Duets (+) of Mukesh: With Male Singers

22 July 2022

Guest article by Ahok M Vaishnav as a tribute to Mukesh on his 99th Birth Anniversary (b. July 22, 1923 – d. August 27, 1976)

(Once SOY-veteran N Venkataraman remarked that there has been a post on Mukesh every year. If it was there, I or a guest author must have had something new to write on. It was not mechanical. The enthusiastic reader-cum-guest author Ashok M Vaishnav has noticed that a post on Mukesh’s duets with male singers is missing.

One reason for this omission is that MM duets are very few in number compared to the conventional MF duets, and these do not cause same waves as MF duets. But for a gold prospector like Ashokji, this is no deterrent. The result is a very thorough article on Mukesh’s duets with some male singers.

As the SOY regulars are aware, Ashokji is a retired engineer and now a freelance management training professional. He has been a prolific writer on this blog. Thank you Ashokji for yet another superb article on Mukesh as a tribute to him on his 99th Birth Anniversary. – AK)

Mukesh and his male co-singersFilms in India, by and large, revolve around different themes of love between a boy and a girl. As such, songs come in very handy as a very strong and direct, easy-to-comprehend, medium to express the different shades of feelings of love. Traditionally, the solo songs occupied the space of prime importance. During vintage era this was more a necessity because the singers were generally actors themselves. Moreover, the recording technology also was in the development stage, which made recording a duet song with two vastly different musical qualities of pitch and timbre of a male and female voice was quite difficult in comparison to the recording of a solo song.

With the playback singers taking over the onus of singing, and advances in the filmmaking and song-recording technologies, the duets started gaining more importance in the film production considerations. Music directors also started taking this genre seriously and started creating duets that stood, almost, at par with solo songs.

Essentially, the duets are categorised as male-female duets, male-male duets, and female-female duets. As can be expected, the bulk of the duets in the films remain male-female duets. Male-male and female-female duets normally remained as duet songs that friends would sing together. However, the traditions of patriotic songs, devotional songs, or dance songs in the greater arena of music also inspired similar male-male and /or female-female songs. The subjects used to vary from manifestation of friendly affection – either positive or negative (jealousy), celebrating the festivities together, sharing of mutual concerns or one teasing/advising/counselling the other. As such, once the choice of subjects and practices of narrating the story evolved over the 1940s, male-male duets genre also started getting prominence. In the 60s and onwards, with more films being produced with more than one hero, the male-male genre further got more weightage. However, essentially, the core subjects have not changed as materially as that of solos.

In so far as Hindi film songs are concerned, duets of Mukesh constitute roughly 20% share of his total film songs. Mukesh Geet Kosh also includes duet songs that have some element of chorus in the song, while taking care that these are separately identified. The male-male duets of Mukesh, including those with chorus element, constitute around 15% of the duets of Mukesh. The male-male duets of Mukesh offer fairly wide-spread range, in terms of subjects of the songs, co-singers, year of the song, and of course, the popularity, to lead me to zero in on this subject for the post to commemorate the 99th birth anniversary of Mukesh.

Under the broader category of duets, Mukesh Geet Kosh also has separately identified songs that have some actor /actress chipping with Mukesh a line here or there in the song. I have not included such songs here. Mukesh has more than one duet with Mohammad Rafi or Kishore Kumar. I have chosen the one which I like most. In some cases, I have included a few triads or quartets (with all male or male-female combination), where the context of the narration, or paucity of a right duet, or the need for variety of different subjects or styles or music directors so necessitated. In one particular instance of duet with Talat Mahmood, I have included, rather had to include, an NFS as well.

So here are duets (+) of Mukesh with male singers, generally, in the chronological order of year of the release of the film.

With Shailesh (Mukherjee)

1. Rab mere araj sun meri sharan ab teriAag (1948) – Lyrics: Saraswati Kumar Dipak – Music: Ram Ganguli

Ram Ganguli has come up with a very different style of composition for a song that is essentially a devotional song.

If we would have strictly followed the chronological sequence of the release of the films, one of the two Mukesh-Mohammad Rafi duets from Chilman (1949) or Thes (1949) would have appeared here. But from the seven Mukesh-Mohammad Rafi duets, the song that I liked most happens to be a duet from the film of the year 1958, so that will have to wait for a while.

With G M Durrani

2. Aise mein koi chham se jo aa jaye to kya ho Hanste Aansoo (1950) – Lyrics: Shewan Rizvi – Music: Ghulam Mohammad

Here is an exchange of arguments for pros and cons between two friends of locating the bed if a house is built on a given location – one wants to set up his bed at that very doorstep so that when some (a much awaited) beauty comes up suddenly he would not miss it. His friend warns of another extreme possibility of a high-heeled slipper to be awaiting a welcome instead.

Ghulam Mohammad has come up with so lovely enough orchestration for this composition to induce revisits to the song. If we would have seen the film, we may also have come to know what will have happened after the song is over.

I have picked up a triad next because that provides us with a new combination of singers.

With Khan Mastana and another

3. Kyun shikwa karein kyun aah bhareinPagle (1950) – with Talat Mahmood and Khan Mastana – Lyrics: Anjum Rehmani – Music: V G (Snehal) Bhatkar

The friends have gathered to vent their frustration of non-result bearing efforts of their pursuit to get someone to love them.

Pagle had one more triad, with G M Durrani as the third player:

4. Ye aaj kal ke Laila aur Majnu Pagle (1950) – with G M Durrani and Khan Mastana– Lyrics: Anjum Rehmani – Music: V G (Snehal) Bhatkar

Another song of the youthful frustration when all efforts to woo the ‘fair sex’ fail, which leads to this deep sigh, in the form of

Ye aaj kal ke Laila or Majnu .. … … ik haath se dil ko thamate hain ik hath se ta ta kahate hain

It would be interesting to note that Mukesh Geet Kosh has clearly identified the singers for these songs, but HFGK mentions Jagirdar, Agha and Sheri as the singers, who in fact are the actors singing the songs on screen.

With S D Batish and another

5. Jaao sidharo hey radha ke shyamAarzoo (1950) – with SD Batish and Shamshad Begum, chorus – Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri / Jan Nissar Akhtar – Music: Anil Biswas

Mukesh and S D Batish do not actually get connected through a triad here. What is treated as triad in the credits on the record N 38386, is in fact a three-piece stage show story wherein the first (penned by Majrooh Sutmapuri) and third part (penned by Jan Nissar Akhtar) are S D Batish-Shamshad Begum duets with chorus and the second part (also penned by Jan Nissar Akhtar) is a Mukesh-Shamshad Begum duet with chorus.

With Kishore Kumar

The Kishore Kumar–Mukesh combination has an interesting aspect too. Except for one triad in 1953, they did not have a proper duet during the pre-Aradhana period, what is generally called as Kishore Kumar 1.0 career phase. Then they had a triad-chorus in Satyakam (1969) the transition year. They had their first proper duet in 1971, in what can be considered as Kishore Kumar 2.0. Since then, Kishore Kumar has had one more duet with Mukesh, in 1976. The duo further had one triad each with Sushma Shreshtha (Dharam Karam, 1975) and Dilraj Raj Kaur (Chor Mandali, 1983) as well as a quartet with Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar (Amar Akbar Anthony, 1977)

6. Lo mil gayi degree pyar kiMaalkin (1953) – with Kishore Kumar and Ram Kamlani – Lyrics: Rajendra Krishna – Music: Roshan

This must rank as the only song where Roshan has used Mukesh in a comedy situation.

However, the real irony of the song being treated as a Mukesh triad comes up only when we listen the full song and find that Mukesh just gets two words – first time just ‘Kahaan bhai?’ after the first line, Din mein sau sau chakkar kaate, in the first interlude stanza and then just ‘Kis ki?’ after the first line, Baithe baithe kismet khul gayi’ of the third interlude stanza!

https://youtu.be/vDREjcQOVFA

7. Haal chaal thik thaak haiMere Apne (1971) – with chorus – Lyrics: Gulzar – Music: Salil Chowdhury

I have a very sweet connection with this song.

In our BITS Pilani days, we would have one, just-released, film screened every weekend. Mere Apne was one such film. Since the story is about the restlessness of students (particularly because of paucity of jobs even after proper college education), the film had been obviously very well received in the campus. When you pass near any of hostel block, particularly after dinner time, you will invariably get to listen the whistling used in the song. Also, the cleverly split first line had tremendous popularly as an informal greetings exchange among friends – Question: ‘Haal chaal? Answer: ‘Thik Thaak Hai.’ – obviously, in the lyrical mimic of the song!

With Mohammad Rafi

Mukesh and Mohammad Rafi share the maximum number of songs together – 7 duets, 6 duets+chorus, 5 triads – one with Rafi and Shamshad Begum (Hanste Aansoo, 195), two with Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar (Shree 420, 1955 and Ahuti, 1978), one with Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur (Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya, 1966), and one with Rafi and Hemlata (Jaaneman, 1976), and one quartet with Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar (Amar Akbar Anthony, 1977). More important. perhaps, is that the association spans almost the entire career of both of them, with first duet in 1949 (Chilman and Thes) and the last one in 1978 (Ahuti).

I have selected one duet, which I have always relished to listen to. Just the memory of the song has helped to me ease out any tension coiled in, any time, in my mind.

8. Phirate the jo bade hi sikandar bane hue ….. Jo bor kare yaar ko us yaar se tauba… Jis pyar mein ye haal ho us pyaar se taubaPhir Subah Hogi (1958) – Lyrics: Sahir Ludhiyanvi – Music: Khayyam

Mohammad Rafi so lively pulls up his friend’s legs that even the Raj Kapoor’s lady love Mala Sinha cannot hide her smile. Moreover, if you close your eyes, the way Rafi goes with his part you can imagine how Rehman, otherwise an actor who plays serious roles, must be freely acting it out on screen, while lip-synching Mohammad Rafi. Every line Sahir has penned for Rafi’s part is just enough for any friend on the other side to break up the relationship!

With Mahendra Kapoor

For the records, Mukesh and Mahendra Kapoor have three duets, however the third one, from Saathi (1968) – Jo chalaa gayaa use bhul jaa, Naushad has used Mahendra Kapoor for just a higher-scale line being heard as echo Bhool ja… Bhool Ja, as haunting memory from the past that has to be forgotten.

Of the other two, both composed by N Dutta, one is for Dilli Ka Dada (1962) and the other for Holiday in Bombay (1963). I have selected the latter one.

9. Ye hasin Bambai apne ko to jam gayi …. Holiday holiday holiday in BombayHoliday in Bombay (1963) – Lyrics: Anjaan – Music: N Dutta.

The reasons I have selected this song will sound quite trivial – one: Mukesh gets to playback for the hero (Shashi Kapoor), two: one gets a virtual tour of Mumbai in the video clip, the third: you get to see a glimpse of now totally forgotten, Lambretta scooter (@4.12) and fourth of course, it has a connection with a 2018 SoY post – Bharat Darshan Songs (2) – Metros.

It would not be out of place to record here that Mukesh and Mahendra Kapoor share a triad with Rajendra Mehta, a famous ghazal singer of 60s/70s.

10. Mera rang de basanti cholaShaheed (1965) with Mahendra Kapoor and Rajendra Mehta Lyrics and Music: Prem Dhawan

This would rank as one of the best patriotic songs Hindi films have recorded.

With Manna Dey

The proper duet of Mukesh and Manna Dey, very surprisingly, has come up only in 1976 for the film Das Numbri. Even Mukesh, Mohammad Rafi and Manna Dey triad also came up in only 1973, for Teen Chor. As such, I thought it would be patently safe to fall back upon a quartet and a quintet from the earlier years.

11. Sathi re…. kadam kadam se dil mila rahein hai hamChar Dil Char Rahein (1959) – with Mahendra Kapoor, Meena Kapoor, chorus – Lyrics: Sahir Ludhiyanvi – Music: Anil Biswas

The song is an inspirational song, wherein multiple singers join to playback for corresponding actor on the screen. It being an Anil Biswas composition, the composition and orchestration are ideal, so are the lyrics of Sahir. It is not surprising that the overall outcome is a song that you would like to listen again and again for its sheer melody.

I am not able to resist the temptation of including a quintet chorus song, so well-known to me, and almost of all of us for that matter that came up in different light when I listened to it from the point of view of the present article.

12. Hum bhi hain tum bhi ho dono hain amane samaneJis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960) – with Mahendra Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey and chorus – Lyrics: Shailendra – Music: Shankar Jaikishan

I always admired this song for several stunning features – Shankar Jaikishan and the team for conceiving and executing the rich orchestrion (of particular notice is the violin ensemble piece @ 5.35 -5.52 that so vividly creates the feeling of speed), meticulous details of choreography of Hira Lal, and so creative camera work of Tara Dutt that captures every expression of every actor so lively and the overall direction of Radhu Karamakar – RK’s otherwise default director of photography. Essentially, the song was a chorus song representing dacoits on one side and the reformer (Raju) on the other side.

However, I could now easily see a parallel under-current of a duet too running in the song, beginning with two lines that follow the opening skirmish between Raka and Raju, when Kammo and her friend Bijli charmingly declare Hum bhi hain (@2.30), to which Raju responds, unwittingly, Dekh lo kya asar kar diya pyar ne. The visuals @0.45 to 0.51, where Kammo longingly eyes Raju, which Raka too does not miss to notice or that fleeting exchange of mutual appreciations @ 1.52 to 2.00 between Kammo and Raju corroborate the implicit germination of soft feelings for each other. The song virtually turns into a duet after the second interlude when Kammo directly intervenes the song with Itana sa ye dil tu de de agar sara jag tera ho jaye. (@5.03)

As the songs moves on, the mood of festivity of all so beautifully morphs into acquiescence of love of the two.

We come back to our main track again.

With Talat Mahmood

As we have seen @ #3 here before, Mukesh and Talat Mahmood did get just one triad as early as in 1950. These two may be the only male singers of that period who did not even have one Hindi film duet in their entire career.

Fortunately, three Mukesh – Talat Mahmood NFS duets, composed by Murli Manohar Swaroop, fill up this void. We had had heard one duet, Kisi ko deke dil koi nawa_sanj-e-fughan kyun ho, in the earlier post, Mukesh’s Non-film Hindi Geets and Ghazals.

I have picked up the other one here –

13. Wo jo roothein to manana chahiye …. zindagi se rooth jaana chahiye – with Talat Mahmood (NFS) – lyrics: Jigar Murarabadi + Mirza Ghalib – Music: Murli Manohar Swaroop

To the opening line from Jigar Murarabadi ghazal sung by Mukesh, Talat Mahmood joins by a Mirza Ghalib ghazal line Chahiye achchhon ko jitana chahiye, ye agar chaahein phir to kya chahiye… and so forth.

However, we can take consolation that they did have one more song in the Hindi films – an all-male quintet in 1966.

14. Mujhko muhabbat ho gayi hai, bas muhabbat ho gayi hai …. anhoni baat thi ho gayi haiBiwi Aur Makaan (1966) – with Joginder, Talat Mahmood, Manna Dey and Hemant Kumar – Lyrics: Gulzar – Music: Hemant Kumar

Normally Mukesh and Talat Mahmood are put at the slow-paced, serious film-song-mood’s spectrum. Another singer, Hemant Kumar also is considered to be the singer of that part of the spectrum. However, Hemant Kumar, the music director, seems to have helped Talat Mahmood switch the role and join him (in the role of the playback singer) in the fast-paced jest-cum-scolding session with that love-infested friend among the ‘five pandav’ friends who have vowed to remain unmarried till everyone gets a job. Talat Mahmood plays back to Keshto Mukhrjee who impersonates a girl along with Biswjeet who lip syncs Hemant Kumar!

I conclude here my part of the choices of duets (+) of Mukesh with male singers so as to start pondering over what subject SoY should take up for the celebration of Mukesh’s 100th birth anniversary post next year.

Sir ,
Very nice topic and a lot of information which was not known to us earlier! Mukesh has indeed rendered several songs with male singers which have not been identified. For example a song from Vishwas . Similarly there were songs from Humjoli and Satyakam also , if I remember. Then with Rafi there were quite a few songs but the one we remember is that from Hum Matwale Naujawan, the title song. Good memories !

2 KB July 22, 2022 at 11:23 am

And ,of course, there were songs from Raj Kapoor’s Sangam and Dharam Karam with female singers included.

Ashokji,
A apt post to launch the centenary year of Mukesh.
I would go through the post in entirety later.
Let me start by posting a song, which I believe must be Mukesh’s first MM duet.
Agaz chala anjaam chala
Wo rota hua naakaam chala
With Narayan, lyrics Hanuman Prasad (?), music Hanuman Prasad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F339Bhq85oY

Narayan sings only three lines in between,
Na wo Ram rahe na wo Seeta rahi
Na wo Lakshman aur na wo Raavan rahaa
Jo yaha kiya wo yahi raha
Sang Raghukul ka bas naam chala
Chala chala chala chala

Vaishnav ji
The male – male duets or triads are less common in both HFM history and music lovers as the limelight is stolen by solos and male-female duets. This is an excellent write up on the less common subject.
Here is triad rendered by Mukesh with Rafi and Kishor
Zindagi hai kya bolo zindagi hai kya- Satyakam- Kaifi Azami – LP
https://youtu.be/ADLUNeIO-FE

LP repeated same triad but now with Lata in AAA . Interestingly there were different playback singers for 3 heros but only one for three different heroines.

Thanks for bringing in Raseelee duet Agaz Chala Andaz Chala. I simply missed it out, thinking that Narayan may be the actor who may have sung those three lines

Rahul Muli # 6
Satyakam triad has Mahendra Kapoor as the third singer.

Your observation about one singer for three actresses in teh song Huko Tumse Ho Gayaa… is one omission that many times is repeated elsewhere too. One can only speculate what can be the reason for such an obvious act!

Ramaiya Vasta Vaiya is indeed an iconic song that Mukesh sings with Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi.

Ashokji,
Went through your post and listened to the songs.
You have done a fine combing and brought an excellent post with a nice introduction.
Except the songs “Ye aaj kal ke Laila aur Majnu” (#4), “Haal chaal thik thaak hai” (#7), “Ye hasin Bambai apne ko to jam gayi” (#9), “Mera rang de basanti chola “ (#10), “Hum bhi hain tum bhi ho dono hain amane samane” (#12) and “ Mujhko muhabbat ho gayi hai” (#14), the other 8 songs were not often heard.

My pick among your selection was undoubtedly the NFS “Wo jo roothein to manana chahiye”. In your previous post on Mukesh last year, “Mukesh’s Non-film Hindi Geets and Ghazals”, while posting the duet ‘Kisi ko deke dil koi nawa sanj-e-fughan kyun ho”, you mentioned that that there are two more such NF-MM-duets of Mukesh and Talat Mahood. Posting the third one.

AKji,
In your introduction you wrote,
‘Once N Venkataraman remarked that there has been a post on Mukesh every year.’

Must be a few years back, 2017 or 2018.
From 2011 to 2018, a dozen write-ups on Mukesh were posted, most of them on his DoB or DoD. In 2019, writing on Ravi’s other singers, you posted 7 songs of Mukesh. Incidentally, We did not have any article on Mukesh in 2010, the first year of SoY and also in 2020. We had a post each in 2021 and 2022 by Ashok Vaishnavji.

And Ashokji concluded his post saying
“I conclude here my part of the choices of duets (+) of Mukesh with male singers so as to start pondering over what subject SoY should take up for the celebration of Mukesh’s 100th birth anniversary post next year.”

I am sure you must be having something up in your sleeve.

12 Hans July 22, 2022 at 10:36 pm

Vaishnavji,
You have picked up an innovative topic and as usual handled it in your expert manner. You have discussed the history of all male duets too and presented a variety of singers with whom Mukesh worked. This topic would bring into focus this neglected part i.e. male duets. You have rightly included duets where female is present but there are two or more males, because the thing to show is Mukesh singing with other males and it would also take care of the numbers, which would be very low if we restrict ourselves to just all male duets or multiple singer songs.

I have song summaries of films from 1941 to 70, which I try to update from time to time on discovery of new details of songs. It may not be update, but as AK always says it would show the trend. I have not done this study for 30s, because there are a lot of gaps in the details available of songs and half-cooked info would hardly serve any purpose. For 70s, though I am not too enthusiastic about songs of this period, I may do it later.

As you rightly said solos have always been more important than duets. In numbers too, same is true. In the ten years from 1941 to 50 the solo to duet ratio was 2.75. The next decade of 1951 to 60 showed a drop in this ratio which came to 2.47. But all this came about in the last three years of 1958 to 60, which showed a sharp increase in the number of duets, which brought this ratio to 1.86 for these years. In the first 7 years of this decade the ratio has slightly increased to 2.83. The next decade continued with the increased number of duets and the ratio ended up at 2.23, though in the first two years 1961 and 62 this ratio had kept below 2 like the earlier three years.

Now I will have a look at male duets in relation to the total numbers of duets. As everybody knows, MF duets have always a lion’s share. For 25 years from 1941 to 65 MF duets had been hovering from 72 to 75 per cent of the total no of duets. In the 5 years from 1966 to 70 it came down to 64.5 per cent. Male-male duets were around 3 per cent in the decade 1941 to 50, which rose to 4.9 per cent in the next decade and 5.34 in the decade from 61 to 70. There have been all male multiple singer songs and also multiple singer songs where two or more male singers participated.

As you have all Mukesh numbers you can provide here the separate number for each category as I do not have Mukesh Geet Kosh, though I have my own list of Mukesh songs.

Venkatramanji posted the first duet of Mukesh. I post here the next two which he sang with Rafi in 1949 films Chilman and Thes as you mentioned. Both are very good songs. The Chilman song was also included in the film Jannat of the same year.

I take your analysis of Mukesh posts on SoY with same equanimity as I would take AKji original statement that has prompted your analysis.

The invitation to write about one more angle of Mukesh’s songs in the closing paragraph is in fact a call to everyone to roll back his /her sleeve and come up with very unique subject for Mukesh centenary.

We can all chip in with our suggestions to AKji through e-mail messages to him. These suggestions may even include the songs too.

Hans # 12
I did not even try to put in precise numbers to Mukesh songs with other singers, because I knew my data gathering is not ass accurate as yours.

Thanks for bringing in two 1949 duets of Mukesh-Rafi on the same page.

We have covered a good deal on Mukesh. But taking Ashokji’s article as the beginning of his centenary celebrations, something grand is in order.

15 N Venkataraman July 23, 2022 at 4:45 pm

Pradeepji @ 3,
You have mentioned two nice songs of the 70s.
Providing the link to the song from Teen Chor(1973)
Besharmi se shram na kar
Hera-feri se mat dar
Ek patte ki baat kahe hum
Jiska joota usi ka sar, O mister
Jiska joota usi ka sar
Mukesh, Md.Rafi and Manna Dey, lyrics Rajendra Krishan, music Sonik-Omi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w05ErixtFyM

A few trivias :

Mukesh for I S Johar; there aren’t many instances; only two more films I can think of –
Johar Mehmood in Goa (1965) and Johar Mehmood in Hongkong (1971), where Mukesh sang 4 songs for I S Johar in these two films.

Manna Dey for Jeevan; Teen Chor could be the first film;
Md. Rafi and Kishore too have sung for Jeevan!

Md.Rafi for Omprakash;
There are several (at least 25 songs) instances of Md.Rafi singing for Omprakash. The first film was Meena Bazar (1950).

Hansji @ 12,
You have presented some impressive ratios of Hindi film duets between 1941 to 1970.
Hats off to you for the awesome analysis. In the 2nd post on Vasant Desai too, you have provided statistics on Vasant Desai’s male singers. Now you are the reference point for HFSs statistics in SoY. I know it is a tediously painstaking task.

Thank you for posting the two vintage duets.
Interesting to note that the practise of inserting brand names had started as early as 1949.
Lines from the song from Chilman (1949)

Ashokji,
An interesting and well-written post, with nice information on the history of male duets.
Hansji has also added interesting statistical details.

I believe, Mukesh has sung less no. of MM duets, as compared to the other 3 Ms (Mohd. Rafi, Manna Dey, Mahendra K)

You have posted the part-III or triad version of Ek din bik jayega.

Thank you for the correction.

Thank you for posting all three songs from Dharm Karam (1975).
And especially the song from Ujala (1959), since in its picturisation one can see a double-decker tram which was taken off the track in March 1964. Also you can spot a double-decker bus and a few vintage taxis (probably Dodge). Surprised to find a similar vintage taxi in the 1975 song “Do jasoos kare mehsoos”

While on Vintage cars, let me post a song from 1960 film Shriman Satyawadi.

Vaishnavji,
About song no. 6 you said this must be the only song given to Mukesh by Roshan in a comedy situation. Generally it was fashionable to think that Mukesh was made for sad situations. But in the later era there is enough proof that he put in good performance in comic situations. I think him quite a versatile singer.

Film Do Jasoos was such a film where he partnered with Rafi in such a role. Songs of the film have been posted by Dr Deshpande. I am posting the song ‘na tum ho yaar aaloo na hum hain yaar gobhi’ from Dus Numbri, which fits here, being all male duet with Manna Dey.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9SDWD0DjNQ

About Roshan you may be correct, but he gave him a solo in Ghar Ghar Men Diwali (1955), ‘aadhe udhar hain aur aadhe idhar hain, ye hasrat-e-dil na jane kidhar hain’. This may be a song in comedy situation, which can not be confirmed because we do not have a video. The song is with a tonga beat, so it may be sung on a tonga.

Many statements that appear in my posts are MY observations, which certainly do not have any backing of of an authority.
The song ‘aadhe udhar hain aur aadhe idhar hain’ seems more of song of very pleasant mood wherein the character feels so joyed by “dhundhe to dhundhe dil ko kahan, ki aisi lagi hai kisi ki nazar” which gets further clarified when he sings “kahte huye ye miya majnu chale, ki jab se mili hai nazar se nazar .”
But what I state here is not take away the point that you have made – that Mukesh did sing comedy songs.

Dr. Rajesh Deshpande #29,30
Thanks for bringing up these songs since my familiarity with songs fro post-1971 films is very limited.

Venkataramanji, @ 18
Thanks for your praise about the stats. I had collected these some time back and AK once said I should write a post on these. I am slowly updating them and I think I may some day do what AK suggested. I procrastinate a lot. But stats to me come naturally and without pains though time consuming.

Actually I wanted to thank you for all the information in the last two posts which have enhanced my knowledge. It is also a happy instance for all SOYers, because it appears you are now fully recovered.

34 Hans July 28, 2022 at 3:04 pm

Rahul mentioned Amar Akbar Anthony song @ 6 in which Lata had sung for 3 heroines, while there were three male voices. The song at no. 11 in Vaishnavji’s post also has only one female voice of Meena Kapoor singing for Nimmi, Meena Kumari and Kumkum.

35 Hans July 28, 2022 at 3:19 pm

Vaishnavji,
I want to mention a fact about song no. 1, which has come to my notice. I had listened to this song earlier too, but not too intently. After your post, I listened to this song several times because I found a third voice in the song. I venture to present my opinion that this third voice is of Mohammad Rafi, which has strangely not been given credit in the song anywhere including HFGK. ASAD also mentions two singers only.

The second antara starts at 1.23 and Sailesh sings two lines starting with ‘badi dil ki duniya sooni’ and then comes Rafi with ‘laga aisa nazar ka teer’. I request AK, Venkataramanji and other friends to listen and give their opinion.

36 N Venkataraman July 28, 2022 at 7:55 pm

Hansji @ 33,
Yes, I do understand, people do best what comes naturally, and certainly most enjoy.
And thank you for your nice words.

@35,
No Hansji, I was unable to identify the third voice. Our other friends may have a finer auditory sense.

37 AK July 28, 2022 at 10:58 pm

Hans @35
“laga aisi nazar ka teer’ could very be Rafi but it is too short a sample to say definitely. Plus there is a continuity with the next line and there is no musical logic why a third voice should be used.

38 Anita July 29, 2022 at 11:30 pm

Vaishnavji, your post is so informative and exhaustive. I enjoyed reading it. The elaborate comments of the veterans of the SoY family with all statistics in place are enlightening.

39 Anita July 29, 2022 at 11:41 pm

Vaihnavji, I came across a triad of Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey and Mukesh from Biwi aur Makan. Aa tha jab janam liya tha – a hilarious song about the trials and tribulations of disguising as women.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAwM_p9ffbo

40 Hans July 30, 2022 at 12:19 am

AK, @ 37
I think the sample size is enough to trace a voice in this song. Mukesh has been credited as part of triad for four words spoken in song no. 6. I have listened to thousands of hfm songs and have not been yet convinced that there is always musical logic in each and every song. The only thing which matters is whether the voice sounds like Rafi’s. If it was not Rafi then who modulated his voice to look like Rafi’s and why. Is there any musical logic in modulating a voice to appear as another singer. I think Mukesh never in his career did a modulation to appear as Rafi. As for Shailesh, was he such a capable singer that he could modulate his voice to be heard like Rafi’s.

41 Hans July 30, 2022 at 12:24 am

Vaishnavji,
There is another query. In the 4th para of your write up you gave the number of Mukesh duets as 20% of his total film songs. This appears to be some typing error. So far as the figures I have with me Mukesh’s solos and duets were almost equal in number, with a little tilt towards solos.

Hans # 35

The point made you is so interesting. I, too, will have to listen the song carefully, with headphones on, before coming to any conclusion.

Hans #41

Total number of Hindi songs across Hindi, English or Gujarati films, listed to the credit of Mukesh, as per Mukesh Geet Kosh is 897 spread over 544 films and 79 NFS. I have not made an exact count of the Mukesh songs with other singer (MF,MM duets / triads + plus songs where an actor chirps in a few words) but the number will not be more than 300. So the over all share would be around 30% or so. of these, pure duets would work out to just over around 200. Pure duets with Lata Mangeshkar number around 120 or so, that with Asha Bhosle around 48, with Suman Kalyanpur 33, with Shamshad Begum 22 and 10 with Geeta Dutt . The rest is a long tail of 5 to 1 songs each with around 38 or so female singers.

I will once again state that I have done a very rough count here too. So the exact figures may vary after a meticulous and systematic count.

Thank you for your generous praise.

Biwi Aur Makaan triad is also quite hilarious one.

The irony of Biswajeet and Keshto Mukherjee continuing to use their male voices when among the company of the other three friends is a good subtle humor attempted in the film.

47 Hans August 1, 2022 at 10:00 pm

Vaishnavji, @ 44
As Venkataramanji and I discussed, stats is a thing which is tough unless you like it. So I can understand your problem. Before HFGK came, there was a general perception that Mukesh sang about 80 to 90 per cent as solos. This post of yours have pushed me to update stats about Mukesh for which I am thankful to you.

My figures may be different than Mukesh Geet Kosh, but they are very close. As per my figures (upto 1985) Mukesh sang a total of 853 songs, out of which 435 were solos and 418 duets including MF, MM and multiple singer songs. Besides these HFGK also lists 13 songs in unreleased films, which I have not included, but may have been included in MGK. Male-female songs which Mukesh had were 350 in number. Out of these all were proper duets with regular singers, except one from Sangam (well known ‘bol radha bol’) with Vyjyatimala and one from Albeli (1974) with Nazima. As we all know, the Sangam interventions by the heroine were part of the song situation, so it is rightly called a duet. In the other one Nazima utters just 2-3 words in the start and that is more of a Mukesh solo. But not counting these two hardly makes any difference, because the number is much more than what you assumed.

Of the remaining 65 songs, 24 are male-male duets and 41 where 3 or more singers were used. Of these 41, in 8 Mukesh sang with only female singers. The remaining 33 are eligible as per the criteria fixed by you. Twenty two of the male-male songs are with regular singers. Of the remaining two, in one Johny Whisky was co-opted for speaking a few words on behalf of a doll in the film Akeli Mat Jaiyo which I post here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgZwjycd250

The other is from Priya-1970. There Anandji, the younger of the duo Kalyanji-Anandji, makes a lot of oral interventions, which are part of the song. This song has two parts, one is comic and the other serious. Here is the comic part where Anandji’s voice is used.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkHjSsSg1M8&t=1s

Of the 33 songs, only one has an actor Rajesh Khanna used in the song ‘haan to main kya keh raha tha’. Words spoken by him are also part of the song as you would see from the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_Cjt2PDX4w

In the male-female duets Mukesh had songs with 48 singers including the two heroines mentioned above. Exactly half of these singers had only one duet with Mukesh and 8 others had just 2 songs each. In addition to the five mentioned by you, 6 others had 5 or more songs with him. Lata had the maximum (143) duets.

48 Ashok M Vaishnav August 4, 2022 at 3:41 pm

I had not previously heard “Saathi Re Qadam Qadam Se.” What a stirring and brilliantly melodious song! And what a sad state the recording is in. I spent a half hour listening to versions on various sites. All of them, even the CD version released by Sa Re Ga Ma, seem to have been made from the same master and include the same distortions throughout. I hope that a version with better audio quality will someday become available.

It is Anil Bishwas at his chorus composition best.

I have not listened to the YT videos that minutely, so I am just not aware of such distortions. Hats off to your diligence for the so fine details!

I could find that song is available on iTunes. If you can access it , do try it and see it meets your expectations.
