Surrogate Songs

Le ke pahla pahla pyarMusic and dance became an integral part of our films right from the first talkies, as our sources for initial films were Parsi Theatre, or Marathi Natya Sangeet which had music galore, or Mythologicals in which apsaras entertained in the Devlok. These gradually evolved into usual romantic stories, with a third angle thrown in at times, or villains who put spoke in the wheel. This gave rise to the lead actors expressing love with songs – solos and duets – and songs of despair and separation when the affair went off-track.

But at times the lead couple were too inhibited to express their feelings openly though there was music and dance in their hearts; or they were conflicted about their emotions – in such situations the tension was resolved by small-time actors who danced and sung with abandon. The purpose of such songs was really to focus on the lead actors who were quietly enjoying the song and dance, wishing in their hearts they could do it themselves.

Surrogacy in childbirth is a complex affair, requiring state regulation and laws with regard to confidentiality, parentage, and legal rights of the parties involved. Despite the best legal framework in place, there are tensions and emotional trauma, because it involves a biological mother who has to carry the embryo for nine months in her womb, knowing that she has to give it away to another person for good. The Surrogate Songs have no such problem. They give unalloyed joy to the parties to the proceedings, the voyeurs, the viewers and the listeners.

It is natural that a number of such songs have already figured on this blog. A keen reader Rakesh Srivastava drew my pointed attention to one such song I had posted in Hemant Kumar’s duets with ‘other’ singers, and requested me to write a full post on such songs. I remember a discussion earlier when S Joseph suggested some theme, and Hans Jakhar wrote, “AK must be listening”. Rakeshji made sure that I not only listened to him, but he also reminded me from time to time so that I didn’t forget. He also helped me with a list of surrogate songs. Rakeshji is among the readers who, besides commenting on the posts, also writes to me from which many new ideas emerge.

I remember our fellow blogger and an SoY regular, Anu (Conversations over chai) has also written on similar songs under a different title, and I had then commented on her post that an appropriate title would be ‘We feel, You sing’. With this exchange in my memory, I had no plans to write on this theme, but a promise made to a reader is a debt unpaid. ‘We feel, You sing’ has a nice cadence to it, and it was my phrase, but I felt having once shared it with Anu on her blog, she also has some right over it. I settled with Rakeshji on ‘Surrogate Songs’ – though somewhat bland and legalistic, it perfectly describes what we want to say.

Here are some nice surrogate songs, with special thanks to Rakeshji.

1. Chaahe nain churaao chaahe daaman bachaao pyar hoke rahega by Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar from Aas (1953), lyrics Shailendra, music Shankar-Jaikishan

Public Display of Affection (PDA) was not a done thing for decent people. Therefore, we can empathise with the shy lead couple Shekhar and Kamini Kaushal. But the minor characters (identified as SK Prem and Chanda Bai by Rakeshji) from the fishermen’s colony have no such inhibitions. They dance with gay abandon. As the song gathers steam, the hero too gathers courage to pull his shy bride towards him, and later another old couple from the fishermen’s community watching the dance from the sidelines look at each other with love-filled eyes. This song has been my one of the top Talat-Lata duets, and has been discussed in an earlier post. I am not surprised that it was at the top of Rakeshji’s list too. The two dancers deserve our unstinted praise. The picturisation is superb, and SJ show that their genius was not limited to RK films. A perfect ‘surrogate song’ to start the post with.

2. Chali Radhe Rani ankhiyon mein paani apane Mohan se mukhada mod ke by Manna Dey from Parineeta (1953), lyrics Bharat Vyas, music Arun Kumar Mukherji

Parineeta, based on Sarat Chandra’s novel, and directed by Bimal Roy, is a sweet love story between the poor Lalita and her neighbour Shekhar, the son of a rich zamindar. It is a perennial favourite of the readers and filmmakers. It was remade into yet another successful version in 2005 starring Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan. In this song from Bimal Roy’s version, there is some tiff between Lalita (played by Meena Kumari) and Shekhar (Ashok Kumar). Taking this as the usual quarrel between the two lovers, an old beggar (Radhe Shyam) appears and sings a Baul-style song in a joyous tempo, addressed to the Khandita Nayika:

मान भरी अभिमान भरी निर्मोही से नाता तोड़ के
अपने मोहन से मुखड़ा मोड़ के
चली राधे रानी अँखियों में पानी

But in the second part of the song, the same beggar again appears and realises that the situation has become serious. Manna Dey’s voice acquires a poignant tone befitting the lyrics of Bharat Vyas, Leaving behind the pranks of the childhood, and leaving behind those forest tracks of Gokul, a teary-eyed Radhe goes away.

2. Aan milo aan milo Shyam Saanware, Brij mein akeli Radhe khoi khoi si re by Manna Dey and Geeta Dutt from Devdas (1955), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music SD Burman

Two years down the line, Bimal Roy uses Baul style again as a surrogate song to great effect. Manna Dey’s voice is very suited to this style, and Geeta Dutt joins in this duet. As the child Paro (Baby Naaz) is sitting alone in the mangrove, contemplating about her love for Devdas, the Baul singers (played by Nana Palsikar and Dulari) pass by, and looking at her they start singing the song of Radha’s yearning for Krishna. I marvel at the art of Bimal Roy and the poetry of Sahir Ludhiyanavi how the imagery of lonely Radha, sitting lost in Brij, perfectly matches with the facial expression of a lonely Paro sitting in the vast mangrove. I once mentioned that every frame of Bimal Roy’s Devdas has a picture-postcard beauty, and it is poetry on celluloid. And let me venture to suggest, Baul songs are ideally suited as surrogate songs, and Manna Dey is a perfect Baul singer.

3. Le ke pehla pehla pyar bhar ke ankhon mein khumar by Rafi and Shamshad Begum from CID (1956), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music OP Nayyar

The debonair Dev Anand is in a playful romantic mood, but for some reason Shakila is thoroughly put off and is walking away from him. If he tries to come close to mollify her, it would only irritate her further. In this dilemma the street singers (played by Sheila Vaz and Shyam Kapoor) come as a godsend. The lady dancer-singer perfectly understands the situation, and confronts Shakila upfront with brazen lyrics like:

मुखड़े पे डाले हुए ज़ुल्फों की बदली
चली बलखाती कहाँ रुक जा ओ पगली
नैनों वाली तेरे द्वार ले के सपने हज़ार
जादूनगरी से आया है कोई जादूगर
ले के पहला पहला प्यार..

‘O haughty crazy woman! This enchanter has come from the Magic Kingdom with thousand dreams of the first love for you.’ This surrogate song is far from delicate or sympathetic; the dancer further accosts Shakila with चाहे कोई चमके जी चाहे कोई बरसे, बचना है मुश्किल पिया जादूगर से/ देगा ऐस मंतर मार, आखिर होगी तेरी हार/ जादूनगरी से आया है कोई जादूगर (Whether you thunder or pour, it is difficult to escape from this enchanter. He would cast such a spell on you that you would ultimately surrender, because he has come from the Magic Kingdom). And sure enough in another part of the song, Shakila is turning restlessly as she is surprised how she has melted for the enchanter:

उसकी दीवानी हाय कहूँ कैसे हो गई
जादूगर चला गया मैं तो यहाँ खो गई
नैना जैसे हुए चार गया दिल का क़रार
जादूनगरी से आया है कोई जादूगर..

This part of the song (with Shakila lip-synching Asha Bhosle) is not surrogate. But the Part 1, i.e. Rafi-Shamshad Begum duet is an excellent surrogate song, sung in a brazen, in-your-face style. Hats off to Majrooh Sultanpuri and OP Nayyar.

4. Ulajh gaye do naina by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Ek Saal (1959), lyrics and music Ravi

Ashok Kumar and Madhubala are in an intensely romantic mood, they are just not able to cross that little reserve. When the boatman and his lady sing this song, they are relieved that at least they are giving full expression to their feelings. Ravi’s mentor Hemant Kumar was ever willing to sing for him, and all the songs the combination produced turned out to be gold. Ravi wrote lyrics for many songs. This one is as sweet as the tune he composed. Ek Saal is famous for Talat Mahmood’s iconic song Sab kuchh luta ke hosh mein aye to kya kiya, which also happens to be a surrogate song in which Ashok Kumar’s mirror image is reflecting the agony of a guilt-ridden man.

5. Bichhade huye milenge phir kismet ne gar mila diya by Rafi and Asha Bhosle from Post Box 999 (1958), lyrics PL Santoshi, music Kalyanji-Virji Shah

The street dancer-singers are watched by Sunil Dutt and Shakila in a crowd. Shakila again doess her typical hard-to-please act, with Sunil Dutt watching  her with a smile. But there is also the quintessential mother Leela Chitnis in the crowd craning her neck to look for a long-lost one, and the song gives hope that those once separated would surely meet. An excellent surrogate song sung by Rafi and Asha Bhosle, with message to two separate sets of people(?). This was Kalyanji’s one of the earliest compositions before he joined his brother Anandji to form the duo Kalyanji-Anandji. This film had two more superb duets: O neend na mujhko aye, dil mera ghabaraye by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, and Mere dil mein hai ek baat. kah do to bhala kya hai by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar.

6. Kho gaya hai mera pyar by Mahendra Kapoor from Hariyali Aur Raasta (1962), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri, music Shankar-Jaikishan

Manoj Kumar is compelled to marry Shashikala giving up his childhood sweetheart Mala Sinha, who leaves in the boat to live a life of anonymity. At the same time, a dejected Manoj Kumar comes to the river bank. The boatman (S Nazir?) seems to be a clairvoyant to grasp the situation perfectly to sing this surrogate song expressing the feeling of both the lovers.

7. Jab hum tum dono raaji, to kya karega kaaji by Asha Bhosle from Bade Sarkar from Bade Sarkar (1957), lyrics Sahir Ludhiyanavi, music OP Nayyar

Sheila Vaz reprises her song-dance Le ke pahla pahla pyar, this time the lovers are Kishore Sahu and the snooty Kamini Kaushal. But Sheila Vaz knows this tiff is temporary, and, therefore, she has no hesitation to boldly declare, If the two are in love, what can the Kaaji do.

8. O timpa timpa timpa re…Us paar saajan is paar dhaare le chal O maanjhi kinare by Lata Mangeshkar from Chori Chori (1956), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri, music Shankar-Jaikishan

Nargis is swimming away from the captivity of her father to meet her ‘lover’ on the other bank.  The boatwoman-singer (Raja Sulochana) knows that the current is strong and in this situation only the maajhi can safely take her to the bank. The nonsensical words O timpa timpa timpa re add to the charm of the boat song.

9. Duniya ke logo lo himmat se kaam by Manna Dey from Mashal (1950), lyrics Pradeep, music SD Burman

As Ruma Ghosh is ousted (?) from the house, in this hopeless situation a beggar (Nazir Kashmiri) appears with his kids singing this song of hope in Manna Dey’s voice. Manna dey had his first superhit song Uapr gagan vishal in this film. The lyrics are befittingly by Pradeep, who had himself sung many inspirational or surrogate songs.

10. Beshak mandir masjid todo by Narendra Chanchal from Bobby (1973), lyrics Inderjit Singh Tulsi, music Laxmikant-Pyarelal

As the teenage lovers Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia are writhing in the forced separation, the Sufi singer Narendra Chanchal (himself on the screen) sings this authentic Sufi song, perhaps the first such in the films. The song extolls love even higher than temple or mosque – break temple or mosque if you will, but never break two love-filled hearts. The Punjabi Sufi poet Bulle Shah’s poetry has been adapted by Inderjit Siingh Tulsi. After the devastating failure of his most ambitious film, Mera Naam Joker, Raj Kapoor was down in dumps and deep in debt. Bobby became a cult film of adolescent love, bringing enormous success and money to RK.

  1. Ashokji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Jaane kahan gayi is a very apt song befitting the theme. I wish I had remembered it.

  2. Wonderful theme & equally wonderful choice of songs
    Will another Baul song
Aaj Sajan mohe ang Laga le- Pyaasa fit the theme?
    I may also add
    Nain khoye khoye – Munimji
Diwane hai diwane Ko – Janzeer
Though the later is not from golden era.

  3. What a UNIQUE and expressive theme. Never could imagine , there could be surrogate songs!!.
And what beautiful , sensitive compilation under this apt title. There is such an empathetic understanding of each song , that has been listed.

Like surrogacy to the child less; these songs are joyous and miraculous for the protagonists!
    Amazing concept!

I loved ‘Aan aan Milo Shyam Sanvarei.’ Initially little Paro is perplexed and then her whole being, resonates with the song!! And you are bang on, when you say; that baul songs make the best surrogate songs.
    Really insightful write up.

I owe it to Rakesh Srivastava Sir, for refining my palate for songs and introducing me to your melodious , discerning blog.

From henceforth you have a regular reader in me.

  4. Rahul Bhagwanrao Muli,
‘Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Aaj sajan mohe ang laga le’ perfectly fits, but I had already included a couple of Baul songs. ‘Nain khoye khoye’ is a very nice song. Thanks for adding it.

  5. AK JI Although the idea was mine, its execution to a superb precision was your hard work. I conceived “Surrogate Songs”, You delivered it and the result was a cheerfully happy post cuddled, loved and cooed over by our supportive readers like Manisha. No doubt the post is entirely your baby, I feel proud to be associated with it. Best Regards

  6. Song number 8 comes close in lyrics to my favourite of this genre “Mere sajan hain us paar” from Bandini. Most of SDB songs can fit in this theme.

“Jeevan se lambe hain bandhu” from Aashirvaad also fits. It perfectly expresses the inner feelings of Ashok Kumar as he makes his way to his village.

“O nadiya chale chale re dhara” from Safar fits. Again, a lot of Manjhi songs are like this.

The most poignant perhaps is “Ae mere pyare watan” from Kabuliwala.

Thanks Rakesh Shrivastava for insisting on this theme, and AK for such a wonderful post.

  7. Manisha,
Welcome to Songs of Yore and thanks a lot for your generous praise. I am happy that you enjoyed the concept and the songs, and I am gratified that we have a new regular reader of the blog.

  8. Rakeshji,
I am happy that the post has fulfilled your expectations. Thanks for giving me this idea, and your constant nudging which made me write it.

  9. Subodh,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. O re manjhi is a wonderful surrogate song. However, many SD Burman songs are not ‘surrogate’ but ‘atmospheric’ songs, which is altogether a different category. Yes, most manjhi songs would fit this category. Now. I realise there are many better surrogate songs other than the ones I have included.

  10. AKji
Another pearl from the bottomless ocean of ideas our blogmaster possesses. I expect a virtual deluge of songs on the theme particularly from the two pillars of profuse song uploaders. There are lot of Johnny Walker songs like – suno suno Miss. Chatterjee, from films like Gateway of India , Aar Paar. I do not know whether they would fit this topic. I did toy with the idea of writing something like this under the moniker “Second String Songs” since most of these songs are sung by second rung actors usually sidekicks of heroes. I am happy to see AKji bringing out a top of the rung writeup. Let SOY flourish through the current decade.

  11. Mr Rangan,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. If the second rung singers sing addressing the emotions of the main actors, that would fit under this theme. But Suno suno Miss Chatterjee probably does not fit the theme. Thus, the ‘Surrogate songs’ are a sub-category of minor-actor songs. Thanks for your good wishes for the future. You are yourself a person of endless enthusiasm.

  12. AK ji;

No ritual is more urgent than that of returning thanks . Thank you for your clear writing with superb add-ons of great songs…..oldies and goodies . Thanks goes to Rakesh ji for persuation of this rare and interesting topic.

All the songs …posted so far…. are favorite of mine . There seems to be many more as we all open our cards slowly and surely. To roll up the curtain…here are some….

    1. Mohabbat Ka Haath Jawani| Howrah Bridge Movie Songs | Asha Bhosle | Mohammed Rafi…..OPN……..incidently this video is being used in Ek Saal song….Ulajhe gaye do naina dekho. The song was there in Theatrical release print but now it is neither there in DVD nor in YT.

  13. KS Bhatiaji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation and your generous words. After seeing te songs posted by the readers I realise there are dozens of absolutely superb surrogate songs. Thanks are also due to Rakeshji again as I had not planned to write on this, having seen a fellow blogger already write on something similar.

  14. Ak,
Thanks to Rakeshji for the title as well as pushing you to take to up this topic.
Though Anu has handled this subject beautifully before, as you have mentioned, you have done it in your way.
    Good work thanks.
First song that came to mind whilst reading was the one mentioned by Ashokji, then going further down I thought that most of the manjhi songs can be called surrogate song and bingo Subodh already said it, but he the song that haunts me and fits the b is not mentioned so let me do it
    Sun mere bandhu re
    https://youtu.be/3Ft9RAWKZ0E
As bhatiaji writes… to be contd…….

  15. AK ji,
    A good theme indeed.
Mukesh has quite a few manjhi songs and they do fit the theme I suppose.

    1. Kaise manaun piuwa from Char Diwari 1961
    2. Maajhi Naiya Dhoondhe Kinara from Uphaar 1971
    3. Yahan Bandhu Aate Ko Hai Jaana from Chhattees Ghante 1974

  16. AKji,
SOY never fails to spring surprises. In response to Rakeshji’s persistent (gentle) persuasions, you have come out with a pretty wonderful theme. Thanks to both of you.

    Surrogate Songs, Ok;
certainly, ‘We feel, You sing’ has a romantic rhyme. With your vibrant style, you have made many a heart smile, mine too. And an awesome selection of tensome songs, depicting different moods.

In the picturisation, most of the “surrogate singers” sing to the accompaniment of musical instruments like Iktara, Cymbals, Harmonium, Flute, Dholak, Dafli, Rubab, Matka, Rhythm Sticks etc.

Posting a timeless classic. Singing to the accompaniment of Harmonium and Dafli. On whom the song is picturised?

Chup chup khade ho jaroor koi baat hai by Premlata & Lata Mangeshkar, film Bari Behen (1949), lyrics Rajinder Krishna, music Husnlal-Bhagatram
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-btaTuMDqbE

Wish there were such surrogate singers during our “golden” days.

  17. Mumbaikar8,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Sun mere bandhu re is a great surrogate song. It is the unique singing of SD Burman that it comes to everyone’s mind.

  18. Anup,
Mere jeevan mein kiran ban ke is a fabulous surrogate song, except that the soft melody is befitting the lead actors. Surrogate songs are generally light hearted and peppy to show a contrast with the inhibited pair.

  19. Madhu,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Dhalti jaaye raat is a great and surprise surrogate song. As I have responded to Anup, soft melodies I would put as a romantic song between the lead pair.

  20. Mahesh,
Kaise manaaun piyawa is my all-time favourite song of Mukesh, but it seems to me to be an atmospheric song, or is it sung on the screen by a human being? Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Other two songs would fit in this category.

  21. Venkataramanji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Chup chup khade ho zaroor koi baat hai is indeed a timeless classic and one of the greatest surrogate songs. Another unique thing, a lady carrying a harmonium hung from her neck – this is the only one of the kind I have seen – in a travelling singers’ song, the harmonium song is always carried by the man.

I remember your musings about your ‘golden’ days, you were quite a romantic and a poet at that. You didn’t need a surrogate singer. In a lighter vein, the girls fell for two kinds of guys – either he played football (or cricket), or was an intellectual with literary and artistic temperament. It was those of us in the middle who needed help. 🙂

  22. AKji,
The theme is offbeat and very nicely written. All the songs in the post and comments are very good.
I wonder how should we categorize mixed songs sung by supporting actors as well as lead actors. For example, the evergreen song “Jahan main jaati hoon wahin chale aate ho chori chori mere dil mein samaate ho” from film Chori Chori. Rajkapoor and Nargis get the chance to song as puppets not since the begining of the song.

  23. Akji,
In the first song (Jaane Kahan Gayi) in the comment section posted by Ashok Vaishnavji, we can see a lady playing the Harmonium hung from her neck to the accompaniment of Dholak and Guitar. I think the actor with the Guitar lip-synching the song is Rajkishore.

During those days I had Mukesh songs to fall back on, a sort of “surrogate singer”.

Two surrogate songs from the 1955 film Devdas have been posted here, one in your list of ten and the other one by Bhatiaji.

Posting a song from the 1936 Devdas. Hope this fits the bill.
Na Aaya Man Ka Meet Umariya Beet Gayi Saari by Krishna Chandra Dey, film Devdas (1936), lyrics Kidar Sharma, music Timir Baran
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=11&v=YKjWQUEvfEc&feature=emb_title

  24. Anup ji @20;

……mere jeevan mein kiran banke from Talaaq …..heard after a long long time. Its a very sweet song….beautifully sung and composed. This song often reminds me of another duet….though not linked to the subject…..do ghadhi wo jo paas aa behthe…..from Gateway of India.

A song from golden period when SJ was on top form….

    8. Dil Ka Na Karna Aitbaar (HD) (Dolby Digital) – Rafi & Lata – Halaku 1956 – Music Shankar Jaikishan

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmg3iTmVAG0

    …..to be contd…..

  25. Shachindraji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Jahan main jaati hun is a ‘Hybrid Surrogate Song’. Now that we are at this, even Le ke pahla pahla pyar is of this type, as the last para is sung by Shakila in Asha Bhosle’s voice. And if we rack our brains we can think of many hybrid surrogate songs. Film Om Shanti Om’s Dhoom tana can be seen as hybrid song, as the extra Shahrukh Khan in the audience imagines himself transported to the stage in place of various actors. Another song in which he takes the place of Rishi Kapoor in the song Om Shanti Om. Thanks for opening a new line of discussion.

  26. Venkataramanji,
Did I speak too soon? There may be more, but I think the lady hanging a harmonium from her neck is a rarity.

Thanks for mentioning KC Dey’s song in Devdas. His another song in the movie was a surrogate song.

Mat bhool musafir tujhe jana hi padega by KC Dey from Devdas (1935), music Timir Baran

  27. AK ,

    Wish U a very happy 2020

    What a gr8 post !!!
Nice narration nd selection of songs.

    In song no.8 , उस पार साजन , इस पार धारे
the woman singing … I don’t know who she is ..but she is definitely nt Raja Sulochana .

    Do U remember d song of d same film चोरी चोरी
    “तुम अरबोंका हेरफेर करनेवाले रामजी
    सवा लाखकी लाटरी भेजो अपने भी नाम जी ”
the actress with Master Bhagwan in that song … is Raja Sulochana.

Well , njoyed this post on a very different theme … Thank U nd Rakesh .

Once again , I wish U nd SoY nd my fellow readers a very melodious 2020.

    गाते रहो गुनगुनाते रहो

    – Pramod Godbole .

  28. The classification hybrid surrogate is remarkable, Akji
Now if lead actors express their emotions through stars & not minor players how do we classify the song?
    For example
Jaane man Jaane man tere do nayan- Chotisi baat

  29. Mahesh,
Chhoti si ye zindagani – Once I wrote a post on taxonomical analysis of song. Surrogate has become a very fertile topic. Since this song talks of fundamental truth about life, this is everyone’s truth. We can simply call it a ‘Philosophical song’ or a ‘Philosophical surrogate song’, if you will.

  30. Pramod,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation and greetings. Thanks for the information on Raja Sulochana. I will cross-check.

  31. AK ji
Thanks for a beautiful topic. You have played the opening strokes for the new year splendidly; as if Len Hutton or Lindsey Hassett starting an innings in good mood and in great form.
    Regards

  32. AK JI The phrase ‘Surrogate Songs’ was your brainchild and now a new term ‘Hybrid Surrogate Songs’ !! When it comes to coining new phrase, AK Sir, you have no parallel !! Like Aah song, majority of Manjhi songs too have life’s eternal truths as basic theme. Safar song is a good example. Connoisseurs of this blog have doubled the joy of this post with their valued comments. Allow me to thank you once again for this beautiful post. Our knowledgable readers also deserve special thanks who have come out with some marvellous songs that were not in my knowledge, earlier.

  33. Mr Rahul Bhagwanrao Muli @37,
You are now pushing the envelope. But thanks a lot. Let us now try to do a more complete taxonomy. We start with plain vanilla surrogate, and add variations.

    1. Vanilla Surrogate Songs
The essential element of any surrogate song is Party A (the principal) and Party B (the surrogate). In the simplest type, there is a shy couple, who are watching a sprightly song-dance performance by minor uninhibited actors, who could be folk, tribal, fishermen etc.

    2. Hybrid Surrogate Songs
It is essentially a mix of hybrid plus direct song, that is at some stage the Party A start singing themselves. This generally takes two forms: in the first type, the Part B leaves the scene, and Part A is on its own; in the second type, the Party B is very much in the scene, but Party A imagines itself to be taking the place of Party B. This clutter can be better explained by examples which have already been mentioned by you and other readers.

2.1. Hybrid Surrogate Song Type 1 (Displacement) – In Le ke pahla pahla pyar the street singers are out of the scene, Shakila is by herself pining in Asha Bhosle’s voice, Uski diwani haaye kahun kaise ho gayi.
2.2. Hybrid Surrogate Song Type 2 (Superimposition) – This is the case of Jaane man jaane man you mentioned, or the songs of Om Shanti Om. And if you recall there were many HSS Type 2 songs in the film Guddi.

Now we can make a general rule. If the Party A (Principal) are minor actors, and the Party B (the surrogate) are established actors, the hybrid song would be generally of Type 2, that is the principals will superimpose themselves in their imagination in the place of the surrogates. I should think there are more opportunities for HSS Type 2 than Type 1. It would be interesting to test my hypothesis empirically.

This is not all. There can be many interesting variations. For example, Mahesh mentioned at @22 Kaise manaaun piyawa. After watching its link on YT, I thought it was an ‘Atmospheric Song’, altogether a separate category. But Mahesh mailed me the link of the movie and referred me to the portion where the song occurs. The bridal couple are in their suite and this song filters through. Towards the end of the song Shashi Kapoor refers to a boatman singing it, and you can faintly see a boat in the river in night from the window. I would call it a ‘Surrogate Song which is actually an Atmospheric Song’, like we have ‘Duets that are really solos’ on which there is already a post on SoY.

Since the purpose of Surrogate Song is generally to draw out the inhibited couple, Chhoti si ye zindagani and most of the maanjhi songs which talk of some fundamental truth, I have described as ‘Philosophical Surrogate Song’ which can be seen as a variation of the Vanilla Surrogate Song.

  34. S Joseph @ 6, 44, 45, 46,
Thanks a lot for adding these beautiful songs. I think the two songs from the film Avishkar are atmospheric songs. As the name suggests there is no visible human being on the screen singing these songs, and these seem to come from the atmosphere.

  35. Venkataramanji,
Whom does KC Dey address in Teri maut khadi sarhaane jidhar? It seems to me he is addressing the funeral pyre which is consuming Devdas. I wouldn’t put it as a surrogate song.

Na pi ki nagariya – though the lyrics suggest surrogate, the coachman is not singing to anyone in particular. Devdas is too far gone to notice the song. Let us call it an ‘Ambiguous Surrogate Song’.

  36. AK ji;

With the addition of Hybrid Surrogate Songs , the scope of theme has widened . Let me see if following songs gets node from you.

    …..to be contd.

  37. KS Bhatiaji,
#11, Pyar bana bachpan ka sapna, naseeb dar pe tere aazmane yaa hun: Dilip Kumar seems to be addressing himself. Other songs are surrogate songs.

  38. Bhatiaji, Mr.Joseph, Mumbairkarji & Arvindji have posted some fitting songs.
Nain khoye khoye & Aaj sajan mohe ang laga le are nice songs mentioned by Rahul Bhagwanrao Muliji.
Deewane Hai, Deewanon Ko Na Ghar Chahiye from Zanjeer (1973) perfectly fits the theme. Gulshan Bawra on the Harmonium and Sanjana the dancer. Posting the song

  39. This is a nice topic, particularly the title. But, as the songs posted in the comments show, their are a lot of impressive songs. When I read the article the first song which came to my mind besides those posted with it, was ‘chup chup khade ho’ which has already been posted by Venkataramanji. This is such a good topic that I have a wish to post a few songs. But, first there is an observation that in many films there were more than two such songs and in some cases inter-connected too. In your post too, there are 3 songs which have another song in the film connected and of the same type. The connected surrogate song from Devdas has been posted by Bhatiaji. Both these songs depict contrasting emotions. In Parineeta there is a song in this category ‘gore gore hathon men mehandi rachake’ which has also contrasting emotions.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWlAyxLm4q8

Similarly there is another song in Bobby ‘ankhiyon ko rahane de’ by Lata which has similar emotions like ‘beshak mandir masjid todo’.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1ahw-mnyKw

Likewise, the film Badi Behan has two surrogate songs. One has been posted by Venkataramanji, but the other ‘jo dil men khushi bankar aaye’ has contrasting emotions. This has again been picturised on the same set of artists as in the other song. These two songs along with the two from Devdas fall in a unique category where same set of artists lip-sync the two songs.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGnUUqR7fwk

  40. I join others in thanking Rakesh ji for the suggestion of this topic and AK for the excellent post. AK has further expanded the scope of the topic by adding more variations. The shower of songs has started. I didn’t realize that there are so many surrogate songs
I wonder if”Bar bar tohe kya samjaaye” from Aarti will fit in any of the categories:
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sAjy3E3lQPU

  41. Venkataramanji,
Thanks for adding Sabhi kuchh lutakar huye hum tumhare from the Bengali film Indrani. I am aware of many Hindi songs in Bengali films which were either light classical traditional songs performed by a singer, or songs which had a distinct Bengaliness. Sabhi kuchh lutakar is so much a typical Hindi film song from a Hindi film.

  42. Mr S Joseph,
Ka se kahun man ki baat is a beautiful song by itself and a perfect surrogate song. Daaman mein daag laga baithe and Haye re insaan ki majbooriyan seem to be atmospheric songs.

  43. Hans,
Very perceptive observation about more than one surrogate song in the same film. Devdas (1955) is the best example because it is the same singers, same Baul style and, obviously, same principal character. In the second song the joyous tempo of the song as the itinerant singers are unaware of the inner pain of Paro presents a poignant contrast.

  44. Giriji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Baar baar tohe kya samjhaun has been at the top of my list of surrogate songs. But I have already used this song in another post describing the situation in detail, though at the time the word ‘surrogate’ was not on the anvil.

  45. AK, Hans ji’s

Yes; Devdas twin Baul style songs are unique ones. Bimal Roy ‘s talent shows in every frame.Whatis good factor is the poise with which Paro as a child and paro as grown up is shown. The make up of dancers , their steps in rhythm, are masterly captured by the cameraman.

In fact Devdas [1955] itself is a course of study….not only as a novel but as a celluloid exercise as well. Look out at details of filming of song…..Manjil ki chhah mein. A single song picturised on two main characters moving in different directions !!! To me it seems to be one of the type of Surrogate song .

    14. Manzil ki chaah mein….

    Movie : Devdas (1955)
    Music Director: S D Burman
    Singer: Mohd Rafi

    ….to be contd.

  46. Venkatraman ji ;

When the vehicle is in back mode ….the vintage shines more than gold. I always wait for your expertise in exploration of songs of 30s and 40s. Its a good exercise for mind and its health.

A few songs that I hope fits the bills ….if not then I will foot the bill.

Nimmi is the one actress who have sung songs based on words like ….kishti, sahil , majhdar , toofan and many other connected words that frequently appears in lyrics of sad songs. Digging up a few as they fit in the themes….

    ……to be contd.

  47. KS Bhatiaji @66,
Manzil ki chaah mein also fits as a surrogate song. “Devdas (1955) itself is a course of study – not only as a novel, but as a celluloid exercise as well.” So true. Incidentally, you may recall I did this kind of study earlier on this blog:

    https://www.songsofyore.com/one-hundred-years-of-sarat-chandras-devdas/

    @69,
The three songs you have mentioned are my great favourites. Obviously you share my fascination for Naushad. But are these surrogate songs?

  48. Hasmukh Joshi,
I couldn’t find the video link of Tera nikhara nikhra chehra, nor have I seen the film. Therefore, I can’t say if it is a surrogate song.

  49. Hans @69,
Thanks for adding my all-time favourite song. Vintage songs have their own charm. Saajan ke naina jaadu baan is not heard much, but what a lovely female dance duet, and surrogate too!

  50. Venkataramanji, @ 23

“Wish there were such surrogate singers during our “golden” days.”
Is this song for those who could not find surrogate singers?
    Not surrogate though

    @ 59
Thanks for posting Sabhi kuchh lutakar

    AK, @ 47
Hans has talked about more than one surrogate songs in one movie. SDB, in number of movies, has more than one surrogate song.
Here is one such example of hybrid surrogates both by
Rafi and Geeta Dutt from Naujawan
Panaghat Pe Dekho Aai Milan Ki Belaa

    https://youtu.be/8wpoebXrugA

    Naujawan – Zara Jhum Le

    https://youtu.be/O_v6R0CsR64

To add one more to Bandini. What category would you qualify this one to?
    https://youtu.be/FfREK8vl5-s

  51. S Joseph,
Both Chalat musafir and Hai na bolo bolo are surrogate songs, though there is a slight nuance in the former. The simpleton coachman never thinks on those terms. Even if some feeling develops between the two Hiramans, he is always conscious of the vast chasm between the two and is aware that the two worlds can’t meet. The layered meaning and the subtleties are the charm of Teesri Kasam. May I suggest it is a ‘Surrogate song that was not to be’.

  52. Mumbaikar8,
You always bring something new from समुद्र-मंथन. Two hybrid surrogate songs from the same movie is a nice addition.

O panchhi pyare: In a surrogate song the Party A (the Pricipal) who needs the Party B (the surrogate) should be very apparent. If it needs very detailed reasoning I would not bother to classify it as surrogate. This song happens to fit in some other categories more directly.

  53. AK, Coming online after a very long time, and I notice that I’ve missed many posts. Will slowly catch up. But isn’t it a pleasant coincidence that I surface only to see you refer to me? 🙂

Aapke title par aaap hii ke haq hai. 🙂

I’ll add one song to this – Aaj sanam mohe ang laga lo from Pyaasa.

  54. one more is one of the greatest classics as well as funny one having nonsense and derogatory picturisation to the classical singing !

Dheeraj kumar is singing on behalf of Shabana Azmi…after singing mukhda he eats paan !!!!!! then he starts singing 1st antara !!! after 1st antara someone puts biscuit in his mouth !!!! then he starts 2nd antara !!! there is a glass of orange rasna on his harmonium !!!!!! maar daaloge kya !?!?…Geet ho raha hai ki mazaak ho raha hai saalo ????!!!! aur woh bhi classical song ????
Yesudas and Rajesh Roshan must have felt a mini heart attack after watching this nonsense
“Ka Karu Sajni Aaye Na Baalam”

    https://youtu.be/R-bvaFL-IOs

Akji, you should make a post on such freakish picturisation songs too 🙂 🙂

  55. AK ji, Hans ji, Venkatraman ji;

Sometimes , songs at their face value comes very close to hitting the bull’s eyes…….and some time we have to wait till second or third stanzas for complete picture to emerge. Its the lyrics and situation of the song that ultimate are the winners.

Our words are often only vague, inadequate descriptions of our thoughts. Something gets lost in translation every time we try to express our thoughts in words.Through its creative power, art may trigger approximation and ultimate resulting in reconciliation .

With this partial theory, here are a few more songs which may find its worth as complete or approximate inclusions.

    18. Paas Nahi Aayiye Haath Na Lagaiye – Lata Mangeshkar – SAQI ..CR

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjQjQCQvbCA

    19. Phir Tumhari Yaad Aayi Ae Sanam – Manna Dey,Rafi, Sadat Khan – RUSTOM SOHRAB

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SVMfYZf7wo

20.Majhi Mere Naiya Ko Ji Chahe – Lata Mangeshkar – CHAR PAISE

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3x7ZhWU2uA

    …..to be contd.

  56. Anu,
Welcome back. Or, do you only wait for reference to you to make an appearance? 🙂

Aaj sajan mohe and laga le is a great song and perfect for this theme. Thanks a lot.

  57. Jignesh,
Welcome back. You to make an appearance after long gaps. Unke khayal aye is such a befitting song. And GM Durrani lip-syncing Rafi, how times change!

Ka karun sajni by Yesudas, and ‘Rasna’ orange juice on the harmonium, what a contrast. But how did you know it was Rasna, it could be Fanta or anything.

  58. KS Bhatiaji,
Your musical wandering makes us ponder and reflect. And songs you discover! The #18, 19 fit with the theme, but I am not clear about #20.

  59. Akji
I can only marvel at the your classification. It has some similarity with bonds ( vanilla, hybrid obviously there will be no junk bonds in the golden era)
Here are 2 more vanilla surrogates which are immensely popular
1 humne dekhi hai – Khamoshi
2 hum the jinke sahare – Safar

  60. Ak ,
Is the following song of film मियाँ बीवी राजी a sarogated one ?

    छोडो छोडो मोरी बैया साँवरे
    – सुमन कल्याणपूर

  61. Pramod,
There can’t be a better surrogate song than and a great song too:

Chhodo chhod mori bainya saanwrae by Suman Kalyanpur from Miya Biwi Raazi (1960), music SD Burman

  62. Mr Rahul Bhagwanrao Muli,
Your query led me to explore the classification. ‘Junk Bond-type Hybrid song’ is an impossibility because whereas ‘surrogate song’ gives high yield, it is completely risk free as far as I can think. Why don’t you look for a high risk ‘surrogate song’ which we can put in the category ‘Junk’. The only problem is that ‘Junk’ is an accepted term in bond market, but it has highly pejorative connotation otherwise.

  63. Mr Rangan,
Great. It can be seen as surrogate for two sets of persons. One, the stage actors for the couple in the Box. Two, Madan Mohan’s own ‘passing BA’ in the eyes of his father.

  64. Jignesh,
Please refer to my comment @47 in which I have given detailed classification and this song has been discussed. Jaane man jaane man is Hybrid Surrogate Song Type 2 (Superimposition).

  65. AK ji;

Life seems to be moving on fast track ….so also eggs. The society always seems to be on outlook par modern life. Banks and Properties becoming part of surrogate life…..one borrows and other either pays or enjoy. To some extent this symbolism was used in old movie song….

23..aana meri jaan meri jaan sunday ke sunday……

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQT_HmOUdRc

Lost in words for songs ….. lyricists/MDs now using surrogate of words in the name of MIX songs and flute replacing guitars in the name of refined melody!! The days are not far off when they will demand …not human rights but rights of the Robots for avoiding tax !!

Now, letting my missing memory come back, here are a few more songs…..and all are subjective of approvals.

24..Re Murakh Tu Kya Jaane – Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle – AMANAT –

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC0yaHCB8ZI

25.Ghar Aaja Ghir Aaye Badra – Lata- Chhote Nawab…RDB

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAUXqsaLYd0

26.Kala Pani – Jab Naam E Mohabbat Le Ke Kisi….ASHA….SDB

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F7gKkRxc1w

    ….to be contd.

  66. KS Bhatiaji,
#24 is clearly a philosophical surrogate song. My criteria is surrogacy should be obvious, and should not require a complex reasoning.

  67. Mr S Joseph @84, 96, 99,
Outstanding songs you have added and such fabulous surrogate songs. May I suggest another sub-category for Gaao tarane man ke. Surrogacy implies consent by both the parties. But in this case Nadira is conflicted between attraction for Dilip Kumar, and her anger at the pride of the ‘uncommon common man’. The princess in her wants to subjugate him and she is also angry with herself when she fails and yet finds herself pulled towards him. Therefore, this is an ‘Ambivalent Surrogate Song’.

  68. Back after four days.
The following song sequence appears twice in this film.
Kit Gaye Ho Khewanahaar, Naiyaa Dubati by Saraswati Rane, film Achyut Kanya (1936), lyrics J S Kashyap, music Saraswti Rane

When Pratap (Ashok Kumar) & Kasturi (Devika Rani) are in love.

And again when Mannu (Anwar) and Kasturi (Devika Rani) soon after their marriage.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=69&v=Mapop8dqndo&feature=emb_title

  69. AK ji;

In continuation from songs @97, here are some more…..

27.Thodi Der Ke Liye Mere Ho Jao – Akeli Mat Jaiyo ….Asha…MM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iSI3prhcno

28.LAALI LAALI DOLIA MEIN LAALI RE DULHANIYA.-ASHA CHORUS-SHAILENDRA-SJ TEESRI KASAM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWLnk3BcxmU

29.Song- : Gore gore haathon me mehandi racha ke..
    Movie : Parineeta(1953),
    Singer: Asha Bhonsle

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRwLzxoThSg

    30. Mere Banne Ki Baat Na Puchho – Asha Bhosle, Shamshad Begum, Gharana

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yULW6HpAT6Y

    ….to be contd.

  70. Venkataramanji @101,
Great additions. In the first Kit gaye ho khevanhaar there is still a romantic dream, and we can see Devika Rani’s fleeting smile. The second time, that romance has become an impossibility.

    @102,
    Excellent surrogate song.

    @103,
Both songs should qualify. Ab ke baras bhej can be seen as meant for all the prison inmates.

  71. AK
Your mention of Durrani lip-syncing @82 brought to memory the two qwaalis in Bahu Begum in which he lip synced for Manna Dey. Both of these qwaalis are surrogate songs. And this film has another surrogate song, a mujra, ‘nikle the kahan jane ke liye’, all of which are on the same thread.

waqif hoon khob ishq ke – rafi, manna dey
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW0jYaIhbAY
aise men tujh ko dhoodh ke – rafi, manna dey
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg_olS7baxA
nikle the kahan jane ke liye – asha
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QraImBLgIBs

  72. Hans,
GM Durrani – What a fate! Not many would know that he was once the idol of Rafi. Thanks a lot for pointing this out and the addition of great surrogate songs. Roshan is one of my greatest favourites. His signature prelude with flute notes always mesmerises me.

  73. Mr S Joseph,
These songs are sung by the actors concerned directly. The disguise is to conceal themselves from the family, busibodies. I would not count them as surrogate, but to each his own.

  74. In continuation I would mention another Roshan film Babar – 1960. This film has 5 songs and none of them is directly lip synced by any main character.

‘Haseenon ke jalwe pareshan rahte’ can be called a surrogate song.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoQmG5LdDHE
There are two songs ‘tum ek baar muhabbat ka imtihan to lo’ and ‘payam-e-ishq o muhabbat hamen pasand nahin’ who are executed through letters and the lip sync of the writer is superimposed on the letter.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDWO337wqT4
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNdGPBIhm6E

But there is a real surrogate song too there in this film, which is the most famous song of Sudha Malhotra ‘Salam-e-hasrat kabool kar lo’.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAtTf-cGzJY

  75. AK and Shachindraji, thanks for the appreciation. Roshan was really sublime in his compositions, especially after he grew in confidence after tasting success in Barsaat Ki Raat.

  76. AK ji ;

In continuation from songs @104, here are some more of a kind…

    31. Ab To Ji Hone Laga – Shamshad Begum – MR & MRS 55 …OPN

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KgXfbtpMhY

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXgKgZt9Jik&t=106s

    …..to be contd.

  77. Venkataramanji is presenting great songs from the 30s and Bhatiaji as usual in his elements. I think all may be thinking where is Dr Shetty. Until he comes I would try to make amends. Some more songs from colour era.

babul kaun ghadi ye aayi – umang – rafi (lip synced by Subhash Ghai)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNBk7Tbpie4
layi hai hazaron rang holi – phool aur patthar – asha
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMQ2MTt5jgY

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrepZg6lcZI&t=440s

  78. Hans,
Roshan’s Babar, and all the songs surrogate. It is such a delight. He gave great music all through before Barsat Ki Raat too: Bawre Nain, Naubahar, Hum Log, Malhar, Anhonee, Madhu and so on.

  79. KS Bhatiaji,
You have endless memory for different type of songs. Thanks for drawing our attention to the surrogate nature of these songs.

  80. Venkataramnji @118,
Great songs. I especially liked Haariye na himmat. I was no aware Ramchandra Pal also sang. Outstanding singer, has the style of KC Dey.

    @119,
Pyar karnewaale: Since Madhubala is singing a fundamental truth applicable to all (many shown in the video), I would call it Philosophical Surrogate Song (please refer to the last para of @47).
Zindagi ka maza: Plain Vanilla Surrogate Song.

    @120,
    Perfect HSS Type 2.

    Thanks for these nice additions.

  81. Mumbaikarji,
    Sorry, I missed your comments @ 74.
“Is this song for those who could not find surrogate singers?
    Not surrogate though”

Humse Aaya Na Gaya from the film Dekh Kabira Roya may not fit the theme of this post, but as you have rightly put this song could be a proxy at the right juncture for many. Nice song.

Dekh Kabira roya is a comedy film where the three leading ladies are enamoured by the supposed/ perceived professions of their men they fall in love. After the credit-titles the film starts with the caption “Truth is stranger than fiction and Comedy is exaggeration of Truth”.

This song from Dekh Kabira Roya reminds me of another surrogate song, rendered by Sundar, from this film. This song is borrowed from another film and for this reason too it can be considered as a surrogate song.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4_4pd10Hjc

Thanks too for posting the song
Ruthe rab ko manana aasan hai, ruthe yaar ko manana mushkil hai
Sune ghar ko basana aasan hai, sune dil ko sajana mushkil hai

  82. Mirza Ghalib (1954) is full of cutest and dulcet songs by all singers composed by Ghulam Mohammad. This song of Rafi written by MirZa Ghalib is sung by a wandering mendicant in streets of Delhi. He is accosted by Mirza himself and Mirza is curious to find out how this song is on the lips of the individual. Can this be considered a surrogate song

Hai Bas ki har ek unke

    https://youtu.be/Cw_tlUykgGk?t=52

  83. Hans ji, Venkatraman ji , AK ji from @115 onwards. ;

Thanks for posting oldies…what interests us more is those which were more inclined towards philosophical factorized songs. The journey that our mind makes in reverse orders are more challenging to our memory. No matter what sub categories they belong to ….it is equally important that they all create new vision and third angle for fit ins.

Hans ji , Thanks for that Umang song….the movie that made many actor , director and comedians from Pune film institute.

Venkatraman ji , Dekh Kabira Roya…is one of my favorite musical comedy film….very unlike of Amiya Chakravati who other wise was known for classic serious cinema.

I think AK ji has clarified all the quarries you asked for. I am now posting some songs , specially one from Amanat….looking for categories which they fit in .

    34. Meri Waffayen Tumahri Jaffayen || Old Classic Song Movie Amanat – 1955

  84. Mr Rangan,
Hai bas ki har unke is a perfect surrogate song because Ghalib wanted to hear that there was no poet like him. Thanks for posting it.

  85. N Venkataraman @126;

The song from Amanat….Ho Jab Se Mili Tose Akhian by Hemant Kumar & Geeta Dutt, lyrics Shailendra, music Salil Choudhury….I have posted earlier @89. I was looking for Bengali version of this song but unable to find. My daughters used to sing this song in their school days for musical shows.

  86. Bhatiaji,
Thanks for pointing out my repeat posting. Sorry for that.
I am unable to recollect any Bengali song composed by Salil Choudhury that is exactly similar to this song. However the lines “Ho jab se mili tose akhiya jiyara dole re dole o dole” sounds similar to Bhupen Hazarika’s song ‘ Hey Dola Hey Dola.

    And the last Antara
“Pyar me ye dil jaise, bich dhaar ek naiyya
Mein is par hu ya us par hu sach sach bata khevaiya”

Seems to have been borrowed from the following stanza of Salil Choudhury’s “Gayer Bodhu” (Village wife) song.

    Haay shei maya ghera shondhaa
deke jeto koto nishi gondhaa |
    haae bodhu shundori
    kothaae tomar shei
    modhur jibon modhu chondaa

    haae shei shona bhora praantor
    shonali shopon bhora ontor
    haae shei krishaaner krishanir jiboner
    bethar pashaan ami bohiree

Here is the song you will find the stanza @ 04:26-04:42

  87. Rakesh Ji and AK Ji,
Many thanks for this wonderful theme of surrogate songs and such beautiful songs listed in the main post, and numerous other shares have been added by friends and regulars in Soy.
Being late has been a habit with me now, but I am tremendously enjoying the comments and some great songs posted earlier.
Here are a few I think would befit the theme. Apologies if they have been posted earlier.

Shamshad Begum and chorus from Hulchul composed by Mohammad Shafi

Aan milo baalma taaron ki chhaanv me

    https://youtu.be/aqkkR7OpAZ4

Shamshad Begum and chorus from Shabab composed by Naushad

Laagi more man ki o saajna zara yaad rakhna

Lata Mangeshkar from Kaarigar composed by C Ramchandra

Mose rooth gaye more Raam re

A few more I think I’ll be able to come up with

  88. Arvinderji,

A rare but welcome emergence. And somewhat like the Hailey’s comet, which we get to see twice in one’s lifetime. You are making your second appearance this year (SoY’s), and it warms the cockles of my heart and I am sure, of many more too. Thanks for the three songs and nice to know you will be posting few more.

Welcoming with a nice song in Raag Kalavati
Aayi Pari Rang Bhari Kisne Pukara, Kisne Kiya Pyar Bhara Mast Ishara by Asha Bhosle, film Do Phool (1958), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri, music Vasant Desai

  89. baalma saajna duniya bhula di tere pyar ne tere pyar from akalmand a johar movie from 1966
    https://youtu.be/IRdbWEtEMrk
Unfortunately the original film clip is not available but this and some other songs of OP Naiyar like Tera Nikhra Nikhra Chehera are just like his other song Leke pehla pehla pyar which was a hit.

  90. Arvinder Sharmaji,
You do make up for your long absences. The three songs are excellent surrogate songs are not repeats. Naushad’s Laagi mere man ki is my special favourite as you must have guessed. Thanks for adding it.

  91. S Joseph,
Dekh tere bhagwan ki haalat and Jyot se jyot would not have struck me as surrogate songs. Since you have posted such songs earlier too I have created a sub-category of Philosophical Surrogate Songs, or better still ‘Universal Surrogate Songs’.

  92. Giriji,
There are many such philosophical songs of profound truth which is true for everyone. I have coined a special sub-category called “Philosophical Surrogate Songs”. Yes it fits.

  93. Venkataramanji @ 23, AK @ 28, Hansji @60,

Am coming to the party very, very late and I have had time only to skim through the post and the comments. Like in Hansji’s case, the first song that came to my mind was ‘Chup chup khade ho’ but I did a search on the page and Venkataramanji had already mentioned it @ 28. But there is another reason why this song can be considered a surrogate song – it features Suraiyya but is sung by Lata and Premlata, and I am sure Suraiyya would have loved to sing it!! There is another gem of a similar ‘surrogate song’ – ‘Sapna ban saajan aaye’ from ‘Shokhiyaan’. In this song, as well know, Suraiyya’s character is reluctantly fanning the character played by Achala Sachdev, who is singing in Lata’s voice, and whom Premnath seems to be besotted by!

‘Sapna ban saajan aaye’ by Lata, from ‘Shokhiyaan’ (1951) (MD – JAmal Sen, Lyrics – Kidar Sharma)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yahnWJo2LQY

  94. #138:

Please read ‘as we all know’ in place of ‘as well know’ and please read ‘besotted with’ in place of ‘besotted by’.

  95. N Venkataraman ji @129;

Thanks for the detailed explaination of the Bengali version song. Truly, the composition, antras and orchestration matches the hindi duet song. Visual imagination generally takes a step back ……of time clock…..looking for similar songs and next exercise is to fit in ….in the main theme . I am still in ….attempting ….mode . Here are few songs which may owe their inclusions on lyrical values alone.

    37. Shabnam (1949) Music Director: S D Burman
    Singer : Shamshad Begum, Mukesh

    …..to be contd.

  96. Further to #138-140, here are 3 surrogate songs sung by Rafi and picturised on Kishore Kumar. The first one played on ‘Bhoole Bisre Geet’ this morning.

    1. ‘Man more baawra’ by Rafi from Ragini (1958), (MD – OPN, Lyricist – Jannissar Akhtar)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJn5KxUwpd8

    2. ‘Ajab hai daastaan teri hai zindagi’ from Shararat(1959), (MD – Shankar Jaikishen). There seem to be 2 versions of the song – a sad one (this one) and a happy one. Shailendra penned the lyrics for one while Hasrat was the lyricist for the other – I suspect that Shailendra was the lyricist for this.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2svsXJxTVVQ

    3. ‘Apni aadat hai’ by Rafi from Pyaar Diwaane (1972), (MD – Lala Sattar, Lyricist – Asad Bhopali)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96NomhiSOR0

  97. Ashwin @138,
Nice observation about Lata Mangeshkar singing surrogate songs for Suraiya. Both are pretty good surrogate songs.

    @139,
Lata Mangeshkar giving playback for Sulakshana Pandit may be unusual, because latter was a very good singer herself, but I couldn’t see the surrogate element in this song.

    @142,
Rafi giving playback for Kishore Kumar may be a novelty, but these songs are not obvious surrogates. HFGK credits both versions of Ajab hai daastan teri ye zindagi to Shailendra.

  98. Mr Muli @143,
Since sunil Dutt is tone deaf, the Guru Kishore Kumar has epiphany after he hears a song from the radio. I remember it was Phir aane laga yaad wohi pyar ka aalam, and he decides he would sing Mere saamnewali khidki mein and Sunil Dutt would lip-synch to impress Saira Bano. This was an interesting reference to the playback technology used in our songs. I would not put it as surrogate, because until the cover is blown Saira Bano believes Sunil Dutt is singing to her. Having Kishore Kumar sing for him was a technical necessity, and not to overcome his inhibition.

  99. N Venkataraman ji ;

In continuation from songs @141 ……

  100. Muli ji @147:

The song was ‘Aanchal mein samaa lena kaliyan’ (Rafi in ‘Phir wohi dil laya hoon,’ MD: OPN).

    AKji:

Could a record player (or a radio, …) be the party B in a surrogacy? Apologies for being late to this absolutely fantabulous party.

(Dil ka diya, Lata in Akashdeep, MD: Chitragupta)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxt02JflpnI

  101. Canasya,
You are never late for an SoY party. We think of surrogacy as between real parsons. In Dil ka diya Nimmi starts singing along with the record player. But in general if we consider inanimate objects such as a radio or record player as Party B, what do we draw the line? Because many ‘Akashvani’ (Atmospheric Songs) have been posted. A possible resolution could be, radio/record player song is a special type of Surrogate Song in which the Party B is an inanimate object. This will keep ‘Atmospheric’ songs which do not have a physical medium. Thus, read with my #47, Dil ka diya jala ke gaya is HSS Type 2, with Party B being an inanimate object.

  102. AK @ 144,

My bad wrt the songs picturized on Sulakshana Pandit and KK. I had not grasped the correct definition of an SSS (SoY Surrogate Song), which is that the character not singing the song should feel left out of the song being sung by the other character(s).

An example of an SSS from relatively recent times would be ‘Radha kaise na jale’ from ‘Lagaan’.

Would you say that ‘Teri Bindiya Re’ from ‘Abhimaan’ be an SSS from the perspective of Bindu’s character?

  103. Ashwin,
Triple ‘S’ sounds like some ominous gang 🙂 .
Radha kaise na jale is a perfect surrogate song. Teri bindiya re: I thought Bindu’s purpose was altruistic and she played a role in patching up the estranged couple. But if some some embers were still burning you may take it as a Surrogate Song. We will have to think of some category for this song. ‘Dormant Surrogate Song’?

  104. O meri pran sajni champawati aa ja fits 100%. There is a special reason I am posting it. The comments in YT say that the male dancer is Gopikrishna (the female dancer is Madhumati).

O meri pran sajni champawati aa ja by Kishore Kumar and Sabita Chowdhury from Annadata (1972), lyrics Yogesh, music Salil Chowdhury

  105. Ak ,

Is the following song a surrogated one?

    ” आजा री आ , निंदीया तू आ ”
    – ‘ दो बिघा जमीन ‘

  106. Hans ji, Venkatraman ji , AK ji , Canyasa ji ;

The more we explore the more fun exploding. Ak says….to each his own !! Taking some liberty ….a little afraid to submit some more….with the hope they fit in somewhere in ……to me my own ….category !

  107. KS Bhatiaji,
‘मैं जब भी अकेली होती हूँ’ is a type of Surrogate Song in which the Party B is an inanimate object, such as a record player in this case, or radio. This discovery is due to Canasya. Rest I will have to stretch. You do believe in freestyle – to each his own literally.

  108. I was late in going through the post. Novel concept. Good songs. Nice additions.
Coincidentally, the same day that I read this,I chanced upon a beautiful vintage surrogate song on Atul’s Song A Day.

    IZZAT, 1937.

    Prem for mein baandh hame
    Kit chale gaye Giridhari….

Sunita Devi and Mumtaz Ali are the singers and performers. They have done a good job of both.
From 2.14 to 2.46, Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar appear on the screen enacting the song.

    Lyrics: J S Kashyap.
    Music: Saraswati Devi.

Veterans and experts please listen carefully to find out whether Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar have lent their voices for their portion. But,ASAD mentions only Sunita Devi and Mumtaz Ali as singers.

  109. Hans ji,
Thank you for noticing my absence.
You have, as usual, posted some very nice songs.

  110. Sir in this list two colorful songs await addition.
1 diwane hai diwanon ko na ghar chahiye lyrics Gulshan Bawra, music Director kalyanji Anand ji movie Zanjeer

2 ruthe rab ko manana asan hai ruthe yar ko manana mushkil…
Lyrics Anand Bakshi, music director Laxmikant Pyarelal, movie Majboor.

  111. Surya,
Welcome to SOY. Both the songs you have added are perfect ‘Surrogate Songs’. In my post I generally mention 10-15 songs, the readers add many more in their comments.
