo. He must have used a traditional tune, most likely it was not his original composition. And to add to the mystique, a Bhojpuri film of that name has also been made.

Folk has a way of tying up several knots. The same seems to be the case with this song.

As for its meaning, Mr Google says it means what good is phulauri without chutney. This is literally not correct, but it makes sense. (You are right, phulauri is besan pakori).

Literally ‘bani’ is a form of the verb ‘बनना’, in the sense of you make curd from milk and so on. If you add ‘बिन’ with ‘pulauri’ the sentence would mean, ‘How can you make chutney without pulauri’. if you consider ‘बिन’ with chutney, the song would mean, ‘How can you make phulauri without chutney?’ You can interpret it not as an ingredient, but a necessary accompaniment to go with phulauri. You are not going to make phulauri without making chutney too.

186 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty October 23, 2020 at 5:15 pm

Hans hi, AK ji,

A chutney song from one of the last movies of Shankar Jaikishan, PAAPI PET KA SAWAL HAI, 1987.
Voice and lyrics : Dr Prabha Thakur.

Mose Chutney pisave…

Ann paani na bhave
Saari rata neend na aave. .

The movie opens with a desperate widow clutching her bhooka, pyaasa child to her bossom and roaming in search of food, all the while the child pleading for Paani, Roti repeatedly. There are multiple references to Roti in the first fewminutes and also throughout the movie.

The movie’s title song…

Bol Madari…

Paapi pet ka sawal hai

Roti se bachke nikle
..Zamane mein kisiki majaal nahin. .

Ye bachke…doodh chod. .

Iski Roti cheene , uski Roti cheene..

Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar.

Jab dushman ho gaya waqt
Waqt se ladna hi hoga..

Tujhe nahin maloom ke Roti
Kya kya khel dikhaye
Sabkuchh lut jaata hai
Jab ye bhookh hosh mein aaye. .

Ye Roti hai karz,
Karz toh bharna hi hoga…

Kishore Kumar.

188 Hans October 23, 2020 at 9:09 pm

AK,

When I searched for the link, there were Bhojpuri songs which suggested this was some Bhojpuri folk, but, I had no inkling that this is so old. Thanks for all the information relating to the song. Though I knew the meaning of the mukhda, but your detailed description would be helpful for others who may not know. Some persons eat pakodi without chutney and I am one of them. Also there are chutneys which are used with foods other than pakodis.

Mahatma 1953 was made in both Hindi and Marathi.

The chikki song is present in the Marathi version as aali aali re gaadi majhi chikki chi gaadi.

On YT, the Hindi version available is actually the dubbed Marathi one. That’s why it does not sound original.

Chitalkar is mentioned as a playback singer in the Marathi version also.

Mr Muli @179,
I have to especially thank you for the parody medley song from Laakhon Mein Ek. As I was thinking this is a family medley of father-son duo songs, I was struck by a small portion for Pankaj Mullick’s Chale pawan ki chaal and the tune of Ayi bahaar aaj, ayi bahaar. It is quite common to find parodies of K L Saigal, and often K C Dey too, but Pankaj Mullick is quite rare. The only other instance I have found is Sundar naari preetam pyari in Kishore Kumar’s Gunijanon re bhaktajanon.

Hansji
Title of another film of Rajesh Khanna mandated that there should be food songs in it. The film is Roti and I remember that its advertizement carried this line
” Others have many stars , Roti has superstar.”
This was in response to the advertise of Roti ,kapada aur Makan.
Roti has 2 food songs
1 ye jo public hai
https://youtu.be/jBF-PNFKzbM
2 Nach meri bulbul
https://youtu.be/C6JlLpmncz8
Both being run of the mill yet
hugely popular songs.
There was another film titled Roti which came in 1942 , the composer was Anil Biswas. The film had as many as 14 songs of which 7 were sung by Akhtari bai ( Begum Akhtar) & 3 by Sitaradevi. Needless to add that I leaned about this movie first time when I was searching the lyrics of relatively fresh roti ( 1974) . At least 2 songs had food items. One of them is
Kyun ratata hai roti roti

I looked up Mose chutney pisave. A delightful song. Nice to hear a completely new voice, she might be a folk singer.

Mose chutney pisave lyrics and sung by Dr Prabha Thankur from Paapi Pet Ka Sawal Hai (1987), music Shankar Jaikishan

Hans @184,
Shamshad Begum’s Hum rahnewale hain ji Bikaner ke is too good Same with Surinder Kaur.

@189,
Rafi one could imagine stuttering for effect, but Hemant Kumar doing it is really special.

@190,
Chalo chalo chalein hum babool ke tale is an absolutely marvellous song by Guru-Chela combination. It bears the signature melody of S N Tripathi and Chitragupta, though in an film based on Arabian Nights tale. The other two songs are also nice songs. Now we can post a challenge to the readers, find a movie which had four or more food songs.

@193,
Very interesting songs. ‘Sabzi fight‘: Almost all films have a scene of vegetable thela being overturned in action scene, but this must be the only one in which a fight breaks out (leading to romance).

From where do you search these songs? We know Daal mein kuchh kala, this is the first time one gets Daal mein kuchh peela. What should it mean? Yellow is the natural colour of daal, except when it is black daal.

@198,
You have some search engine! Dekho dekho gadbad ghotala again, but now it is Daal mein hai kuchh kala as it should be.

@199,
O laddoo khanewale: Laddoo, pede was OK, but it seems there was no reservation about smoking cigarette then.

Dr Deshpande(192) & Mumbaikar8(194),

Thanks for the additional information. The Marathi movie has the original voices of Jagirdar and David, the two main characters of the film. In the Hindi version on youtube the voices are different. There is one more question. HFGK mentions the MDs as Vasant Pawar and Ram Wadhavkar, while in the titles the names given are Vasant Pawar and Ram Washikar. Did this second composer use both the surnames Wadhavkar and Washikar.

214 Hans October 25, 2020 at 8:05 pm

Reference Josephji’s songs @197 and 198 and AK’s response @ 207

The song @ 198 ‘dekho dekho gadbad ghotala, dal men hai kuchh kala’ was a big hit from CR’s film Sangram, 1950. The song @ 197 is just a parody song. The lyrics have even been changed to ‘dekho dekho gadbad ghotila’ to match with ‘daal men hai peela’. If you listen to the full song, you will find that the famous Shamshad song ‘tamtam se jhanko na rani ji’ has also been parodied as below:
‘ghar se na bhago o raniji, gaanv men naak kat jayegi,
nindiya se jago o raniji, izzat tumhari ghat jayegi.’

There was another food song in that film ‘tarkari le lo, malan to aayi bikaner se’ sung by Asha Bhosle and Khan Mastana, composed by Khan Mastana and written by Wali Sahab.

I have seen all the three films you mentioned having Roti in it. All are different as films and all were successful. The 1942 film had one more song where Roti was mentioned. ‘Reham na khana’ sung by the same Ashraf Khan, who sang ‘kyun ratata roti roti’.

216 Dr. Rajesh Deshpande October 25, 2020 at 11:33 pm

Looks like Ram Wadhavkar used the surname Washikar only for Mahatma 1953.
For another Hindi – Marathi movie titled Chimni Pakhre/Nanhe Munne made in 1952 as well as Marathi movie Aboli 1953, he used the surname Wadhavkar.

For Hindi movies such as Suhaagan, Kalaakaar, Saavdhan all made in 1954, he and Vasant Pawar composed music under the name Vasant – Ramchandra.

Interestingly, all these movies were produced by Datta Dharmadhikari.

Great connect with the Saajan song. The style of song used in ‘resham ki dori’ is from panjabi folk ‘boliyan’ where song is continued by using similarly rhyming words. In old times, people in Panjab used to sit and create on the spot songs using the same words which the starting person used, like the antakhshari game. The most famous of boliyan started with the words ‘bari barsin khatan gaya si’. I am posting one famous song which is not from a film. It has some other forms also of folk.

Nice theory of political economy. Roti is the responsibility of the government, but you to buy कपड़ा from the pavement hawkers – everyone cannot afford to go into branded shops.

@210,
Tu makke de roti, main sarson da saag: I am scratching my brains to understand the connection.

@211,
Mohabbat hai mirchi: A raunchy Item Song. What struck me that the film is adapted from Charade. Charate is a classic suspense thriller, often described as the best Hitchcock film which he did not make. It is available on Prime Video. I would strongly recommend it. Its so called Hindi adaptation sank without a trace, but the Item song was heard quite often.

Canasya,
We read the story that a hen used to lay golden egg everyday and some greedy person wanted to tear her belly to get all the eggs at once. Amitabh Bachchan narrated this to Madan Puri in Deewaar, and he understood the point. That would mean that there was a hen first in whose belly there was a stock of eggs. But I agree with you, why debate this point.

Beimaan infamously won Filmfare for the best composer, brushing aside Pakeezah. Apart from the title song & ye rakhi bandhan hai , I do not Renner any other song of the film becoming very popular those days. But this song mentioning Kabuli badam has few unusual features.
It is sung by Kishor Kumar & Mahindra kapoor which was a rare combination those days. Then voice of KK is used for Pran and that of Mahendra Kapoor for the hero ( obviously as the hero is Manoj) . The song mentions names of heros ( but no Manoj) & heroines including Rakhee . It also includes names of Rafi & Mahendra and this must be the only song to have that feature.

We had heard of ‘Ek to karela, dooje neem chadha’. But lauki? It is not regarded as bitter. Misplaced metaphor, but everything goes. This is also a good ‘star’, i.e. self-reference song. The girl mocks he thinks he looks like Salman Khan, and he restores the girl thinks herself to be Karishma.

AK ji, Hans Ji;

Good bread is the great need in poor homes….and when it is served to poor in his hands….its a great feeling for the giver and receiver . Tears and smiles they convey are always heart touching. It is also best appreciated luxury in the homes of the very rich when served on a gold plated plates . Tastes and feelings differs here……..as no tears are shed and mind always goes to designers cuttleries surrounding the buffet dishes .

My mind goes to beautiful scene enacted by Raj Kapoor in Awara…. just before the famous song ….Awara Hoon. Raj [ as Shashi ] is in jail caught stealing Roti and as he receive Roti he start laughing …a scene that is superimposed on Raj who as an adult is in jail and is laughing again on recieving Roti. The dialogue that followed are great……Kambhakt yeh roti bhi kya chheze hai. havaldar sahib agar yeh roti mujhe jail ke baar mil jaati to mere jail ke aane jaane ke kabhi chhakar na hote…. .

Just watch the clip now and see the beautiful scenes and dialogues to watch the directors amazing midas touch !!!

Thanks for visiting and for your appreciation. The Tamil version of the song is equally good. For this song I watched the Telugu version of the song on YT. Hearing both, it seems to me Telugu is closer to Sanskrit than Tamil is. Somehow my impression was the reverse.

246 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty November 15, 2020 at 11:36 am

Ashwin ji, AK ji,

Vivaha Bhojanambu was based on the song of same opening lines from the movie MAYA BAZAAR, 1936, which, in turn, was inspired by THE LAUGHING POLICEMAN ,1922, by Charles Penrose, under the pseudonym of Charles Jolly. This was a makeover of the 1897 recording for Colombia Phonograph Company by George W Johnson, the first African American recording artiste… THE LAUGHING SONG.

Ashwin ji will surely recall the hugely popular
Vivaha Bhojanavidu … From the Kannada remake in 1965. Madhava Peddi was the singer.

247 ksbhatia November 16, 2020 at 11:43 pm

AK ji;

Thanks for your appreciation . Good songs and good music are always thought provoking . Besides the composition of…. awara hoon….the lyrics too are very thoughtful . Shailendra had surely wonder heart that goes deep into character to look out for their inner selves. At 35000 feet above the land …he imagined ….ghar bhar nahin sansar nahin mujhse kisiko pyar nahin… bejaan nagar anjan dagar ka pyara hoon ..awara hoon [ himself imagining as cloud ] . Now cloud is like a cotton [ rooyi] which is form less and is full of voids , small and big holes and appears as jakhams . And he writes ……abbad nahi barbaad sahi gatahun khusshi ke geet magar , jakhmoan se bhara seena hai mera hansti hai magar yeh mast nazar . Now who has …chhalni kiya…my seena or chest ? …duniya it is either you down there or god you up there ….??///…duniya yeh tere teer ka ya taqdeer ka mara hoon …Awara Hoon.

Many times I have listened to this and many other songs of Shailendra and I have a definate feeling that his songs are very well connected to God …as we listen to Bhajans , Kirtan and Gurubani ….all in his own styles for this wonderful connection . In …chali kaun se desh…from Boot Polish…the song very well relates to both the worlds . A truly masters touch !!!

Bhatiaji @ 249:

Your comments often unlock fresh series of songs in our mind. I usually refrain from posting them because I know that it is only a matter of time before you will post them with added poetic embellishments which I am incapable of. But sometimes I make an exception. So, here is a song with the words ‘masala’, ‘aalu’, etc. in the last antaraa:

‘Babu aana sunte jaana’ (KK and AB in Jhumroo; MD: KK)

KS Bhatiaji @247,
We can only clap in appreciation of your poetic wanderings.

@248,
Last sentence: Perhaps the scene you are describing is in the ‘Gold Rush’. But the point is well-taken.

@249,
Dev Anand is still Dev Anand even as ice cream seller.

AK ji @248;

Yes , charlie chaplin film scene is from Gold Rush and not from Modern Times . Thanks for correction .

Canasya ji @250;

Enjoyed listening to fast composition…Babu aana sunte jaana….from Jhumroo.

Yes, I try to post my views as I enjoy the accompanying visual art along with song ….like pre scenes before preludes and post scenes after postludes. Synchronization of ears , eyes and mind itself is a god’s greatest gift and that makes a reason for going into Directors mind too….how he and other conceives a scene !

Dr Rajesh ji had posted a song from ROTI, 1942.
Here is a second one.

Reham na khana
Hai makkar zamana…
….
Dukhiya durbal cheen le Roti
Haath marod ke cheen le Roti…

Safdar Aah, Anil Biswas.
Almost every site credit it to Akhtari Bai Faizabadi ( Begum Akhtar ). But, I strongly feel it is Ashraf Khan.
Over to the experts.

AK ji;

When Home smells good Wife has to be in kitchen with local and not online order . I look handsome when I look at the good food served with nice table wares over my world famous red coloured check dinning table cloth . I just want someone to look at me the way I look at food. We all goes animal over cone Ice Cream licking every drop of cream…nothing left over but repenting the drops that fell on floor !!!

Its really a great fantasy to imagine food that find way into great food journals ….touching the glossy fotos itself is a great feeling . All are temporary but chocolates are for ever.

Things worth having are worth waiting too. In 50s our mother used to cook everything on coal based clay aanghithiies ….some on slow cooking modes that smelled and tasted much better than todays gadgets lying…or rather decorated in modern cubicles called kitchens. It was really a fun accompanying mother to get to buy raw mirchi and masalas and getting them grind at home .

No song matches my imaginations than this song that list out many mirch masalas , vegetables and even duniya and chawal !!! Listen and enjoy this song to your heart content…..

ksbhatia Pa ji,

What an enjoyable song !

Changing track, Punjab never ceases amazing me with it’s cultures and traditions.

Early 90s, DD broadcast a serial SANJA CHULHA. Well made.

The title track..
Shukr ae Rabba
Sanja Chulha…
By Reshma is available on the YouTube.

263 ksbhatia November 21, 2020 at 11:05 pm

Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty @262; AK ji;

SANJA CHULHA.restaurants / hotels / Road side Dhabas…are now famous every where ….be it delhi , be it punjab or even canada . Earlier there was …Sheer e Punjab ….which I could locate in Andhra and Tamil Nadu also . Aaloo ka parontha is most favored one in combo with curd and Lassi . Of course Makki ki Roti and Sarsoan ka Saag is even served in best of starred hotels too.

Skinny Rotis and Kadak Tandoori Rotis are the national bread of this country . half a roti is enough to die down ones appetite . Full Roti is like Gold mine for the poor . One can eat anything in the morning but lunch and dinner has to be decorated with nice made rotis.

Now a few more songs on Roti …chatni and masalas….

KS Bhatiaji @261,
“Things worth having are worth waiting too.” Beautiful line and lovely way of recalling. Nice song of a variety of food items.

@263,
So true. In case of deprivation even a piece of roti is such a coveted thing.

265 ksbhatia November 23, 2020 at 12:22 am

Ak ji ;

Thanks once again for your complement….that encourage me to write and open my thoughts more often.

It is strange that on october 16th we celebrate world food day and next very day on 17th october we observe world poverty day !! Of course year theme for celebrations or observations changes ; but fact remains that 20,000 dies each day because of hunger. Debates are un ending . Still everyone try their best …and that is a positive note irrespective of they having succeeded or not.

Tears streaming down the poor eyes is really a sight that pains me. When you lose some thing you can not replace . Letting it not go waste tears tastes salty….and may those salted fragments ignite their bones for a little strenghth .

Next to poors are the Orphans that are left to shape their own destiny. What could be the worse when one is handicapped too. They need the love utmost and kind. What is their worth no body knows . A little love and extending helping hand is what they want.

Once upon a time I was listening to X Mas songs for the poor during December 82 over night time AIR programme that was dedicated to poor child . Amongst the several songs , the two that touched my heart were…..1. Smash your bottles on the grave yard …and 2. I am no body’s child . That had great impact on me and their after we in our family always saved 10 percent of our earning for the poors and are still maintaining the accounts for the beterment of poors. Teaching poor children itself gives us lots of bliss and blessings .

The song that we all must listen to…and see if you can hold your tears.

KS Bhatiaji,
Nobod child’ is an extremely moving song. Thanks for sharing it.

The pandemic has created an unprecedented dilemma for the poor. It has to be full unlockdown to enable them to earn their daily bread. But now we are at the community transmission stage which is most deadly. Anyone of us could be a carrier and anyone can be infected. Earlier the debate was between life versus livelihood. Are we now at a stage when you are damned if you do it, and you are damned if you don’t do it? And the poor are the most vulnerable. Some of us are privileged to be able to live in comfort while remaining confined.

It was heartening to read your comments which showed an empathetic heart for the poor and you are contributing from your side for their welfare.

Venkatraman ji, Rangan ji , AK ji ‘ Hans Ji;

Missing quite of you this winter . If one is feeling cold eating fruits ….well try Dry fruits as a good company while writing comments or posts !

We all have a hungry heart . Blessed are those who are still maintaining good dental care . Dr. Shetty ….am I right ?

A good taste always travels to stomach via heart …and before that… taste buds are the ones who wish to dance to the beats of heart. Servants wait for their masters nodes and smiles waiting for complements when food is delicious . Though there is no sensual dimensions to it but great food always gets star ratings. With limited outings now a days , I am sure…. Bon Appetite ….overtakes …Bon Voyage !!

AK ji @266;

I entirely agree to your comments. In this situation even the helping hands are helpless. Still helping other people can be cure….not just for those who needs …..but for curing our own souls too. In today’s condition use one hand to help others and second to help yourself and your own family . Care is really call of the challenging TIME.

AK ji;

Sitting on my dinning chair my eyes were focused on salt and pepper , appreciating the designs of the small containers , I was constantly getting distracted by the aromas from the kitchen that filled the room with melting butter, grilled vegetables and sharp spices. All of them together were better than any of the restaurant smells . Immediately I switched off the chimney and started enjoying the thick smoke fully embracing me with warm arms.

How the farmers have put in their so hard work …..giving their dividends to us ….to enjoy our platter. I salute all those working in Agriculture and irrigation sectors who planned future for all of us to stay happy and not hungry.

I salute all those who ….with their tiny shops do good work ….so that their small kitchen are not deprived of Bread and butter.

Coming to songs I think with tiny shop….Boot Polish , Tel Malish wins the title .

KS Bhatiaji,
Nice recall. Paan could be an independent theme. It has so much cultural context from SDB, to Paan khaye sainya hamaro, to Shammi Kapoo’s Paan Masala commercial.
