Vasant Desai Part 2 (post-1950s): His male singers

10 July 2022

Vasant DesaiIn Vasant Desai Part 1 pertaining to the vintage years (1930s and 40s), we were introduced to his multifaceted talents, including his acting and singing. As per N Venkataraman he had sung a total of 37 songs in Hindi and Marathi. We all agreed that he was an outstanding singer, but surprisingly his singing career came to a complete halt in 1944. The era of the great male playback years was a few years away. The difference between vintage and golden era (post-1950s) is not merely chronological, but also the singing style and emergence of new great playback singers: Rafi, Mukesh, Talat Mahmood, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosle etc.

As far as female playback singers are concerned Lata Mangeshkar is a clear front-runner with over 110 songs by Vasant Desai. Besides the quantity, several of these songs are timeless. On the other hand he does not show any marked preference for any male singer. He was very eclectic in his choices and gave great songs for a wide range of singers. Therefore, it is best to review his male singers in specific groups. For each singer in this post, I have taken one representative song. In many cases I have taken a duet if I liked that most.

A. Vintage singers

Hans Jakhar has observed that the year 1950 should also be included in vintage era. He is right if you consider that in Dahej (1950) his male singer is Krishna Goyal and female singer is Jayshree. This is interesting because by then the great playback singers of the golden era were in full bloom and Vasant Desai had already used them in earlier years. Also, the hero of the film Karan Dewan sang some everlasting songs until a year ago, such as Duniya hamaare pyar ki yun hi jawan rahe (with Lata Mangeshkar; Lahore, 1949; Shyam Sundar). We also find Surendra and GM Durrani in Vasant Desai’s films in the early 1950s. The most popular of them was Krishna Goyal’s songs in Dahej.

1. Krishna Goyal
Who was Krishna Goyal? Anil Bhargav’s ‘Swaron Ki Yatra’ says that he was born in Jammu in 1927. After completing his education and training in music he came to Lahore Radio Station which started broadcasting his songs regularly. The attraction of singing in films drew him to Bombay where he got his first break as an actor-singer in Krishna Sudama (1947) under the baton of Shyam Babu Pathak. He sang in about a dozen films, but his most famous remains this song from Dahej, picturised on the actor-singer-until-a-year-back Karan Dewan!

Aa ja nigahon mein aa ja, khayalon mein aa ja by Krishna Goyal from Dahej (1950), lyrics Shams Lakhanavi, music Vasant Desai.

B. Classical singers/ Musicians

Vasant Desai was famous for his classical raag-based songs. This is very different from having famous classical musicians sing and perform in a film setting. Vasant Desai shows his mastery with the classical form with some great artistes.

2. Panditrao Nagarkar (1910-1977)
Panditrao Nagarkar (full name Govind Parashuram Nagarkar) studied up to matriculation. He took to music early and trained in classical music for some time. In 1930, the record company Odeon cut some records of his songs. He sang and acted in theatre as well; he started his own drama troupe named Sulochana Sangeet Mandali with the singer Sulochana Palkar. The troupe lasted from 1934 to 1937.  What brought him great fame was his acting and singing in the Marathi film Amar Bhopali (1951). This movie was a biopic on Honaji, a simple cow-herder, who had innate gift of poetry, set in the last days of Maratha Confederacy, i.e. early 19th century. Panditrao played Honaji and sang his verses. Our friend Dr Deshpande mentioned in his comment #104 on the last post that it was Honaji who popularised Lavani. The bhajan set in Raag Bhopali, Ghanshyam sundara has become a cultural icon of Marathi middle class households. This song has been discussed earlier on SOY and it has floored us for its beauty. This video also gives its meaning in English, which indicates that it is the song of dawn. I am told that ‘Bhopali’ besides being a raag, also means in Marathi a class of morning songs of prayer, generally to Krishna. As Honaji was also a cow-herder, he sings a prayer to Krishna to arise, in the style of Shri Venkatesh Suprabhatam:

The flock of birds that gathered together
On a tree in the evening
Flew away at dawn in search of food.

Rising up at dawn, the kavadi starts on his way.
Finishing their morning chores, womenfolk with water pots on their waists,
Have gone to Yamua river to fetch water.

Mukunda, partake of our offerings.
O, the one who is the root of all happiness, arise,
The night has ended and it is morning.

The cows are mooing
Milk the cows taking milk pot.
The calves are eagerly waiting to suckle.

The bee trapped inside the closed lotus flower finds freedom
As the face of easterly direction lightens obliterating the darkness.
O the one who is dark like rain-filled cloud blissful Krishna!
The sun has risen.
Arise O forest-dweller!
The sun has arrived at the sunrise mountain.

Ghanshyam sunddara by Panditrao Nagarkar /Panidtrao Nagarkar & Lata Mangeshkar from Amar Bhopali (1951), lyrics Honji Bala, music Vasant Desai.

3. Ustad Amir Khan
The main theme of Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje was highlighting the superiority of classical over baazaru through dance. Ustad Amir Khan was a singers’ singer. It is said that Vasant Desai had earlier composed the title song in Raag Darbari, a profound raag which went very well with a serious singer like Ustad Amir Khan. But V Shantaram was not happy about it. He asked Vasant Desai to redo it in Raag Adana. Both have the same scale but Darbari emphasises the lower half of the octave (पूर्वांग प्रधान), whereas Adana emphasis the upper half (उत्तरांग प्रधान). The result is a bright title song. If you want to have a feel how it would sound in Darbari, think of SJ-Manna Dey’s Jhanak jhanak tori baaje payaliya from Mere Huzoor (1968).

Jhanak jhanak payal baaje by Ustad Amir Khan from Jhanak Jhanak Paya Baaje (1955), lyric Hasrat Jaipuri, music Vasant Desai

4. Ustad Bismillah Khan
Ustad Bismillah Khan was a मस्त फकीर. In any concert he would play the tune of Dil ka khilauna haye toot gaya on public demand. His shehnai was the highlight of Goonj Uthi Shehnai. He combines with Ustad Amir Khan in this wonderful Raagmalika, picturised on the guru Ulhas (vocal) and his pupil Rajendra Kumar on the shehnai. The video recognises the raags used as Bhatiar, Ramkali, Desi, Shuddh Sarang, Bageshree and Chnadrakauns tarana.

Raagmalika jugalbandi by Ustad Amir Khan and Ustad Bismillah Khan from Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959), music Vasant Desai

5. Ustad Salamat Ali Khan (12.12.1934-11.7.2001)
Ustad Salamat Ali Khan with his elder brother Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan made the famous Ali Brothers. They received rigorous training in music from their father and became the flag-bearers of Sham Chaurasia gharana which was named after their birth place. This gharana had a long tradition of Dhrupad gayaki. To Ali brothers goes the credit of bringing Khayal gayaki to this gharana. After partition they migrated to Pakistan where they kept the flag high for Hindustani classical music. Because of some personal differences the brothers parted ways and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan sang solo thereafter. He trained his sons Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan and Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan who are carrying forward the family tradition of classical music. He sings this Raagmalika with Lata Mangeshkar from an unreleased film Amar Samadhi (1960). The video identifies the raags used as Lalit, Shuddh Sarang, Yaman, Marwa and Adana.

Tumhre gun gaaun (Raagmalika) by Ustad Salamat Ali Khan and Lata Mangeshkar from Amar Samadhi (UR, 1960), music Vasant Desai

6. Pt. Jasraj
Pt. Jasraj was a classical singer for the uninitiated and hence the most accessible. He was the flag-bearer of Mewati gharana; Vasant Desai uses him beautifully in the film Ladki Sahyadri Ki (1966).

Vandna karo archana karo is dhara mahan ki, swarg ke saman ki by Pandit Jasraj from Ladki Sahyadri Ki (1968), lyrics Bharat Vyas, music Vasant Desai

C. Mainstream playback singers

7. Rafi
Rafi sang 36 songs in all for Vasant Desai. In Goonj Uthi Shaenai (1959), he had two solos – Kah do koi na kare yahan pyar and Maine peena seekh liya – and three superb duets with Lata Mangeshkar. My favourite is this duet which starts with a slow shehnai piece played by Rajenda Kumar which pulls a restless Amita towards him. She responds with a slow recital, Rok sake na raah hamari duniya ki deewar/ Saath jiyenge saath marenge amar hamar pyar, followed by an unexpectedly fast song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kl3pkHBmhs

8. Manna Dey
Manna Dey had an immortal inspirational song, Nirbal se ladai balwan ki, ye kahani hai diye ki aur toofan ki in Toofan Aur Diya (1956), and next year he combined with Lata Mangeshkar to sing one of he best rain songs in our films. You see Shantaram, Sandhya, her kids, and the ferocious prisoners dancing in joy in the rains they have been waiting for long. Now the parched earth would be drenched letting them plough and sow seeds.

Ho umad ghumad kar ayi re ghata, kaare kaare badra ki chhai chaai re ghata by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar from Do Aankhen Baarah Hath (1957), lyrics Bharat Vyas, music Vasant Desai

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtUnvEtFcZA

9. Talat Mahmood
Talat Mahmood makes an early entry with Vasant Desai in Hyderabad Ki Nazneen (1952). Thereafter, he gets songs off and on. His two duets with Lata Mangeshkar have become extremely popular. One is Tim tim tim taaron ke deep jale from the film Mausi (1958). And the other is this fast-paced joyous song, picturised on Raja Gosavi and B Saroja Devi.

O dildar suno ek baar kya mera pyar pasand hai tumhein by Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar from School Master (1959), lyrics Kavi Pradeep, music Vasant Desai

10. Hemant Kumar
The only song Hemant Kumar possibly sang for Vasant Desai is Nain so nain naahi milaao, a duet with Lata Mangeshkar. But he did not need to sing too many songs to sing a masterpiece.

Nain so nain naahi milaao by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar from Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1959), lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri, music Vasant Desai

11. Subir Sen
For non-Bengalis, Subir Sen’s voice is indistinguishable from Hemant Kumar. He got to sing this marvellous duet with Lata Mangeshkar.

Pyar mein milna sanam hota hai taqdeer se by Subir Sen and Lata Mangeshkar from Ardhangini (1959), lyrics Majrooh Sultanpuri, music Vasant Desai

12. Where is Mukesh?
I don’t off-hand remember any Mukesh song composed by Vasant Desai. It seems very unusual. But Mukesh must have sung from him.

D. Unusual singers

13. V Shantaram
V Shantaram as a singer? I don’t know whether he sang any songs. But the famous prayer Ai maalik tere bande hum we associate with Lata Mangeshkar was also sung by Shantaram when he leads the prayer with the outlaws.

Ae maalik tere bande hum, aise hon hamaare karam by V Shantaram & others from Do Aankhen Baarah Haath (1957), lyrics Bharat Vyas, music Vasant Desai

14. Ashok Kumar
Ashok Kumar, the actor-non-singer did sing many songs in Bombay Talkies era and some other films in 30s and 40s, but that came to a full stop in 1947. But Vasant Desai made him sing two solos – Railgaadi railgaadi, chhuk chhuk and Naav chali naani ki naav chali and two duets/triads in Aashirwad (1968). The train song became so popular that the Indian Railways often used that in their advertising campaigns. Once their tableaux in Republic Day parade was based on this theme.

Railgaadi, railgaadi, chhuk chhuk chhuk and Naani ki naav chali by Ashok Kumar from Aashirwad (1968), lyrics Harindranath Chattopadhyay, music Vasant Desai

Here is a combined video of Ashok Kumar’s both the solos.

AKIji, I was happy to read part 2 of your series on Vasant Desai. I must mention the song of Guddi – Bole Re Papihara set to Raag Mian Malhaar -as one of my personal favourites.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQGwPoOpu6Y
This song in fact launched Vani Jairam as a singer to reckon with.

AKji,
A good idea to divide the post by gender. That way, it’s easy to cover all the aspects.
Nice to see घनश्याम सुंदरा on the list. One of my great favourite!
Is there one more part for the male singers?
If no, I would like to add,
Mahendra Kapoor,

Kalpana ke ghan barasate from Amar Jyoti

I too off hand don’t remember any of Mukesh sing for Vasantrao.

AKji, I am sorry, the male singers part of the title escaped my attention. My comment would be appropriate for your (future) post on Vasant Desai’s female singers and not for this.

4 AK July 10, 2022 at 2:48 pm

Anita @1, 3,
Thanks a lot. How can one forget Vani Jairam’s two songs in the film Guddi. Those songs launched a hundred stories.

5 AK July 10, 2022 at 2:53 pm

Anup,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Kalpana ke ghan baraste is an important addition as it includes another major playback singer and the song is ver famous.

I don’t think there is room for another post on male singers. I have taken a broad sweep, all major artistes are covered. It is another matter that under this heading, many times more songs are available, but there will be overlap in the singers.

6 KB July 10, 2022 at 7:03 pm

It is nice to know about Vasant Desai ‘s male singers. He gave opportunity to almost all the top of male singers of his period including Subir Sen . But the sad aspect is that two prominent singers of the time Mukesh and Kishore Kumar did not sing any songs for him.

7 AK July 10, 2022 at 7:24 pm

KB,
Once we start exploring his male singers his diverse set of singers is the most striking aspect. Mukesh’s omission, if really he had no song, is surprising. I am not surprised about the absence of Kishore Kumar. There are two distinct Kishore Kumars – pre-Aaradhana (KK 1.0)and post Aaradhana – KK 2.0. My favourite is KK 1.0, but except for Dev Anand, I don’t count him among mainstream singers who got to sing for top actors in top banners. KK 2.0 was everywhere but that was the period of dominance of the Big Three – RDB, LP and KA.

8 Sivanandam July 10, 2022 at 10:19 pm

AK Ji,
Great compilation of songs of the genius Vasant Desai. It is really surprising to note that there is no song of Mukesh with him. I never realised this so far!
My views on KK match yours! I also like KK 1.0 and in fact always felt his voice & singing was too good during those years. Unfortunately he got limited songs at tha time.
Manna Da’s ” Nirbhal se ladai balwan ki” is one of my very fav Manna Da songs. Though a long one , Bharat Vyas’ lyrics and that typical percussion pattern of Vasant Desai ( one can say that was his defining style) make it an evergreen one.
Looking forward to the female singers sequel.

9 AK July 10, 2022 at 10:35 pm

Mr Sivanandam,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Mukesh absence is really surprising, someone would have posted by now. Nirbal se ladaai bhagwan ki is indeed a superb song.

10 KB July 11, 2022 at 1:06 pm

Sir,
You are very right about KK. At 2.0 he was used by almost all the composers at that time but only a few of them used him at the 1.0 stage. Hence , it is clearly understandable about his omission by Vasant Desai. As you also rightly said Mukesh was at that time used by all mainstream composers during the 5os and 60s excepting a very few. Incidentally , Mahendra Kapoor was also used by Vasant Desai and was given some good songs .

11 Rahul Muli July 11, 2022 at 10:21 pm

AK ji
Outstanding list of songs!
Vasant Desai used a wide range of male singers for his Marathi songs. The list includes most of the singers who specialised in natya Sangeet. And apart from Kumar Gandharva ( runanubandhachya and uthi uthi gopala) he also got Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and pt. vasantrao Deshpande to render songs in Marathi.
Talat Mehmood and Mahendra Kapoor also rendered Marathi songs under his baton.

Mr Muli,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Marathi songs you have added are absolutely outstanding. I am regretting that I included his one song from a Marathi film. I am very happy that you are making up for this omission.

13 Ashok Kumar Tyagi July 12, 2022 at 8:08 am

AK ji,
This is another lovely post on Vasant Desai. As I learned from your articles, Vasant Desai was a fascinating person – always full of positive energy. He humbly did whatever he was asked to do and did all assignments very diligently and skilfully.

The Bombay film industry was lucky to get the services of such a nice and highly talented young man.
Thanks.

14 Hans July 12, 2022 at 12:28 pm

This is a very good write-up, giving a lot of information particularly about classical singers. In the early part of his career he was under the influence of Shantaram who did not use Rafi and mostly used vintage singers. He made films of low budget and personally perhaps did not care for music and it was mostly due to the genius of Vasant Desai, who put up with all kinds of singers, that there was good music. Of the 7 Shantaram films upto 1950, he did not use even Lata for playback, the only Lata song being for herself in Jeevan Yatra. He was more interested in soothing feelings of his second wife Jayshree than using some good singers. In such a scenario Mukesh had no chance and later he stopped singing for others between 52 to 57.

After the first post I had did some research on Desai’s singers. He used in all 33 male singers as per my records. There were 67 male solos in Hindi films, plus 56 MF duets where male had equal share, 5 all male duets and in 10 of the 11 multiple singer songs singing part was given to 12 male singers. Rafi sang 15 solos, 16 MF duets, 2 MM duets and 1 triad. Manna Dey sang 8 solos, 10 MF duets and 3 triads. Manmohan Krishna sang 10 solos and 3 duets, of which 6 solos and the 3 duets he sang in Matwala Shayar Ram Joshi. Mahendra Kapoor sang 6 solos, 5 MF duets and 2 triads. These were his main male singers.

I think everybody must have listened to this typical Pradeep song.

Tyagiji,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Vasant Desai was uncomplaining type. But he was dedicated to his craft.

16 AK July 12, 2022 at 11:55 pm

Hans,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Lata Mangeshkar had some playack songs in the film ‘Narsimha Avtaar’ (1949) composed by Vasant Desai.

17 AK July 13, 2022 at 12:06 am

Hans,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation. It is not clear whether Shantaram had some reservations about certain singers or music per se. But music was top class in several films. Credit to Vasant Desai. Santaram’s wife too managed to sing some very good songs

18 Hans July 13, 2022 at 11:41 am

AK @ 16 & 17,
I talked about Shantaram not using Lata in his films. In fact Vasant Desai started using her in 1946 itself and had 14 solos upto 1949 which was second only to Zohrabai. He did not use Rafi until Sehra for which Ramlal has clearly stated in his interview that the song ‘taqdeer ka fasana’ was recorded in Mahendra Kapoor’s voice and when the effect needed was not achieved, Shantaram reluctantly allowed Ramlal to use Rafi. I think if these stats are not proof of Shantaram’s reservations about some singers, then I am frankly at a loss to provide any other proofs.

Regarding quality of Jayshree’s singing, I agree she has sung some good songs. But, you may be remembering our discussion about Nalini Jaywant’s singing. When I said she has not only sung good songs, but her voice also matches Lata’s voice, you said Lata is Lata. And now you are giving the same argument which I gave then. Jayshree sang her own songs in Dahej, but just two years later in Parchhain, when CR was the MD, she was replaced by Lata. So Desai can be said to be soft in his dealings as MD.

19 Hans July 13, 2022 at 12:06 pm

AK,
I post here a small clip of Ramlal’s interview about how Rafi was associated with ‘taqdeer ka fasana’. Here he talks about the amount he gave to Rafi for this song. He tells that when Rafi’s rate was 8 to 10 thousand he gave Rafi 1000. This fact also shows Shantaram’s reluctance to spend money on artists to keep his films low-budget and keep the profits to himself. In fact a look at the cast of his films will confirm this. In a lighter vein – though there may be truth also in it – it may be said that he married with artists to save expenses for the heroine, because he used Jayshree and Sandhya a lot.

20 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty July 14, 2022 at 5:17 pm

AK ji,

The long wait was worthwhile.

Mahendra Kapoor joins Lata and chorus at the end in the lively BEHNE song :
Jhuk jhuk jhuk jola khaye re..

He has a triad with Lata and Asha in
PYAR KI PYAS:
Pyas bhujane sab ki man ki.

I think he has a triad with Lata and Manna Dey, too. Not sure, though!

BAWARCHI has Kishore, Manna Dey and Harindranath Chattopadhyay all in Bhor aayee gaya andhiyara. Surprisingly, Manna Da on Kaka and KK on Asrani!

21 AK July 14, 2022 at 6:37 pm

Dr Shetty,
Thanks a lot. Jhuk jhuk jhuk jhola khaye re is a wonderful song. Nice observation about Manna Dey for Rajesh Khanna and Kishore Kumar for Asrani. That must be because the bawarchi had a solid training in classical music.

22 Mahesh July 14, 2022 at 7:24 pm

Yes, Mukesh has no song under Vasant Desai.

To confirm, I wrote to Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji of Surat and compiler of MGK.

In spite of his health issues, he was kind enough to respond that the score of the combo is indeed nil.

23 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty July 14, 2022 at 8:37 pm

Pt Jasraj was V Shantaram ‘s SIL when he sang for LADKI SAHYADRI KI.

LSK has a lavni style song..

Asha, Mahendra Kapoor and Amar Sheik.

Manmohan Krishna:

DR KOTNIS KI AMAR KAHANI.

24 AK July 14, 2022 at 11:04 pm

Mahesh,
Thanks a lot for confirming.

25 AK July 14, 2022 at 11:10 pm

Dr Shetty,
‘SIL’ gives another dimension. Matwala Shayar Ram Joshi and khan Mastana’s Zindagi zindagi zindagi/ Koi sapna nahin zindagi from Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani belong to the vintage era.

26 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty July 15, 2022 at 9:07 am

SHAQUE.

There is a Rafi, Asha duet, which, I think isn’t used in the movie. But, Rafi features in the credits.

Ek dil hai, Ek jaan…

More interestingly, there is a brief song in the movie, at 1.01 hrs…

Abhi na parda girao, thehro
Ke dastan aagey aur bhi hai …
A K Bannerjee.

The lyrics, by Gulzar, are from a 1967 Hemant Kumar, Gulzar collaboration ( NFS ). There is a second beautiul
nazm…

Gira do parda ke dastan khali ho gayi hai..

The 2 are available on the YouTube.

But, as usual, some overenthusiastic fellow uploaded this as HK singing for SHAQUE under Vasant Desai!

Can we call it a VD version with, I am sure, HK’s permission.

27 N Venkataraman July 15, 2022 at 4:57 pm

AKji,
First – sorry for the delayed response to the post. A nice sequel to the earlier post, and I liked your idea of classification of his male singers.
And we will have at least one more post, probably more.

Besides his own voice, Vasant Desai used 14 male vintage singers between 1942 and 1950.
1. Shahoo Modak
2. Yaqoob
3. Pahadi Sanyal
4. Parashuram
5. Khan Mastana
6. Kumar
7. Manmohan Krishna
8. Raja Gul
9. Gulraaj
10. Narayan
11. Krishna Goyal
12. Surendra
13. Balakram
14. Shailesh Mukherjee
15. Premnath

Of the above 15, you have posted songs of Sahoo Modak, Manmohan Krishna and Shailesh Mukherjee in your previous post on Vasant Desai, and that of Krishna Goyal in this post. Links for the songs of Pahadi Sanyal, Narayan and Yaqoob are not available.

Posting two more songs of vintage male singers
Ek Roopvati Sati Ban Me Khadi, Surendra, Hindustan Hamara (1950), lyrics Dewan Sharar

Zindagi Zindagi Koi Sapna Nahi zindagi, Khan Mastana, Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), lyrics Dewan Sharar

I found an interesting duet by Balakram and Nalini Jaywant from the film Hindustan Hamara (1950). Is it the same child singer of the film Nai Kahani (1943), or could be a different person

Dr Shetty,
There is something strange about AK Banerjee. A more besura person is difficult to find. Why was he taken?

29 AK July 15, 2022 at 10:21 pm

Venkataramanji,
Thanks a lot for your detailed comments though late. You have given an exhaustive list of vintage singers. Balakram should be the same person who gave vocal support to GM Durrani in the song Neend hamari khwab tumhare.

AKji,
Thanks for creating a separate section for male classical singers. The selections were listener’s pleasure and the nuggets of information provided with the links were impressive. A special thanks for the link to Ustad Salamat Ali Khan and Lata Mangeshkar’s duet. I was aware of the song but not the existence of its link.

Probably this unreleased film, Amar Samadhi was planned in late 50s. I believe, Acharya Prahlad Keshav Atre launched its production after the success of “Goonj Uthi Shehnai”. Vasant Desai had roped in maestros like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan, Salamat Ali Khan and even Dagar Bandhu besides the mainstream playback singers. However the film could not be completed. It seems three songs were recorded.
1. Poonam ki chanderi raaton men by Lata Mangeshkar
2. Aaj ke prabhat ke pehli kiran, a duet by Md.Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar
3. And the Raagmala that you have posted.

What about the links to the other two songs? Are they available?

I think there was no Hindi version of Amar Bhopali. However there was Bengali version of the film released in 1952 which could be a dubbed version. In the Bengali Version Manna Dey rendered all the male songs replacing Nagarkar. Lata Mangeshkar was retained. Technically, it was the only Bengali film Vasant Desai composed music for. And it was for the first time Manna Dey was recording a Bengali song. Although he had sung roughly 80 Hindi film songs and a single Gujarati song (Bhakta Surdas-1947) prior to 1952, he was yet to record any song in Bengali, film or Non-film. However in 1942, the year he left for Bombay with his uncle K C Dey, he composed one NFS in Bengali, sung by Supreeti Ghosh. His first film with Vasant Desai was Narasimha Avatar (1949), in which he rendered a duet with Lata Mangeshkar. This could be the first duet song Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar together.

AKji,
When I was about to post my comment (#30), I saw a whats app message from our dear Pradeepji about Manna Dey’s Bengali version of Ganashyama Sundara.

Thanks Pradeepji.

AKji,
If I am not mistaken, Ustad Amir Khan sang in two Hindi films of Vasant Desai.’ Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje’ (1955) and ‘Goonj Uthi Shehani’ (1959). You have posted both the gems.

In 1955, Vasant Desai used Ustad Amir Khan for a Marathi film ‘Ye Re Majhya Magalya’, produced by Srilakshmi Chitra and directed by Bhalji Pendharkar

A traditional Dhrut Khyal in Raag Lalit from the Marathi film

The same Bandish sung by Ustad Amir Khan Saheb was used by O P Nayyar for the film Ragini (1958), as the title song. The tempo is bit faster.

“Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje” (1955) was the most celebrated film for both Vasant Desai and V Shantaram. Besides Ustad Amir Khan, Vasant Desai assembled star instrumental virtuoso like tabla maestro Pandit Samta Prasad from Banaras, Khol expert Sudarshan of Calcutta, Sitarist Ustad Halim Zafar Khan, Phakawaj player Ramdas to be a part of a classical ensemble. Santoor was introduced in films with Shiv Kumar Sharma from Kashmir. And dance maestros Gopi Krishna and Choubey ji Maharaj were there to add lustre at the studio.

In ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ (1959) too Vasant Desai employed Sitarist Ustad Halim Zafar Khan.

It appears that the sitar player accompanying Rajendra Kumar in the video clipping must be a trained Sitar player.

N Venkataraman ji,

A small confusion, perhaps? You have correctly posted the Bengali version .However, I am sure you meant the Kannada version when you mentioned my name.

Manna Dey with Lakshmi Shankar.
It is a NFS because AMAR BHOPALI wasn’t made in Kannada.

I was aware of LS being a South Indian. Am sure she is a Tamilian. The WhatsApp message accompanying the song mentioned her as a Kannadiga. NV ji, please clarify.

Everyone is aware of her being the wife of the younger brother of Ravi and Uday Shankar. But, not many know that her daughter Viji was the first wife of Maestro L Subramanyam.

Interesting also is the fact that she later sang for Vasant Desai in a Hindi film with a Golden Era veteran who made a comeback after decades.

34 N Venkataraman July 16, 2022 at 11:01 pm

Pradeepji,
Not a small confusion. A huge foul-up!
I would not try to cover up my bamboozlement!!!
My apologies

In fact when saw your whatsapp post, I was listening to the Bengali version. I listened to the first line of your post in a hurry and concluded that it is the Marathi version. After seeing your comment @33 I realized my blunder. My regrets once again.

I never knew that there was a Kannada version sung of this song by Manna Dey and Laxmi Shankar. I liked the Kannada version more than the Bengali one. Thanks for sharing the song. By the way who was the lyricist. The Bengali version was penned by Gouriprasanna Majumdar.

With your permission posting the Kannada version of Ganashyama Sundara
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hkph0HDCw6E

I knew about Laxmi Shankar’s Tamil origin and her other details mentioned by you.

Thanks and regrets once again

PS: Most probably the other song of Laxmi Shankar which you have mentioned must be the multilingual song.
Akji,
Since there is a male voice, can we post the song here. Or should I wait for the next part.

35 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty July 16, 2022 at 11:15 pm

NV ji,

It happens to all of us! No big deal and no apologies needed. I was sure you would correct it in a ziffy.

Yes, because of the next post, I didn’t mention the song though almost all of us will know which song I am referring to! I was chuckling in my mind thinking of Voldermart, he who must not be named!!

36 AK July 17, 2022 at 7:38 am

Venkataramanji @30, 31,
Vasant Desai’s diverse mix of male singers meant that the classification presented itself. I don’t think any other music director can boast of using so many classical singers in films. Naushad used three – Ustad Amir Khan, DV Paluskar and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

I looked for the other two songs of Amar Samadhi in YT. I don’t think these have been posted yet. We should thank the uploader that among the three he chose the Raagmala to post.

Lapat ke pat pahle vikraal is a nice song but I could not clearly make out its mukhada. You are right, this could be the first duet of Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar, because that was the time when she started singing her duets with various singers for the first time.

Thanks for adding the Bengali version of Ghanshyam sundara.

@33,
Thanks a lot Dr Shetty for mentioning the Kannada version of Ghanshyam sundara.

37 AK July 17, 2022 at 10:53 am

Venkataramanji @32,
Raag Lalit in the Marathi film is excellent. The connection with OP Nayyar’s piece in the film Ragini is interesting.

You have added many classical maestros who worked for Vasant Desai. Ustad Bismillah Khan and Ustad Halim Ali Zafar Khan’s jugalbandi is stand alone, but the sitarist was primarily used as an accompanist in films, though in classical concerts he played solo. Same with Shivkumar Sharma.

Incidentally, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan has also sung in Satyajit Ray’s film Jalsaghar. And the Raag is Miyan Ki Malhar, which has close connection with Vasant Desai (film Guddi’s path-breaking songs by Vani Jairam).

@34,
Thanks for posting the Kannada version of Ghanshyam sundara. If s song is an MF duet, it would belong here. Please post it.

38 N Venkataraman July 19, 2022 at 8:54 pm

AKji,
You have posted a song each of the leading mainstream male singers of Vasant Desai, except Mahendra Kapoor. After Md.Rafi and Manna Dey, Manmohan Krishna and Mahendra Kapoor have sung the maximum number of songs for Vasant Desai. Anupji, Hansji & Pradeepji have offset that gap by posting Mahendra Kapoor’s songs. Parashuram and Ramakant have lent their voices in a quartet song in Jhansi Ki Rani (1953). Hansji has posted a song of Kavi Pradeep. The song by Mahendra Kapoor posted by Pradeepji is a triad and has the voice of one Amar Sheikh.

That leaves us with only one mainstream singer of the yesteryears, G M Durrani. He sang four duets in two films, 1 in Jeevan Tara (1951) and 3 in Anand Mahal (1953). Posting two duets of G M Durrani

Pradeepji @26,
The duet, Ek dil hai, Ek jaan by Rafi and Asha comes towards the end of the film Shaque (1976), a short duration (over 1 minute) song played on a record player. And another song, a female solo follows.

Pradeepji & AKji,
Posting the audio version of the duet, lyrics Gulzar

Can J K Banerjee be considered as an unusual singer? But the song goes well with the situation. J K Banerjee makes a brief appearance as Kaka Banerjee, who is in an illusion about his crooning abilities, bores his wife (Durga Khote) and niece (Shabana Azmi).

40 AK July 19, 2022 at 9:43 pm

Venkataramanji @38,
I had mentioned GM Durrani in the write-up, but didn’t use his songs as I counted him among vintage singers.

@39,
JK Banerjee has to be counted among unusual singers because he was unusually hoarse.

41 Ashwin Bhandarkar July 19, 2022 at 11:44 pm

AK: Thanks for highlighting Vasant Desai’s usage of so many Hindustani Music stalwarts in the films for which he gave music.

I would like to bring to the notice of everybody that there is another version of the title song of JJPB – it is in Raga Basant and is sung by Lata, a male singer whose voice I am not able to place (Hemant Kumar? Gopi Krishna? Vasant Desai himself?) and chorus. The song is featured in the last 1 minute of the film (starting at 2:24:56 below) as a grand finale:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xget6PiuiXM

The song by Pt.Jasraj from ‘Ladki Sahyadri Ki’ is based on Raag Ahir Bhairav.

42 AK July 20, 2022 at 10:25 am

Ashwin,
I have seen this film more than once, but thanks for mentioning the end version of the Title Song. The male voice is minimal, but I guess it should be Hemant Kumar. If the beginning was a joyous Adana, which raag should have been used for the joyous finale?

43 Ashwin Bhandarkar July 20, 2022 at 2:55 pm

AK@42,

I have no quarrel with Vasant Desai’s choice of Basant for the finale but raags like Bihag, Maru Bihag, Kedar, Hameer, Chhaya Nat, and Bahar could also have served the purpose equally well.

44 Dr Pradeep Kumar Shetty July 23, 2022 at 4:57 pm

N Venkataraman ji,

Saw your response just now. If not clarified by you I would have continued to believe the Rafi Asha duet to not have been used in the movie.

Karthik,
Long time. So welcome again to SOY. It is indeed superb. Now I am convinced Vasant Desai’s contribution in Marathi films/Natyasangeet is as valuable as that in Hindi films.

47 Shelomit November 8, 2022 at 12:15 pm

My chum Saakshi introduced me to Desai’s songs for the ’70s mythological “Jai Radhakrishna” by way of the very lovely “Ek Toh Main Ek Murli Birhan.” If HGM is to be believed, Mukesh (and a chorus) may have sung “Is Bharat Par Hai Garv Hamein” from the same film, which plays under the opening titles. I am not very skilled at distinguishing between voices, so I shall leave that judgment to those better equipped. The song can be heard on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kIW0T2pEaY

48 AK November 8, 2022 at 5:13 pm

Shelomit,
I can say for sure that Mukesh is not there in the song. The male voice is very close to Manna dey.

49 Mahesh November 10, 2022 at 11:55 am

AK ji,

Yes, Its not Mukesh.

As I said earlier, all available info indicates that Mukesh never sang for Vasant Desai. (Or, VD never got anything sung by Mukesh) 🙂

In the present instance, the credit titles in the referred song clearly show Manna Dey as the only male playback singer in the film.

I can understand why you have said very close to Manna da as I too felt something amiss in the famed voice.
